@AlexTNOA: This ain't no Shepherd's Pie (lord knows I eat enough of it.) The \"pie\" was originally created by enterprising shepherds hundreds of years ago. Taking left over food (usually meat and potatoes) they would mash the food into a satchel worn at the hip. While away from home all day to tend to their herds, they would dip into their satchel when they were hungry.

(On second thought, I'm surprised KFB hasn't jumped on this yet. Food bags worn at the hip, anyone?)

Really, as long as it has meat on the bottom that isn't chicken or fish, has vegetables atop that, then cheese, then mashed taters on the very top, it's good to go.

@AlexTNOA: Erm, the chicken is fried and there's cheese on top. Otherwise, it is basically an inverted meat pie.

To me, it seems like they've combined the cheapest stuff they have in the store, with some popcorn chicken, the topped it with cheese. The result? Decadently delicious and filling!

When I see foods like this, along with Taco Bell's recent adoption of the fried potato bit to fill out their value burritos, it just illustrates to me how fast foods are engineered to be ultra-cheap gut bombs... ...that I crave relentlessly.

I had one of these bowls the other night, as well as in the past. They are good, but it seems that my recent bowl was rather slack. The chicken was the smallest version of popcorn chicken they find. It's like they decided since it was on sale for $2.99, that they wouldn't give me the normal bowl.

Still, a drink and one of these bowls for less than they normally cost, isn't a bad deal. There pretty good when made right.

I would say it's KFC's most popular item, because everything else costs way too much there.

@ameyer: Looks to have the same amount of chicken, and less of everything else. The advert photo shows a much closer close-up, with relatively little potato or corn, to make the chicken stand out.

Also, the advert photo is clearly cold to make it look better, otherwise the cheese would have melted like it did in the real one.

@AngryEddy: I'm kinda confused by this article. I always thought it was common knowledge that food adverts looked way better than they do in reality. Personally I don't ever really feel mislead because I realize that a) the point of an advertisement is to look as good as possible and b) when you're cranking these things as fast as possible you don't have the time to make each one beautiful.

As far as the picture goes, it kinda looks like they got gypped on ingredients but fine otherwise.

What a letdown, because unfortunately(yes, I use the term unfortunately for a reason, given the resolution to eat healthier this year that I've done pretty good sticking with so far) I've been in the mood for some KFC lately, but there's no establishments I think within a 45 minute drive in good weather. So fortunately, this turned my appetite for their chicken elsewheres. Sound like making a sandwich on fresh whole wheat bread is the tastier option, and healthier by a longshot.

A two or three-piece meal won't hurt that resolution you've worked so, so hard at keeping. And you've done a great job at it. Treat yourself to a bucket - it could be yours in 45 minutes.

In fact, stop off at the movie store to get a DVD and then pick up your 20-piece party feast, and you could have a relaxing dinner at home this evening after a long, hard week.

atleast they have chicken. my kfc/tacobell is always out of chicken. sometimes they say that it will be a 20 minute wait. one time the cook was on break and wouldnt be back for 15 minutes plus the wait to cook the chicken. constantly giving the wrong sides. i remember my wife ordered us both potatoes with gravy once and we got two bowls of gravy. who the hell drinks gravy?

It looks pretty much exactly the way I would expect a bowl filled with mashed potatoes, corn, gravy, cheese, and fried chicken bits to look in real life. If anything, the problem here is with the promotional picture, which flaunts its artificiality by presenting the viewer with an image that would be physically impossible if the automatic assumptions about it were true. To put it more simply: if you put grated cheese on just-fried chicken bits, the cheese isn't going to stay pristine, it's going to melt within seconds, just like it obviously did in the reader's photo. If you dump a ladle full of gravy over corn and mashed potatoes, the gravy isn't going to form perfect little congealed rivulets of dark brown goodness, it's going to form a giant liquid pool - just like it did in the reader's photo.

Maybe I'm just hungry, but the second photo looks just fine to me. It's the first one that makes me think \"how much of this is actually plastic?\"

@Lokys: Aside from the plastic bowl? None of it, if I believe Food Network's \"Unwrapped\" and the story they did on food stylists sometime ago. Things have changed somewhat with laws for these food ads. By law, nowadays, US companies are only allowed to use real food in advertisements. Like...if you're advertising a cake, you're not allowed to use a styrofoam dummy cake. If you're advertising a TV dinner, you have to use the actual TV dinner in the commercials/photo shoots. You can use your plastic/fake food tricks on *other* food items in the ads, but not on the food that's the main focus of the ad.


This isn't to say that the food in the pictures is prepared exactly as they would be in real life, though, or that there isn't any (legal) fudging with the appearance of the food. Like...the one biggest thing I remember from the \"Unwrapped\" story I saw was the way that the food stylists had to do a photo shoot for a TV dinner. The food stylist brought in, like...a whole shipment of TV dinners...and looked at each one to find the \"perfect\" serving of turkey and the \"perfect\" serving of each side, then placed each thing just so in an empty TV dinner tray. It was painstaking work, if I remember right--the people involved with the photo shoot had to get everything positioned perfectly, right down to the very last kernel, crumb, or rivulet of gravy, and that took several hours.


In the case of this KFC mashed potato bowl, I'm guessing that there's no law about placing the food items in the bowl in exactly the same order as they'd be in real life? That's the main difference between the pic on the left versus the one on the right: The gravy is under the chicken pieces in the bowl left, but it's over the chicken in the bowl on the right. I'm also guessing that the food in the pic on the left is dead cold, since the cheese isn't melted. The food in the bowl is real--there really is FKC chicken, corn, gravy, cheese and mashed potatoes in it--but it's all had to be altered to some degree or another. The mashed potatoes had to be placed in that bowl just so. If that \"Unwrapped\" story was any indication, the corn was probably added to the bowl one kernel at a time--and the food stylist probably went through a LOT of corn to find the \"perfect\" kernels, one by one. Maybe the gravy was added with a syringe instead of being ladled on, and maybe the chicken pieces were only cooked on the outside, with a blow-torch or something, to look golden brown and delicious when they actually weren't, and then they were carefully arranged on top, piece by piece, not plopped into the bowl. And the cheese was probably placed on top with tweezers, piece by piece, and wasn't actually sprinkled on.


In other words: Of course there's cheating involved. It's just--the cheating may not be quite what you expect. The food in ads is fake, but not quite as fake as it could be.

I don't see the problem here. If the \"real-life\" picture was in focus, had been taken in better lighting, and had the color saturation boosted, it would look almost exactly like the ad.

The real problem here is that the \"real-life\" picture was taken by a crappy photographer.

The LAST time I went to KFC I got violently ill and loss 15 lbs over 1 week, and it took a full month for me to be able to eat normal food again. In fact some things I no longer eat because they no longer taste the same... No more Vitamin water now, I used to drink cases of that stuff, now just opening the bottle makes me slightly queasy. Same for Ice Tea from Arizona and Lipton and Nestea. Haven't tried Earl Grey lately.

I think I actually got dysentery from them.
I tell all my co-workers if they ever see me eat KFC again, I will pay each of them 50 bucks apiece.
I do miss their mash potato and gravy goodness, and the corn on the cob... Popeyes corn on the cob is bland by comparison...

This rant reminds me of an article I saw years ago about how when magazines did food shoots they had to specially package up the food before they threw it away because of all the chemicals they put on it to make it look good which made the food toxic.

@erytheis: i know at least one fast food place i worked at sliced a wedge out of the back of the burger and stuck a wider wedge of styrofoam in it to make the patty look larger.
dry ice under the fries to make them 'steamy' and the ketchup and mustard were acrylic paint.

@erytheis: Milk is typically Elmer's glue, since it shows up whiter. Milk generally tends to look an unappetizing light grey. The bubbles/foam on the tops of drink are usually soap bubbles.

I don't understand what the big complaint is about this thing. You're combining a bunch of sloppy food in a bowl. It's not supposed to look beautiful. Would you want to pay the price to have them arrange your food carefully in reality? Do you want to see advertisements for the perfectly edible (even tasty) food that is not attractive?

when i lived in the Philippines, it was normal to eat a dish with a rice base and meat in a bowl like plate, with a fork and a spoon. to be honest, its something that has never left me, despite the fact that i was only there for a short time.

I'm going to break away from the popular boys and girls sporting the same opinion over and over again and say that I've eaten this thing, and it's really not that bad at all. You get what you order: fried chicken orbs over a mound of mashed potatoes and gravy, corn and cheese. It tastes great and fills you up. I'll probably order it again, assuming I stop by a KFC at some point soon.

Now the fact that the real thing doesn't look anything like it's advertisement shouldn't be a shock to anyone at all these days. Someone please show me an advertised food, any at all, that looks exactly like its ad. Foodstuff adverts/menu items are built by artists to look as delicious, appetizing, clean and LARGE as possible. The actual food never, EVER looks like its advertisement.

I guess what I don't understand is why eating food from a bowl means you are a failure who lacks dignity. Basically anything you eat from a bowl could be separated out into its component ingredients and eaten that way, but who here deconstructs their soup, or casseroles, or pasta, or salads for the sake of \"dignity?\"

Put a little more mashed potatoes in the bowl, but the chicken on top of the gravy, and take the picture before the cheese melts. Voila! Marketing picture.

I'm not really that offended by the product, although I don't know why we have to put cheese on everything.
