I haven't read the details of this lawsuit but a lot of CR (controlled release) or XR (extended release) medications work because there are tiny holes in the capsule that allow the medication to escape at a predetermined speed. That way, you get the same amount of benefit over several hours rather than a surge of benefit when you first take the pill and then nothing until you take the next pill. If the capsule is cracked, the medication gets released much faster, which negates the whole point of getting the controlled release version.

I also went insanely bipolar. After talking to several people, I found I was by far not the only one on who Paxil acted as crazy juice. My friend's mom was on paxil when she thought the Easter Bunny had come to kill her (it was a guy delivering flowers).
Funny now, scary at the time.

@ElizabethD: Remeron (mirtazipine) adds the poundage a good two months quicker *easily* :( Paxil did give me cotton mouth though...
