Will sponsored pot holes sell chicken? KFC seems to think so. They've asked the City of Chicago if they can fix potholes — in exchange for including a white stencil saying the spot was "Re-freshed by KFC."

Despite the fact that the ads would be a "distraction and safety hazard,"— both Chicago and the State of Illinois are interested in partnering with a private company, says the Sun-Times.

Chicago certainly has its pothole problems - the Transportation Department has filled more than 250,000 street craters this winter. Department spokesman Brian Steele said the city has a lot of questions about KFC's program, like what type of asphalt is used. The city also doesn't allow ads in the public way, because they could create a distraction and safety hazard.

But Steele said the city doesn't reject the idea out of hand - Commissioner Thomas Byrne has already been looking into possible corporate sponsorship for pothole repair - and one unnamed company is a possibility.

...
"We are open to a variety of public-private opportunities and we'd be glad to discuss this one with the firm and see if it fits with Illinois requirements for quality, safety, timeliness and cost-effectiveness," said IDOT spokesman Marisa Kollias.

Wait... Illinois has "requirements for quality, safety, timeliness and cost-effectiveness?" Maybe they should ask KFC if they want to buy some parking meters, too.

@Eyebrows McGee (on Twitter: LPetelle): It isn't a "relic of machine politics." It's flat out machine politics. I was at the Field Museum the other weekend and they had a little survey out where visitors could vote on the name of their next exhibit. One dad told his child "No, honey, only mark next to one" and another visitor piped up "No, it's Chicago, vote early and often!" Suddenly, a large group of people who didn't know each other was comparing sayings about Chicago's politics. "In Chicago, everyone votes--including the deceased."

I've lived here my entire life and Richard M. has been the mayor since I was 5 years old. That's a loooong time for one person to be Mayor, especially since there's no sign he's planning on retiring soon.

And as for it costing less to run a machine government, I have to point out our lovely %10 sales tax. Cheaper? I wish!

Yeah, you can get away with being corrupt and competent here. Corrupt and incompetent, as ARP pointed out, will get you impeached.

Another great idea for the privatized center of the mid west. 50,000 new sights for adds. Perhaps they should use old chicken wings laced with asphalt. Perhaps there is a KFC brand asphalt on the market. Other companies would chip in and soon Chicago's roads would brim over with colorful logos. Politicos could get in the act and there would be Daley pot holes and Sen Durbin pot holes. The posabilities are endless. We citizens could have a pot hole for our very own. Where do we sign up?

I'm so torn on this - this winter, I had to fix a flat tire. Last winter, a gaping pothole on Milwaukee avenue blew two of my tires instantly (I filed with the city and they actually footed the bill on that one).

Potholes are a huge problem for Chicago that never seems to get more than a temp fix since with the fluctuating weather all they can do is tamp asphalt in the holes, which creates a nice bumpy ride and invariably gets dug out again by all the cars driving over it.

I would love to see the holes get fixed, even through corporate sponsorship, but then again, I don't like the idea that city responsibilities here are seemingly all being auctioned off to the highest bidder.

On a side note - not so happy to read about the city re-paving park roads for the Olympic committee and admitting there isn't enough money to fix the roads we all use every day.

I'm disgusted by the eager endorsement of posters in this thread. KFC wants to do this because it will prove very profitable, not because they are altruistic and kind to drivers. Do we need to live in a society where any and all public works projects are "sponsored" because we refuse to raise the tax dollars ourselves?

If KFC raised the price of chicken $0.05 /lb to pay for this, would we consider that a victory of privatization? You get to drive over the roads, but you don't HAVE to buy the chicken. Anything else is socialism?

Just look at what google did a year or so ago they announced the take back a sent email feature and played it up and built on it for a couple weeks before making it clear on april 1st it was a prank.

I love this idea, but I can't get past the slogan "Refreshed by KFC". What on earth does that have to do with chicken or promoting their brand?

When I think refreshed, that would be a far better slogan if the potholes were being filled by companies promoting Frebreeze, Dial soap, or maybe Summer's Eve? Those are products where "refreshed" is part of the brand message.

Now KFC had SO many opportunities for clever chicken crossing the road references!

No, I want the pot holes fixed by the people I am already paying my tax dollars to fix them.

I don't need more damn advertising taking up more of the empty space in the world.

Ads are becoming more and more ubiquitous every where we look. Advertisers are always looking for that next edge that will get their ads noticed. It's a vicious cycle that will lead to things like ads on roadway warning signs, or painted on the streets (other than this KFC idea).

Table of Contents in magazines are now on page 20, with 19 pages of ads in front of it you have to wade through to find.

Pop-up ads on websites move, making it harder to click the x.

The world is filled with examples of annoying advertising tricks such as these. And they'll only continue to get worse.

So go on and eat your KFC, and continue to feed the Madison Avenue monster.

Look what happened when the non-profit "Green of Detroit" tried to do some beautifying -- the city employees grumbled that it was their job, and effectively put a halt to the beautification efforts.
