It's just endless bullshit from both the customers AND the management.</p><p>One of the many areas they jerked us around on was pay. When I was hired they had a pay rate of $9.50/hr through training and $10.50 once you hit the floor with regular raises to follow depending on how long you stayed there.</p><p>What started happening is that people would get hired, do the few weeks of classroom training (which was practically nothing), collect paychecks and then leave before they even took a single phone call.</p><p>So management responded by offering a LOWER starting wage, ostensibly to make it look less attractive for those wanting to cash in and get out.</p><p>Shockingly, this lead to a decrease in the amount of quality workers hired, since no one wanted call center work at $8/hr (most centers pay more than this).</p><p>Near the end of my time there, another company took over the company and gave us all a decent raise, as a result our metrics improved significantly. Imagine that.</p><p>Call center work is insanely repetitive and stressful. You deal with agitated customers all day, get treated like crap from your bosses, get micromanaged beyond belief (go one second over on a break? Compare a woman in HR to a man in IT and yes, the man makes more. Compare a woman in IT to a man in IT and they're much closer in pay rate. Most mothers with a family traditionally NEED the job . Many low income and or service sector employees really need the job . And in reality I think many businesses/HRs/managers pay accordingly in that they assume the employee won't go anywhere else because they NEED the job .</p><br /><p>I think many service sector jobs in particular actually look for women or mothers to hire under the assuption they will be happy just to be working irreguardless of pay and conditions . This mentality can limit the employee pool in many areas .</p><br /><p>But then multi national corporations use this very same mentality with entire countries .</p></p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(12365756, 'u1itn0w2day')\">Reply</a></div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) --> <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" > <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"reply-container\" > <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-12380404\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=488475\"><img src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-488475-100x100.png\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=488475\">HogwartsAlum</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/04/even-indians-hate-indian-call-centers.html#comment-12380404\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-04-26T21:07:54-05:00\">April 26, 2009 9:07 PM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(12380404);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=12380404');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>@<a href=\"#c12365756\" rel=\"nofollow\">u1itn0w2day</a>:</p><p>Yes, they do. I called recently to see if I could somehow set a language \"preference\" for my ATM card. Look, I took 4 years of Spanish, yet the only Spanish I know is mostly from television commercials. So I called the support line. <br />Talk about something NOT on a script. How many people call so they can save 5 seconds while at the ATM? The person on the other end could not seem to understand and you could hear them clicking/flipping through the answers they can give you before they finally told me there is no way to make it so I don't have to choose. The first is to sell or get new business. In these cases, you typically have an American educated English speaker who answers the phone on the first couple rings. The second is in the instance when the company already has your money. In this case, their only goal is to keep as much of it as possible. In this case, service is shoddy, you get stuck calling someone from Delhi, and nobody can help you. Companies also outsource their accounting calls to them. I had an incredibly frustrating conversation with a call-center employee who was representing the Accounts Payable department of a major retailer. It's the wal-mart-ization of certain portions of the economy, including ones that generally require some sort of support for a number of consumers at one time or another (IT support being probably the most visible). People want products as cheap as possible, but don't want to *pay* for the support they may require. You paid a bit more for a machine that (hardware-wise) probably isn't as expensive as the price tag, but you were able to call, get decent support, and go on your way. THAT was the cost in the price tag, and THAT is what people just don't want to pay (but they want the right to complain about the subpar \"support\" they get from outsourced call centers, not realizing they're causing the desire for outsourcing - support in any company is a loss-leader, and if customers don't want to offset some of that burden, management at most companies will find ways to bite into that apple, usually through outsourcing to some 3rd world country.</p></p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(12403241, 'cluberti')\">Reply</a></div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) --> <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" > <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments --> </div> <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-12366488\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=525134\"><img src=\"/css/images/default.gif\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=525134\">gatewaytoheaven</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/04/even-indians-hate-indian-call-centers.html#comment-12366488\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-04-25T21:40:18-05:00\">April 25, 2009 9:40 PM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(12366488);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=12366488');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>@<a href=\"#c12366426\" rel=\"nofollow\">lestat730</a>: That's because you're paying out like a fool to buy their overpriced product.</p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(12366488, 'gatewaytoheaven')\">Reply</a></div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) --> <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" > <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"reply-container\" > <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-12366733\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=82119\"><img src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-82119-100x100.png\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=82119\">lestat730</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/04/even-indians-hate-indian-call-centers.html#comment-12366733\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-04-25T21:58:19-05:00\">April 25, 2009 9:58 PM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(12366733);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=12366733');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>@<a href=\"#c12366488\" rel=\"nofollow\">gatewaytoheaven</a>: Not the point. There are numerous organizations here in the USA paying minimum wages and expect ENORMOUS productivity from their hourly paid staff, including call times, number of calls fielded, number resolved and these are doen wiothout even any restroom breaks. Imagine the horrors of missed credit card details or questions, when thebanks' fees are rising almost at exponential rates. Here at the Call Center I work at we have a lot of Indian's who work here but they are well trained and they know the United States so that makes them on par with us.</p><br /><p>If accents are a problem I hate to inform you but every U.S State and city has a different accent some are worse then trying to understand someone from India's Call Centers. For example Massachusetts who to be honest with you have the worst accents in the English Lanauage.</p><br /><p>Well, they are one step behind the Welsh of England but really India's only negative is they have a different culture and don't understand us and we don't understand them but that still is a huge problem.</p></p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(12375459, 'Pious_Augustus')\">Reply</a></div> <!-- if it's a top level category ' --> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (top level parent) --> </div>","","","<div class=\"comments-content\"> <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-12378337\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"\"><img src=\"/css/images/default.gif\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\">BytheSea </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/04/even-indians-hate-indian-call-centers.html#comment-12378337\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-04-26T18:22:59-05:00\">April 26, 2009 6:22 PM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(12378337);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=12378337');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>So basically you have to work your way up to get the better job with more money and better creature comforts.
