When you're older, you probably do want to do this formally as part of your comprehensive death planning. When you're young and healthy, you may just show your brother when he comes to visit, so he'd know, just in case. If you have kids, your focus should be on what your executor would need to be able to find quickly to ensure your kids are cared for (medical records, school records, etc.) -- and, yes, executor, because if you have kids, you really need to have a will!</p><p>For us, since we're married, we're each other's backstops, and then my family is generally aware of where we file all the important stuff (and, having learned from my parents, it's pretty similar to their system, and my sibs mostly use a pretty similar system as well). When Mini-McGee arrives in the spring, we'll be executing new wills and formalizing the system a bit more.</p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(10905194, 'Eyebrows McGee (now with more baby!)')\">Reply</a></div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) --> <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" > <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments --> </div> </div> <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments --> </div> </div> <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments --> </div> </div> </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\"> <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-10895173\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=636090\"><img src=\"/css/images/default.gif\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=636090\">MooseOfReason</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/02/update-facebook-agrees-to-take-down-dead-relatives-page.html#comment-10895173\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-02-21T18:31:48-05:00\">February 21, 2009 6:31 PM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(10895173);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=10895173');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>Doesn't Facebooks new Terms of Service mean they can use Stephanie's brother's non-private pictures or information any way they want to?</p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(10895173, 'MooseOfReason')\">Reply</a></div> <!-- if it's a top level category ' --> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (top level parent) --> </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\"> <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-10895429\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=423957\"><img src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-423957-100x100.png\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=423957\">egoods</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/02/update-facebook-agrees-to-take-down-dead-relatives-page.html#comment-10895429\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-02-21T18:52:22-05:00\">February 21, 2009 6:52 PM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(10895429);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=10895429');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>Wow, it's not common that I get teary eyed reading consumerist (well, ok sad tears, not depressed tears about my mortgage). I'd like to think that my loved ones would have something better to remember me by than that.</p><p>I didn't comment on the original story, but was stunned that Facebook would respond in the way they did, banging on about their \"policy\".</p><p>Glad FB has done the right thing here. I think they need to tell their employees to handle requests like this a bit more sensitively, though. Fine, if they want such requests to come from next of kin, they should respond explaining this, rather than quoting some \"policy\" that they think should overrule the family's wishes. Facebook, you're just a bloody social networking website, why should the close family of a deceased person, next of kin or not, give two shits about your \"memorializing\" policy. I don't want people gawking at my profile, especially since not all of my friends are close and personal. Important people in my life will have other ways to remember me. I whole-heartedly agree that you need to leave your links/passwords for family to find so that they can carry out your wishes.
