We just say something similar with the $184 jeans. Most clothing/accessories companies will claim that the product is used no matter what happened to the product.

They just do not want to return it. Simple as that.

@anduin: What do you mean? I can put together a very well made suit for $200. I don't think you have a full understanding of how much womens clothing costs...it's not all extremely expensive. There are some companies that make very good quality suits and sell them for less than $200.

I had a revelation once when moving into a cheap apartment in a cheap area of my city while looking at the \"tricked out\" cars in the lot. I scoffed that they would bother doing that with their cars when they're living space/neighborhood were in such a poor area, and I did this while carrying in my two LCD displays for my \"tricked out\" computer.

Even though I realize I'm totally wrong when I do it, it's still a difficult task to keep yourself from discounting what someone else feels is actually valuable in life.

We've all done that, and it's kind of like getting smacked in the face with a trout when you realize the thing you've ragging on other people for is the same thing you're doing yourself.

I put a lot of value into our computers, the quality of our food and home, and our clothing because my husband and I both have to maintain business-appropriate attire for work, and we take pride in looking put together and will spend more money for it. I do buy a lot of things from Target, but the things I buy aren't poorly made because I invest a lot of time into knowing what materials will hold up in the wash, how much it'll take to dry clean a shirt, and whether that's worth it, and I see a lot of people doing that with their cars. I don't think anyone should tell me that a $10 pair of shoes from Payless can do the job just as well as a $70 pair of shoes from Nordstroms because chances are, they put the same kind of value into something they do. It's a striking realization when you actually come to grips with it.

I would buy it, if it were a very well-made and classic bag that would last me a lifetime. Then I would consider it worth the money, although I probably wouldn't spend more than what the OP spent. Any more than that is just too much for me. If it were a piece of crap that I wanted just to be trendy, then no.

The company is in the wrong here, if they sent her the wrong purse. They're just trying not to admit that they made a mistake and are grasping at straws. Or hairs, as the case may be.

How much she paid for this bag is irrelevant. Maybe she's been squirreling her pennies away for years so that she could buy this luxury item, or maybe she's wealthy. WTH does it matter?

What DOES matter is that LV apparently doesn't care one whit about customer service. Or maybe the company is so hard up for sales in this down economy that they'll do anything not to have to refund a customer's money. Or maybe she didn't know that what \"LV\" really stands for is \"lost value\".

I'm no shill for LV, though I have a few LV bags. I didn't buy any of them. They were handed down in the family. I expected much better of LV, because I don't recall my parents ever having a poor experience with them. I know my mom likes to be comfortable when she shops, whether it's grocery shopping or going to the LV store, so she's usually wearing exercise stuff (track pants, sneakers) and not once has she ever been treated poorly because of it. And to top that off, she's an immigrant! Oh noes! The immigrants are taking all of our luxury goods!

I jest. But you get it when I mean to say that companies that make their wares in true luxury goods should try to treat their customers well and treat them fairly, and how they're dressed, what they make, or what they look like should never factor. They should simply provide extremely good customer service because they should value the people who buy from them. I hope Kristie gets her money back or gets the bag she actually wanted.

@LadySiren: I'm a fan of the leather Coach stuff, that doesn't have the logo everywhere. I find those items to be very well made, more along the lines of when Coach was founded. I have the classic LV bags, before they went nuts with the neon colors. My mother was very much into the quality of it, and avoided the trendy items. The classic lines tend to be better made, and are better suited for wear and tear. My mom uses a LV computer bag and hauls pounds of papers in it. It still looks brand new, and it's retained its shape.

assuming she has the purse still in her closet and the receipt or order that she placed stating the style of the purse, this should be pretty open/shut in that they sent her the wrong purse. If they did send her the wrong case, I don't know how any claims of it being used will stand up...

LVMH must be feeling the pinch casue they never used to be this tacky. I used to work at one of their stores and repair bags and that bag, at least from the photos, looks absolutely new. Used=scuffs on the canvas, wear in the leather, and a tarnished lock. There's a good bit of glare but that lock looks pretty decent. If you're down for buying their product I would buy direct from the store and draw out the sale to build a quick relationship with the salesman. LV keeps all their customer info on file and they will remember you and be more helpful should the company be at fault. And you'll avoid getting the wrong item.

@ilves: I second that this should be an open and shut case which will probably be resolved through the chargeback but could just as easily be handled in small claim's court, if not. Louis Vutton's claim that the purse was used does not act as a defense to her claim of an incorrect shipment. Oddly, LV's picture may work against them, since it will show at minimum that they shipped and received back a different purse than was ordered. Why would they really want the bad publicity over this though? The customer is NOT asking for a refund - she's asking for the shipment to be corrected.

Well, these have to be handled by someone from material to customer's hands. How do they prove that it wasn't from someone who handled it along the way? Is there a hair inspection station? Do they have documented proof that there was no hair before they shipped it? I don't understand how these luxury companies stay in business treating their customers like thieves.

@cabjf: unfortunately a lot of bad customers force them to act like this. i bet a lot of their returns are due to someone buying it just to use once, and then returning it. while this lady is probably being truthful, for everyone who is they probably have to deal with 5 or 6 that did use the product and just don't want to pay for it.

@Gene Gemperline: I doubt that would happen at Nordstrom today. Even though they love to tell the tire story in training classes.

I used to work there and the official policy is that 'there is no policy', but procedure for something like this (especially for something like this!) is if the customer does not have proof of purchase, like the receipt and the UII which is a barcode that they affix to every piece of merchandise sold which links to your transaction, method of payment, etc. then you just say that you are going to do more \"research\" on the transaction.

You then call the manager in charge and they do some background phone calls to security, credit, and whatever else, they also take down your id and address on an 'inquiry' form that they check as well. They make sure that with big ticket items like handbags or designer clothing that there is a record of the transaction.

So, long story short, I seriously doubt that those stellar stories of Nordstrom's customer service would hold up today, knowing what I know. In fact, a poor woman who took back some clothing that had designer labels sewn in when they were really far from designer got 'retrained' at the store I worked at. And by retrained I mean fired. If someone does take it back more than likely its their last day on the job.

P.S. Check the entry for Nordstrom on snopes and the tire story comes up....and its less than truthful. It's good PR more than anything.

Yes, touching the purse = being used.. at least in the case of a $700 bag, where going from Mint/NM condition to VF alone will likely end up with like a $600 depreciation. I'd be surprised if just the fact that it has been sold ever, even if not physically used, makes it immediately worthless. No one who wants a LV bag wants a USED one for gods sake; that would just be cheap and classless.

If you are not going to allow returns, don't have a return policy. Just be open and upfront that you are unwilling to take back any item bought through you and let the consumer decided if the risk is worth their money.
This looks like just another attempt to backpedal around their return policy by using the smallest (literally in this case unless they dna matched some bacteria to the OP) detail possible.
I hope the OP can use a copy of her original receipt and the claims from the company to receive a successful chargeback.
Same as the jeans, she wasn't originally asking for her money back. No, she just wanted the item she ordered and paid for. Why do luxury companies think this is the time to anger their customers?

The chargeback process will easily take care of this. The fact that there is a hair in the purse is irrelevant. They sent the wrong purse. Period.

End of story.

Do not pass go, do not collect 700 dollars Louis Vuitton!

Keep ANY and ALL documentation that proves that they sent the wrong purse. If you have an email that says one model number, keep that -- you'll be sending it to the credit card company to prove they sent you the wrong item.

@supercereal: The credit card company only requires the customer to attempt to resolve the issue with the merchant one time. The merchant flat out refused to accept the return and that is fully documented. The merchant is going to lose the money, the item and a charge back fee. The employee will no doubt be fired or at least have to pay for the item.

Their policy is that all returned items must be in \"perfect saleable condition,\" which leaves it up to their complete discretion on what \"perfect saleable condition\" means. They apparently don't find items with hair in them fit for sale.

I wouldn't be so hasty is assuming they'll lose the money.

I have no idea what these companies are thinking. I know that 'luxury' has become a diluted concept, and designers are spending a lot of time putting their names on t-shirts instead of producing quality, high-end products, but stuff like this really makes no sense. Luxury goods don't stand on their own anymore, and people who decide to spend their money this way are expecting at least minimal customer service. Why not be like the Ritz Carlton and really impress them? Seems like really short-sighted management.

I'm no designer girl and would thus never buy a purse that costs almost as much as my monthly mortgage payment but still, the company didn't hold its end of the bargain. Its that simple. She wanted and paid for one thing but got another.

If I ordered a replacement hood for my '92 Bonneville in dark green but the salvage yard (yes, one can order used auto parts through a nationwide network of junk yards) sent me a silver hood for a '93 Grand Am and wouldn't take it back, I'd be pretty mad too. It would have been just as important to me as that purse was to her.

@mdoublej: I'm not sure how much renting goes on with high luxury goods. I mean, it's $700 that you're got posted onto your account. And LV bags have suede and leather interiors (they smell heavenly...the purse equivalent of the new car smell), so any wear and tear from a day will be pretty noticeable. If you want to do that kind of thing, hook yourself up to a service like Bag, Borrow or Steal.

I've never bought from them before, but I spent _alot_ every few months on clothing and home supply's from [www.ralphlauren.com] I have never had a problem with there support/returns/exchanges. They even ship out and schedual saturday deliveries with no extra charge. They are deffinately up on the online shopping experience with zappos.

How does having a hair inside the bag prove it was used? All that says is maybe she opened it up and a hair fell inside. Maybe she didn't and the hair was there to begin with. It wouldn't even matter if the hair was hers or not either as a hair inside a bag is not the same as a piece of candy stuck to the side or some other obvious usage and or damage. I would guess the chargeback would be the best method to solve this one too.

The same thing happened to me when I ordered a $500 coat from Ralph Lauren's website. I ordered one size too small, asked for the next size. They said since I had taken off the tags and worn it they could not take it back. The damn thing looked brand new still, I wore it for like an hour... Give me a break.


Though if you would of bought this at a retail store like VonMaur or Nordstrom they would of exchanged it and kissed you ass for it too without questions..

Think about every luxury item you own. Video games, stereo equipment, computer equipment, jewelry, clothes...

Think about every cent you pay over what you need to get by. Think about the concerts and movies and cable and restaurant meals.

Could you give all of that money to charity and save lives? Or course you could. But that's your money. You earned it. You earned the right to spend it however you like it. That doesn't make you a bad person. It makes you human. The fact that you have less or more of it to spend does not make you a better or worse person than the one who decides to spend $700 on a purse.

But shaming a person for enjoying or spending their money on something that you wouldn't does make you sound a bit holier-than-thou.

Depends on what you call a luxury item I guess. I don't have a bigscreen. There is a diff between luxury items like a nice car, or a big screen TV, and a purse.


A nice car is a pleasure to drive - a good bigscreen with a nice set of speakers is fun to watch. These items offer the buyer functional benefits that a lower priced \"non\" luxury product does not provide. The only benefit that a $700 purse offers the buyer that a $10 Kmart purse does not offer is that it is a status symbol.


Did you buy a better than basic computer because it was more fun to use and capable of doing more than a basic computer? Did you buy that computer because it was functionally superior or becase you thought it would impress someone?


Since the function of a purse is to carry things I have a hard time believing that this $700 bag is functionally superior to a basic $10 purse. All these crappy things are is status symbols.

um, not true. you buy something that unlike a $10 kmart purse or a $100K car that gets driven once or twice a year is that, i (who own THAT very $700 in the right size) is that i have ONE purse what goes with everything and that i can wear every day for a lifetime (i am 28, so if i live to be 80 that is 52 years of wear) and it still looks and feels as good as the DAY you bought it. it would cost you maybe 3X as much money in $10 walmart purse, plus you could never wear them to any formal event. so you would have to buy others. and spend many times as much over a lifetime.

@1234tu: I think LV purses are extremely well made, and are fun to carry and to look at. The enjoyment I get out of something obviously isn't the same as the enjoyment you get out of it - but it doesn't make your opinion automatically more valid than the opinion of anyone else.

You can buy a Nissan Z for $30,000 but you choose to buy a Ferrari for $250,000. But a Nissan Z can go really fast too, why did you spend the money for a Ferrari? Because it's a better product. You betcha that a LV bag is better crafted and will last longer than a $10 bag from K-Mart, just like a Ferrari has better craftsmanship and quality than a Nissan Z.

@pecan 3.14159265: Actually, in my experience, higher-end fashion items tend to be made LESS durably that their more affordable counterparts. 90% of this purse's value of \"Ooh, look what I own.\" is done with after the first day of ownership.

After a few months, the more wealthy consumers have already moved onto another overpriced handbag, anyhow. If you make it last longer and look new instead of used up, it'll go on the secondary market. This dilutes the brand for these designers. Most designers would rather not sell a purse than to sell it to someone who might give it to a.. poor person. How terrible!

If we're talking about materials, the suede bag might not last as long because its material is more inclined to scuff, whereas canvas can be wiped with a damp towel. In one of my LV bags there is a pen mark because I used it for schoolbooks. It might decrease its value, but since it's my bag, and I'm going to keep it forever, I didn't care. It was my fault anyway, for forgetting to put the cap back on the pen. But I buy things based on the amount of value I'll be able to get out of it. A $3,000 clutch is useless if what you really need is a beach bag. Likewise, a $10 beach bag is useless if you're going to a formal affair.

I'm sure they do get bogus returns from people ordering something, using once, and then returning.

BUT... when you are charging $700 for a $50 purse, one of the things you could be reasonably expected to provide for the additional $650 is reasonable customer service and a positive experience.

How many customers will now go buy some other pretentious, overpriced handbag of a different brand, now that they've seen how Vuitton treats their valued customers? If they lose ONE sale as a result of this posting, they are in the hole for way more than the cost of taking this handbag back.

I predict that someone from corporate will suddenly and dramatically email the OP and offer his/her \"most sincere\" apologies, a free something, and a promise that they're \"taking the situation very seriously.\"

If Kristie is within distance of an LV store, might it work to bring the bag and receipt directly to the store and either have the store exchange (if it's in stock) or order if it's out of stock? Does the receipt indicate the bag actually ordered or the one shipped?

Regardless of the product the OP has a legitimate bitch here. No matter what the product is or who the vendor is if the vendor hands over the wrong product for the price purchased then they have to take the product back and replace it with the item purchased. Calling a single hair \"use\" is completely asinine even for LV standards.

If the chargeback and/or attempt at exchanging the purse to a local LV store prove to be unsuccessful, just pull a Pat Dori and sue them in small claims, serving the local store. Between the potential settlement, default judgement, or actually pleading your case, your chances at getting some form of recourse are pretty high.

@Randy Treibel: I believe the OP when she says that all it took was her looking at the bag to know that something was wrong. LV sent the OP the wrong bag, one that cost $25 less than what she paid. All she is asking is for LV to give her the bag that she paid for. This is not an unreasonable request.

This actually does not surprise me. Louis Vuitton is notorious for treating customers like this. On one hand it is good that they are vigilant against people who do abuse return policies (use and return, of which there are many!), on the other hand they themselves often abuse this vigilance to refuse returns that are completely valid.If it clearly states on your order that you ordered something different from what you received, and the bag is in reasonably good condition, you should have no trouble at all with the chargeback. Just to be a nudge, isn't the point of this website to share stories of good or bad customer service? It's really irrelevant whether the OP should have bought it or not. What could have been done with the money..blah, blah. The point being, she made an expensive purchase, did not get what she ordered, returned it and was sent the incorrect item back, accused of using it, when it was the wrong item. The company was rude to imply she was lying when as stated, their error was the reason for the return in the first place. A hair? Call Maury, maybe he can do a DNA test on it, prove that it isn't the OP!

@coren: It's smaller than the one she wanted, so I'm guessing it doesn't fit the stuff she would be carrying in it. There's usually an established set of contents that you're needing do lug, so if you bought a bag to carry around your usual array of, say, wallet, water bottle, and nunchucks and then couldn't fit the nunchucks in, then the bag doesn't work.

@coren: I think the OP meant \"why would I have used it\" and for the reason you stated: Why would she use a bag she didn't want and knew she would have to return if she couldn't even get her stuff in there. I don't think she meant that she literally could not have used the bag at all no matter what.

i stopped reading earlier comments since those were jabs at the OP for buying an expensive purse in the first place. but anyway...(the 25 is a lot smaller than the 30 she wanted, so i can understand why she wouldn't want it)

that's really weird. i've received outstanding services from LV. i've even returned a purse i've used* (put my wallet and keys in and carried it around for a day), decided it wasn't exactly all i thought it would be, then returned it to the store. the in-store return policy is \"the purse must be re-sale condition\". seems you were unlucky with returning it by mail. try going to the store. people tend to be more rude over the phone or behind a monitor than when infront of another person.

@all the people annoyed about the cost... by spending the $$ on the bag, she helped circulate money. LV pays suppliers, who all benefit... So what if their employees are \"overpaid?\" They'll just spend their excess money on more things that employ people.

I'd much rather give a village in Africa $100 in exchange for some goods vs. donate it to a random charity. One is sustainable, and one's just something to make you feel \"good\".

Luxury is loosing its luster. Not only are many of the 'It' bags now mass produced in Sweat shops in China, the same shops that make knock-offs, but customers can be treated like criminals. Accused of lying and not send the right bag with apologies! outrageous!

I'll take my money and spend it with small upcoming designers that are hungry for my business and will bend over backwards to give me top service. And a great handbag made in the USA.

I'm a bit surprised - it seems that usually high end designers/boutique types have very liberal return policies. Maybe I'm wrong on that, but they don't have much of an excuse for being stingy with a 90% margin.

That is why I love Dooney and Bourke. The customer service is excellent and the Customer for them is #1 and is always right. Not even Couch could get close to the service of Dooney and Bourke, it is money well invested and not as pricey as Louis Vuitton.

Agreed. If it's still within the return window, take it to a store. I live four hours away from the nearest store and only get there every three months or so. I bought a travel bag at Saks and decided it was too small, took it back to Saks and they didn't have the one I wanted but the store did. I went over to the store, got the bigger bag and they took it back with no problems. Looking at my receipts, they were almost a month apart.

Always buy with AMEX, as they will refund you within the first 90 days if the store won't.

if someone wanted to borrow a bag for use once time and return it...there is a website for that....you rent a bag and return it! and as far as the person who asked about the store return...you make a great point, but its possible the lady doesnt live near an LV store. I came from OK,and there is no LV store with in 200 miles where I lived. And I am most ceartinly not driving 200 + miles to return something that I ordered online.

My daughter bought a Louis Vuitton bag. I bought her the key fob to match $275. the LV's on the bag were wearing off so she brought it back to store. At first they said there was nothing they could do after 2 tries they finally sent it away She recieved a call that the bag was found to be defective. they no longer make the bag (was limited edition Stephen Sprouse) so they couldn't replace it. they gave her store credit. Now what do we do with $275. key fob in bright green. I asked for credit so she can match a new bag to key chain. was told no and told about exchange policy. This is not our fault the bag was DEFECTIVE. They would not give me anyones name to complain to because the Manager has final say. Don't say call customer service because I have. they told me to email on web site. Like I'll ever hear from them again. Sadly my daughter saved for her bag for 21st birthday. She had a great bag and matching key chain. All we want to to be made whole again. Bag and matching chain. A high end retailer should do this just because it is the right thing. I know Nordstroms would. Exactly how many bags a year do you have to buy in order for them to provide you with customer service. I am now not proud to say that I own Louis Vuitton bags. Does anyone have any idea who else I can contact to help resolve this.
