Ethically Traded is standard SBUX made up to sound like they're more socially aware. So ethically traded may mean whatever they can get their coffee for, whether its below market or not.

Completely agree. If I'm running late and can't make coffee, I get my regular cup 'o Joe at McDonald's (sooo good), but if I want a vanilla nonfat latte, Starbucks is my place. Delicious...

@pecan 3.14159265: @chiieddy: Well, kind of. \"Macchiato\" means \"marked\" in Italian. So what you get at Starbucks is more accurately a latte macchiato, or milk \"marked\" with espresso. But if you just say \"macchiato\" in Italy and don't specify, they will almost always assume you mean a caffe macchiato, or espresso with a little bit of milk.
Starbucks does and always has gotten my worstie vote simply for this McDonaldization of Italian coffee culture.

I was so happy not to be included in raised rates and lowered limits when just yesterday I got a notice from BOA they want to raise my APR from 10% to 21%! Argh!
@me and the sysop: My mom got her notice yesterday. She just bought a car so she knows her credit score is a 780, pretty damn good in this economy. She's never paid late on her BOA card and kept the paperwork from the balance transfer offer they gave her two years ago (4.99% for life as long as she makes payments on time.) They sent the letter to her raising her to 13.99 percent. She paid off the money she owed for the month and told them to shove it.

I just got my rape letter from BofA yesterday and got a 10.75% increase.
I went from fixed 9.99% to 20.74% variable starting May. All this despite holding a zero balance on the card, not a single late payment in 3 years, and this week being my 9 year anniversary with them.

I've banked with a credit union my entire banking life, and never regretted it. My current APR has actually been lowered over the past couple months from 12% to 8.24% currently. Love it!

I got my letter on Saturday. 8.99% fixed to 15% variable.
Been a fixed rate for over 5 years. The letter basically said \"We're changing it just because we can.\"
I promptly rejected it.
I was smart enough to close my BofA account LONNNG ago, so I'm voting for Starbucks. Their coffee is undrinkable and their baked goods are too inexplicably horrible for you. 500+ calories and 20+ grams of fat in THAT? SERIOUSLY? HOW?!

Baked sweets are wonderful. As a sometime food. Not as an every-day-for-a-year food. Let my 15% increase in body mass (all of it fat) serve as a lesson here.
With 500 fewer calories coming in per day, I now stand a chance at some weight loss.
I'll still have the occasional green tea frappacino though. Hold the melon syrup and whipped cream please.

I just recently closed my BofA account. Aside from the whole financial crisis thing, of which they had a hand in, they also screwed up my account royally and couldn't figure out how to fix it. Apparently in their system's computer my full name was correct, however, everytime I would request a new debit card (with my real name on it) they could only manage to send me a card with my first and middle name (as my last name) on it.
It was a huge pain in the ass and more than once my card was declined via credit because the name didn't match my license.

I kind of feel like a handful of people genuinely got a burnt batch and everyone else just started applying it across board when they exhausted a decent argument.
I mean, they triple filter their water for goodness sake. You'd think they'd pick up on a \"burnt\" taste?
I don't know about the burnt taste, but every time I've had their regular coffee, it just wasn't very good. I heard they came out with a better, milder blend last year, but I've never tried it.

@TinkishDelight: The burnt taste is from over-roasting or a poorer quality bean. That's how they actually got their start. They bought the beans the other coffee shops rejected and were able to undercut the mom and pop shops by doing so. There's a small group of the population you like that and so that became their place.

@TinkishDelight: You'd know the \"burnt\" taste if you've ever had real, good coffee. Not to sound like a coffee snob, but my sister brought some real Colombian coffee back from Colombia, and the difference is astounding. How anyone manages to drink their regular java is beyond me. Filtering the water three times is nice, but doesn't really do anything to help if the coffee beans themselves have been roasted to hell and back.
Then again, you'd never pick up on the burnt taste if all you drink is their espresso based drinks - lattes and cappuccinos. But you would if you drank straight up drip coffee. Nasty!

Good day for this part of the poll. I got my \"let us double your APR or close your card\" letter from BOFA today.
I know BOA is the fun one to poke fun at, But In my two years with them, I've had nothing but wonderful service. I told this to my branch manager (Who knows me by first name, and Knows about me) and he said, that because of the patch network of BOA (the many many mergers) that many branches differ from each other and local branches have more powerful then branches of other banks.
Starbucks is the epitome of what's wrong with this economy.
I'm quite familiar with the term. Starbucks is symbolic of this problem because of the spending beyond our limits and general lack of thrift with in the nation. I know that Starbucks is not indicative of the CDS, but it's a symbol of overpriced unneeded consumption. @MyPetFly:

I don't know why Starbucks is in the contest. Starbucks actually provides benefits to its employees, such as health insurance. For that alone, they should be on a Best-of-America list.
And, there's nothing wrong with making coffee that huge masses of people must consume daily at $4 a shot. That's nice work if you can get it.

Bank of America, hands down. They didn't send me a tax form (1099-INT) for some savings bonds I cashed, so when I called them up to ask what happened their oh so helpful CSR gave me a phone number to call. It turned out the phone number was to the treasury department and it was the hotline to find out current bond interest rates and connect to someone so you could purchase them.
I ended up enlisting their Twitter person to help me out, when all was finally said and done, it turned out that they had messed up and not entered my savings bonds as bonds, so there was no report made to the IRS. I had cashed those bonds 6 months before the end of the year, so I was shocked that it was never noticed until I started bitching that I should have gotten a form.

@AceKicker: Same here. SBUX is sort of like the middle upper class Wal-Mart, where they've essentially shaped our attitudes and expectations on the cost of things. They treat their employees well, but are evil to competitors. For example, they once bought an entire building in Chicago (Belmont and Clark-FYI), cancelled the lease of the coffee shop that was there, and then leased/resold the rest of the building and put their shop in.
How anyone could choose StarBucks over Bank of America, I in this lifetime will never understand. This is not even an easy question, this is a dead give away!

Expensive products aren't anti-consumer. Plus, if you told the Starbucks that you didn't like the way the coffee taste I almost guarantee they'd give you a refund or let you exchange it. They have some of the best customer service for any large food service chain. Maybe it's because their workers make more than minimum wage so they can afford to take baths at home not in the kichen sink (Burger King I'm looking at you).
I hate Starbucks. I hate the coffee. I hate that all their sizes \"mean\" large. I hate the decor. I hate the logo. I hate paying $3 for a bad cup of coffee. BofA is HORRID! I have my mortgage with them and was trying to refinance. My branch could not help me so I went to their web site and put in a request for someone to contact me, I even explained why, etc.
For TWO WEEKS, I would get automated phone calls from them every two days saying \"We're sorry, our call volume is higher than expected and we can't talk to you right now.\"!!!!!!!!!!
Then, I returned to their web site and saw a comment about their \"WORLD CLASS CUSTOMER SERVICE\" Where???
Remember when Starbucks gave away a free cup of copy to anyone who voted on election day? I live in California where is is illegal for any non-government entity to offer an incentive to vote. So Starbucks gave away a free cup to EVERYONE.
And then there was that free cup for pledging to volunteer 5 hours to a worthy cause.
Not to mention that they treat their employees, and more importantly, consumers, very very well.

Yes. Starbucks serves less than ideal coffee, cleverly hidden under layer after creamy, fatty layer of sugar, syrup, and cinnamon-choco-brownie-blast-whip-foam-topping.. but the problems with them go beyond just playing \"beverage dress-up.\" People happily pay for it and enjoy it: that's just business. that's a tough one, I'm against both but BoA takes the cake here, I can get my coffee from another store, however the banking system is setup so that many people can't leave it while you can easily choose not to spend money at starbucks.
I don't do Starbucks so I may not be the best person to vote in this although I have purchased their products in the past. BofA, however is a corporation that I would like to think I'll never deal with again. In my view they are a terrorist organization of the likes of AT&T. True, they're pretty good about refunds. I've gotten free drinks because the barrista thought maybe I'd waited too long to get it, and I've made nice complaints through their website about a few sub-par drinks and received gift cards. Granted, they may be the Wal-Mart of food service, but they're good to their customers and employees.

I don't understand why Starbucks is here. They're not a utility or necessity like a Bank. If you don't like the coffee or think it's too expensive just don't go; there are lots of alternatives.
Starbucks has a big menu board that says exactly what you will pay.
BOA randomly charges you just to charge you a fee.
Starbucks prices may be high, but they are a luxury.
BOA will charge you to cash a check drawn on a BOA account if the person it is written to doesn't have an account at BOA too.
Starbucks products will give you a buzz.

Besides being on the expensive side, I don't see what people dislike about them. For a \"fast food\" like place, they treat their employees quite well, providing health coverage and 401ks even for part time workers. They also have been quite nimble to reply to customer complaints, especially for a company their size.

The main problem I have with Starbucks is that it is one of the high profile culprits in the homogenization of America.
Ever since I read Kerouac in high School, I have loved the notion of the great American road trip.
But what is the point of going on a road trip now?
Every town you go to looks the same.
OOOH, I drove 2,000 miles, and I went to a Starbucks that had three more tables than the one where I live!
Our country is becoming a cultural vacuum. A void filled with big box retailers and chain restaurants. Anywhere you go, all you see is A Wal-Mart or target, A Home depot, Mc Donald's, BK, KFC etc. TGIF's, Olive Garden for when you don't want fast food. Barnes and Noble replacing the small bookstore where the owner would recommend a new book they thought would be right up your alley. The local record store that would hook you up with promo cds when you bought a few discs is boarded up, but you can get your top 40 cds over at Wal-Mart. And where the eclectic mom & pop coffee shop once was, there stands a Starbucks, selling you horrible tasting burnt coffee for five bucks a hit. And people wait on line for it. Waiting in line to order a \"tall mochafrappalattecinocafechaihalfcaf\" while the speakers play the latest Norah Jones tune which can be purchased at the register to go with your shitty drink.
And that is why I hate Starbucks.

This contest has been brewing for a long time. Though I hate BofA a latte, I've been brewing some angst toward starbucks for a while too.
Well, both Starbucks and B of A have 100% Corporate Equality Index ratings. So neither of them are the most OVERTLY evil thing in the corporate universe. So as has been mentioned about a gazillion times above, it comes down to a coffee company fulfilling a hole in the market for fancy coffee and a gigantic bank that will take bailout money and then still raise your APR.
This is no contest. Sure the coffee is expensive and the snacks are fatty. But Starbucks won't raise the price of the coffee they've already poured for you after you've already paid and taken a few sips.

I'm totally confused as to why Starbucks is on this list. There was an empty space and someone threw a dart at a poster? I don't get it. You could place McDonald's or any other fast-food joint there, too. The list would get enormous. SB hasn't done nearly enough bad to make it on a list like this. Their (general) committment to employees, community and quality of product PLUS the drive to remain profitable should equal a spot in the \"Best Company in America\" contest.
If you don't like it's products, don't shop there. It's not a reason to proclaim it a \"bad\" company.

I Don't even see how Starbucks could be on this list... How could anybody consider Starbucks one of the \"worst 32\" companies... they have very high customer satisfaction, very high employee satisfaction, and provide a product that their customers really like and are content with the price. Further, they give back to the community -- usually more so than the \"local\" places that they supposedly encroach upon -- and do far more good than most other companies.
As somebody who gets a coffee at Starbucks every day and has a good experience 99+% of the time (my bad experiences are usually no worse than anywhere else, and Starbucks is the only place that regularly gives me a free coffee whenever I have a subpar experience), I don't see how they could be on the list.
There's a Starbucks right across the street from where I work, and I love it. Sometimes twice a month, sometimes twice a week, always delicious. The service has never been anything less than stellar. I have to give them props, because I used to frequent smaller coffee shops in college (and honestly still would if I were nearby because the drinks ARE better), but the service was always spotty at best.

Starbucks is a fantastic company. They give health insurance to employees who work more than 20 hours a week, and were among the first to give gay partner benefits. They seem to have a culture of niceness there, and I've seen employees at the locations I go to (three, regularly) treat the homelss and other societal outsiders with tremendous respect and compassion.
A friend who's a homeless artist used to work out of a Starbucks I went to (do his art, that is) and when a guy in France wanted to buy his work, but the artist had no way to take money (no bank account, etc.) a Starbucks barista took the money via his Paypal and gave the homeless artist the cash. Every cent.
You don't like the coffee, don't patronize the place. The employees at the locations I go to are part of the reason I go there.
Bank of America, on the other hand, brags about \"multiple levels of security,\" but their tellers gave my money out -- $12,000, total -- on seven separate occasions, to women with ONLY a fake driver's license in my name. NO signature check, no bankcard required, no PIN required. SEVEN times. And then they fired me as a customer for complaining that they'd failed their fiduciary duty to me...after I'd been with them almost 20 years...and the only complaint they had about me was that I was a bit peeved that they demanded no ID of the thieves, and seem to put many in danger of identity theft through their practices (which I asked that they change -- so as not to endanger other customers as I was endangered).

I've also experienced burnt coffee at Starbucks. They brewed a fresh pot for me and it tasted like the stuff from the monster coffee brewer in the military chow hall six hours after it was brewed. What on earth do they do to it to make it taste so awful?
Starbucks gets my vote because they buy out the leases of local coffee houses at exorbitant prices then abandon the site once the lease runs out.
I've never had a bad experience with B of A because I never use banks--only credit unions. I can't think of any reason they are any worse than the other big bank receiving taxpayer money. For example, all of the big banks charge me ridiculous amounts to use their ATMs on top of the charge to my credit union. I never get charged at a foreign bank ATM.

Starbucks sucks as a coffee provider, and I would prefer that they use ALL fair-trade coffees, but they are pretty good to their employees from what I've seen. BofA sucks.

Why would Starbucks qualify as a runner up for Worst Company? I've never had any customer service issues with them, and I've never really read any on consumerist. You would only buy their coffee or other products if you like them, and if you don't you wouldn't patronize the place. So, I'm kind of lost as to why it would even be a runner up for worst company.

I love Starbucks because they raised the mainstreeam American bar for what coffee can taste like - it very difficult for any cafe to serve the complete tasteless Bunn-O-matic swill you used to get everywhere. I hate Starbucks because they engage in Monster Cable style trademark suits, the most obnoxious of which is against Haidabucks, a cafe in the Haida Gwaii community in British Columbia.
