-->It's probably never a good idea to offer Yankees fans free tickets for showing up and forming a crowd, because then you've got a crowd of Yankees fans with nothing to do, and that's not going to end well.
If you can manage to get through the terrible user-interaction-required ad at the start of the embedded video, you can watch footage of petulant Yankees fans pouring Pepsi on the sidewalk while chanting, "Pepsi sucks! Pepsi sucks!" One woman gets really indignant for the camera, asking, "How do you do this big show, use us in the media circus as ponies, and then not give us what you promised us?" We think maybe she's using Pepsi as a pony in her own circus (watch the clip and you'll see), but she still has a point.

Pepsi is trying a different route now and giving away tickets over the air through a partnership with a local radio station.

I do find it ironic that the two biggest spending teams are.. wait for it!.. both in New York. The city of shortcuts.

This kind of reminds me of free movie screenings. It was a shock to me the first time I showed up at a movie with a friend with passes to one of these screenings and found out that they give away way more of these passes than they have seats (which I can understand for obscure movies, but not for popular ones). Not only didn't we get in, but my friend and I had already bought our refreshments, and had stood in line for an hour and a half. The company rep explained that not everyone that picks up a pass shows up, but had no answer for why they couldn't have counted the people in line and informed those of us too far back in the line to get in that we might as well go home.

@Crabby Cakes: I recall reading that the tickets were for June 1. I don't recall reading that opening day tickets were promised (although if they were, then yeah, people are gonna be a little upset). But I am thinking one of threee things happened:

1. People assumed it was for opening day and they weren't.

2. They were promised opening day tickets but didn't tell fans that only x number of tickets would be available, thereby generating a large number of fans who wanted to get in.

3. They promised opening day tickets and did say that x number of tickets would be availble and people showed up hoping they'd be one of those "x number." Of course, in this scenario, way more than x showed up.

There might be some other reason too, but my brain hurts from trying to think of them.

In this case, the research would be pretty easy since you'd only need to ask anyone who has heard of the Yankees about what the size of the crowd might be.
