He noticed a sticker on the back telling him to call a 1-800 number for warranty repair rather than returning the tank to the store. So he did. And he got the runaround.

Chris says:

Do you know that Home Depot sells G.E. Hot Water Tanks? Do you know that those tanks come with a 6 year warranty? And did you know that if you get a defective tank from Home Depot there is a sticker on the tank with a 1-800 number to call for warranty service rather than taking the tank back out and returning it to the store? And when you call the number they help diagnose your problem and set up a service call with a G.E. repair tech that covers your area?

This all happened over Easter Weekend at my parents' house. They are elderly and my dad is handicapped. The people at the 1-800 number were wonderful….until Monday afternoon. That's when my parents got a phone call telling them that while GE would happily overnight them a replacement thermostat to replace the defective one on the tank they had no G.E. service techs in the Western Massachusetts area. Instead they suggested that my parents find a plumber and have it fixed themselves. They said that if the plumber submitted the proper paperwork to G.E. that he would be reimbursed "up to $100" for his efforts. What plumber is going to come and do repairs to a tank that he didn't install for "up to $100" if he submits the proper paperwork to G.E. after the fact?

In other words, Home Depot sells hot water tanks from G.E. with a warranty that G.E. is unable to fulfill in the Western Massachusetts area. But consumers don't find that out until it is too late. Needless to say I am following The Consumerist's advice on how to escalate this as well as filing complaints with the appropriate Better Business Bureau office and the Massachusetts State Attorney General's office for warranty fraud.

We asked Chris to keep us informed, and a day later we got this:

Yesterday afternoon I received an arrogant, obnoxious call from someone in Alabama that makes the hot water tanks and also provides the service on the warranty for G.E. He insisted that by offering to reimburse my parents or a hired plumber (up to $100) that they were still offering warranty service. When I explained that it says nothing like that on the written warranty he had no response. He offered to call and speak with my parents. When he did so he told my mother that if she made multiple calls to multiple plumbers he was sure that she could find someone to do the job for under $100!! Needless to say we all found that unacceptable for something that was broken out-of-the-box.

About 30 minutes after that I was involved in a conference call with someone representing Frank Blake, CEO of Home Depot, the manager of the store in West Springfield, MA where the tank was purchased and also the person responsible for handling contracts between Home Depot and G.E. All three seemed genuinely shocked that G.E. would not honor their warranty in Western Massachusetts. None of them had ever heard of this happening. I was the first to bring this to anyone's attention at Home Depot and they were more than happy to help my parents resolve the issue. In other words, Home Depot was backing the warranty that G.E. wouldn't! From a business and legal perspective they weren't at all obligated and they could have told me that but didn't. As of this email, a plumber from Home Depot is scheduled to be at my parent's house today to fix or entirely replace the defective tank. They said that they would be dealing with G.E. when this was all taken care of.

I can honestly say that I was totally shocked by the positive customer service commitment from Home Depot. I never expected this response in a million years. Frank Blake and his people, especially Chris, the manager in West Springfield, have gone way above and beyond what was expected. As for G.E., I got exactly the response I expected; arrogance, ignorance and completely ignored by the higher-ups I emailed on par with Frank Blake.

Good job, Home Depot!

Comment from the UK so you can see the difference- Here the store is legally responsible for defective goods. Anything sold must be fit for the purpose for which it is advertised, unless defects etc are drawn to your attention before the sale.

Otherwise a vendor can not refuse to replace or refund - your choice- not theirs (unless obviously its your fault!)

GE does not manufacture any water heaters. The GE branded water heaters at Home Depot are manufactured by Rheem in Mexico. GE also has no service agreements with Home Depot and is involved in name only. So the failure lies squarely with Home Depot and the way they set up warranty service with Rheem. This is similar to Lowes which sells Whirlpool water heaters....and they don't maunfacture any either. It's all in the NAME.

Think about all the costs associated. A trade worker that just graduated from trade school doesn't have student loans and can start working and saving right away (or may already have a job that is paying for schooling). A doctor or lawyer, for example, would typically have a huge debt load right out of school. So, while the doctor's paying student loans, the tradesperson is working and able to put money away. The tradesperson has the most valuable asset- time. Remember, you can always make more money, but you can never make more time.

Require assembly with lots of little parts that sometimes go missing, and mailing the parts to the customer is cheaper than having to issue credit to the store for a defective item because of some 10 cent bolts.

We had a similar occurrence with a GE dryer from HD. Unit was installed last summer and sounded like it had a roll of quarters in it. Called HD told to call GE. Called the credit card company and got a chargeback. GE eventually came to look at it. Repairman said it was damaged during install. Using feet to bend the frame to temporally fix it, now it sounded like there was just pocket change in it. Ordered new panels and instaled those. Sound is now down to a penny or two. We still haven't paid for it. A slightly noisy dryer for free I can live with. However we still had to make multiple calls to HD and GE, have two service calls, and write two six page letters to the credit card company. Moral of the story, ALWAYS use a credit card to make major purchases, and don't buy appliances from HD

Home Depot rocks. Every time I go in, there are actual knowledgeable people (not 16 year old kids, but in many cases retired contractors or otherwise very experienced people) available to help and answer questions.

By contrast, every time I've been in Lowe's it's like pulling teeth to get even the most basic service. After a particularly awful experience, my business partner called the district manager of Lowe's and was told, almost verbatim, "Sounds like Lowe's isn't able to make you happy, perhaps you should just shop elsewhere." Needless to say, we haven't shopped at Lowe's in ages.

Really nice to be able to see a big chain like Home Depot really "get" customer service and actually deliver it, rather than just paying lip service.

As was easily predicted, the guy cut quality in both products and service and saw short term gains that later cost the company BIG TIME! He walked away with $400 million for nearly running the company into the ground. That guy should be put out of our misery.... He's done an outstanding job at Chrysler to, hasn't he?

BTW.... if HD sold the product and there isn't any disclaimers as to the return policy (there's none that I'm aware of for a stock product like this.) Then they ARE legally bound to fix the issue or take it back for a full refund. But kudos for them stepping up either way.

Once we had HD install a dishwasher. We had a heck of a time months later when we tried to remove it because we were redoing the floor. I called our Olympia, WA Home Depot for advice. It was Sunday and it was our last shot because the floor people would be at our house the next morning.

Much to my surprise, one of their employees (who had no connection to the installation) volunteered to stopped by our house on his way home and helped my husband get the dishwasher out. The guy was great.

The quality of HDs vary, but ours is really awesome.

Normally it would be a flip of a coin go to either Lowes or HD in Lewisville, TX but lately I find myself going to HD a heckuva lot more. There is nothing wrong with the Lowes but Home Depot really has gotten A LOT better over the last few months.

I'm not saying that the OP's handicapped father should have been responsible to schlep a hot water tank back to Home Depot... I'm just speaking generally:

If you have a problem that someone might help over the phone, by all means it's OK to call the number first. If there's clearly a defective part, return the darn thing to the store.

That said, I agree with the pumbing installers here- If you purchase the item from Home Depot, there is the expectation that you will install it yourself.
But you shouldn't have to call all over to get a repair job. If a company cannot ervice an area, they should not sell there.Period.

I am a plumbing wholesaler, and this practice is industry standard. Warranty issues are always handled through the manufacturer, and not the distributor. This policy is a legal business practice, as the manufactuers do not have their own outlets. However, this is why I always recommend purchasing from a wholesaler. Wholesalers have tremendous product knowledge and respect their customers and will work hard with their manufacturer's representatives to get you the parts you need immediately. Filing a complaint with the BBB won't do anything- this is standard procedure. Home Depots get cheaply manufacturered versions of products, and this is why they break easier. $100 labor credits are standard as well, and plumbers who use a wholesale supplier are used to this and that should absolutely cover your labor. Most reputable plumbers will not install heaters purchased at Home Depot.

Without a doubt, I can tell you that GE does not honor the warranty on their products. I had a washing machine that went bad while in warranty and not only would they not honor it, they tried to charge me for two service calls - neither of which got the washer to run at all. My parents had a similar problem with a GE refrigerator. They tried to charge them for service calls for a 3 month old refrigerator that died (never mind that they didn't fix it or pay for the spoiled food).

I'm glad to see Home Depot step up like this. After a number of years of providing poor service, they've made a real effort in the last couple of years to be much more consumer-friendly. Kudos to them.

So we had a GE dishwasher and the thing leaked where the leak couldn't be seen and it eventually warped the floor. GE not only replaced the dishwasher but replaced the whole kitchen floor so that there wouldn't be a mismatch of tiles. I have no complaints with GE. When we redid the kitchen, we specified GE appliances.
