::shrug:: These people seem to think that folks are going to be encouraged to shake real life babies if they download and use this app.

Don't like the app? Don't download it. It's really that simple. The world is full of offensive stuff, and you can't get rid of it all.

I played GTA 4 the other day, and as of yet, I haven't shot any hookers, ran over a couple dozen innocent pedestrians, or lead police on a high speed pursuit.

Oh well, I suppose the day is still young.

I don't think the idea of a game where people shake babies is a pleasant one, but I'm also not about to perpetuate the foolish belief that doing things in a video game makes one more likely to do it in real life.

As a video game fan, GTA is a fantastic game and is always under shit because of the violence and other stuff you can do in the game. They are always trying to tie video games, music and movies to violence and they have done a good job because people who are not really there mentally(less IQ, missing some screws, and my favorite...stupid) think that they are still playing these games or movies etc.

Examples: Columbine School= Leo Decapro in a movie(I forgot which right now) This is where they got their wardrobe from and all.

Stupid people emulate what they see even if its not real. Once people are smarter, maybe we could have more \"out of the box\" items like this.

Sad but true.

Disgusting. Horrible. As a mother, it makes me ill to even think about people laughing at it, even on a game as a joke.

I really hope some four or five year old doesn't find this on their parent's or older sibling's phone, and try and copycat it on their baby brother.

It's a free country. So even though it disgusts me, they have a right to sell it. I hope they pull it though. It's awful.

@ailema: It could happen in the same room, even if they are not left alone. It only takes a few seconds to shake a baby to death or cause brain damage. By the time mom runs from one end of the living room to the other it's too late.

That being said, I don't think there is a high likelihood of that happening, I just hope it doesn't happen. It's just my \"mom thoughts\" that run through my head when I read things like this story. I know I shouldn't worry so much.

I am against censorship, and even though I find the product distasteful and sick they have a right to sell it. I don't think it's in their best interests as a company to sell it, and personally would be happy if they pulled it because it bothers me so much. But they do have a right to sell it.

@Julia789: Why does a four year old have access to their parent's iPhone? Why does the parent have this application on their phone? Why does the older brother/sister have the application on their phone? Why don't the parents know what applications their children are downloading?

What's stopping a four year old from sitting on their baby, or stepping on its head, accidentally, while mom is on the other end of the living room? What's stopping the child from feeding the baby something poisonous, or poking it in the eye until it goes blind, or any number of other horrible things?

Yes, the application is tasteless, but frankly, its content should be the least of anyone's concerns in this scenario.

As a mother myself... I wish I had had an app to shake in effigy every time my real life sweetheart cried endlessly despite efforts to comfort. It would have been therapeutic. Of course, in my sleep deprived haze I found crying on the bathroom floor to be just as useful.

@JamieSueAustin: As tasteless as the app might be, it's the first thing that's actually attracted me to the iPhone. Not for the \"vicariously shake The Precious to death\" aspect alone, of course. From the time she was 3-4 months old, the fastest way to get my younger daughter to stop crying was to show her a crying baby (usually herself in the mirror), so this app would come in handy when I don't have a mirror at hand.

If PARENTS would take the responsibility to TEACH THEIR GODDAMN KIDS THEMSELVES they wouldn't have to worry that they're learning inappropriate lessons from societal media.

Tasteless? Sure.
Appropriate? HELL YES.

If you have a problem with what I just said,
STOP and take note:
I DID NOT say it was appropriate for children. That's not my call, it's only the call of the kid's parent/guardian.
But then it's not anyone elses call as to what is appropriate for me as a responsible adult. (iPhone != baby, and if your baby appears similar then an app should be the LEAST of your worries.)

And there IS a reason that you have to enter a password to even download an app.
AND it IS possible to DISABLE/HIDE the app-store on the device.
There are tools at your disposal to keep this from your kids iPods. Stop being lazy and use them if you don't like the app. But keep your shitty parenting out of my app store.

Basically it comes down to the fact that no one has the right to impose their own parenting on others.

Sorry for the excessive rant, but any&all attempts to parent the public BURN MY BALLS.
Parents should focus on parenting their OWN KIDS, NOT Apple's app store.

@Coop: I don't think it's necessarily about protecting children. Some people just found the app offensive, and apparently the right people at Apple found it offensive enough to pull it. They figured they had more to lose in PR or whatever by keeping the app.

@Coop: I think that the backlash against Apple wouldn't be so strong if it wasn't for the fact that they allowed this app while at the same time prohibiting farts and boobs. That's the fuel for the anger. Apple brought subjective values into the picture, and so they invited this.

I gunned down and set ablaze high school marching bands and flocks of ostriches in Postal 2, too. I guess that means I'm likely to go do it in real life as well.
Frankly as a parent who's fantasized about conjuring super villian like strength and putting my kids through a plaster wall before putting him in time out, yeah, I'd like an app that lets me fake it rather than do it in real life because let's face it, life isn't a video game.

Sane people know that.

What the f@ck is this? There's a demographic that's more likely to shake a freaking baby? Who came up with that stereotype??

That being said, if you don't like the app, don't download it. I hate how protectionist this society has became. My girlfriend student teaches at a school where they're NOT ALLOWED TO JUMP ROPE OR HIGH FIVE ANYMORE.

FYI- I played mortal kombat and other violent videogames when I was a child and have never murdered anyone. Suck it, Joe Lieberman.

I think the app is disgusting and offensive, but in the light of Apple's attempting to decide that shaking boobs is bad while shaking babies is good (Pretty much mirroring our own society's whacky views, I might add), I'm gonna have to say: Just get an Android phone where even if Google decides to block your app from the official Market, you can freely publish it yourself.

Freedom isn't just about anyone able to do anything. It's also about groups of consumers telling Apple that they're offended enough by this app that they will make their life miserable. And it's about Apple's freedom to pull the app because they don't want PTA members marching on them.

Anyone that thinks Apple should keep the app has probably never had to deal with bad publicity and the consequences.

I agree that this is ghastly and tasteless, but I wouldn't support banning it. But I imagine Apple is going to do so to avoid even the threat of litigation, because all it would take is one shaken-baby incident involving somebody who has this app on their phone to set off a lawsuit and tons of bad publicity.

I find this app repulsive and distasteful. However, when I read the off-color remark about a pistol whipping your wife app, I actually got a bit of a laugh out of it. As a husband, I would never lay a hand on my wife, nor should any husband. But g_damn, sometimes a simulated one might be nice, just to relieve the frustration. Is that wrong?

I guess I'm just different than some of you posting here. I just don't see the problem with this app. Yes I'm a parent, yes I have two kids. But if you somehow make the (terrible) leap of logic that a silly baby shaking iphone app is going to lead to eventually desensitizing yourself to one day shake an actual real baby you are more delusional than even I am.

It's comedy, it's silly, it's something you would expect out of a MAD or Cracked magazine, but it does not deserve the harsh judgment its getting.

To me this is just a similar and just as tasteless as \"dead baby\" jokes we all told as elementary school kids, and still just as pedantically funny.

I think we all just need to stand back and let quirky be quirky...

The problem I have with this is the fact (I'm presuming) that you are literally shaking the phone to simulate shaking the baby. There are major campaigns underway that are getting the word out that shaking a baby is dangerous and can cause irreperable brain damage or even death. Many people aren't aware of the damage that can be caused and how serious this is.


When you provide a \"game\" such as this, it is taking away the seriousness of the act. When you play something like GTA, you know that when you run over someone with your car or shoot someone that you are causing bodily harmn or death. When you are playing a game that has you shake a baby, unless the game ends with you rushing to the ER, hearing that your baby has died, planning a funeral, and dealing with the grief and probable jail time, it desensitizes a casual user to the actual danger of shaking a baby. That user may be a parent one day and not realize the serious consequences of his or her actions.

Lots of tasteless games out there that don't correlate to real life behavior. I seem to recall a flash game involving firing penguins out of a cannon or some such where you got extra points of you were able to make the bird land on a spike (and I'm sure there are plenty of others just as bloody and childish).

I see why Apple pulled the app but this is just an overreaction.
