@Farquar: I live in North Carolina. My previous stepfather was from a very rural area, and he ate this. Typically on crackers. I have watched him do it. They sell it at a lot of rural gas stations too, btw.
I was always under the impression that it was something of a midwestern thing. I know brain sandwiches have historically been popular in the Ohio/Indiana area.

Cracking open the skull to extract the brain is the easy part once the slaughtering is done.
Add it to a simple gravy and you're done! What could be easier?

I'd be more concerned if it had 1170% of the saturated fat intake. Most of that cholesterol is probably from the myelin around the axons of the neurons. That said, there's no way I'm putting that in my mouth.

Look, I've never tried Chitlins and never will.
The idea that they have to be soaked in Clorox and rinsed a lot to remove the fecal matter before they can be cooked and eaten, is for me, a MAJOR suggestion that this is a \"food\" I don't need to ever EAT.
Examine any grocery store. It will be chock-full of stuff that doesn't require soaking in bleach to make it edible. It's ALL better than that.
Likewise canned brains is pretty much at the bottom of the list right above chitlins. I dunno, eat some canned chili or tuna or something.
What's grosser? Baby pork brains. In Pork Placenta Sauce. Leftovers.

@Starfury: You can find brains and eggs on many restaurant menus in the South. It's quite popular with the mom n' pop places. That said, we found a can in a Food Lion in Charlotte some time ago and thought it was such a hoot we sent one to my sister in Alaska.
@Starfury: Florida. You find it in Florida. Ever since I was a kid I remember seeing it on the shelves... and not just at 'Bo's Liquor and Bait Store', but at normal places like Publix.

In high school, a friend of mine ate these on a dare. We then went to BK and he down two Whoppers. And somehow, I am the one with the weight problem.
On a side note, he said they were really good. But, I'm not eating them, that's for sure.
This product is clearly marketed toward zombies, who needn't worry about cholesterol.

Armor Star Pork Brains in Milk Gravy was featured in a column in the March 11, 1996 edition of New York Magazine. Unfortunately, it seems that the pictured pork brains scrambled with eggs is the only recipe in existence.
Brains 'n' Eggs
Ingredients
2-1/2 Tablespoons bacon grease
4 eggs
1/3 cup whole milk
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 can (5 ounce) pork brains in gravy (Rose Brand preferred)
Melt bacon grease in an iron skillet on low heat. Add pork brains to heated grease. Stir with a fork. Add salt and pepper and stir. Whisk eggs and milk together. Increase heat and add egg mixture to brains. Scramble to desired consistency. Serve immediately over toast. For a truly southern dish, serve with grits and apple butter.

I used to live in N.C. and found this item in virtually every grocery store. I have never been brave enough to sample it. But, scary food like this, definitely influenced my decision to move back to the West coast.

@Charlotte Rae's Web: There were only two grocery stores resonably close to me. A Winn Dixie and a Food Lion. They both carried it. It was just one of those things that tripped me out everytime I saw it. I did not mean it to be a bash on NC in general. I enjoyed my time there but needed to move on. I still own a home there.

I don't want to eat it; I just want it for my collection of nauseating canned foods (mushy peas, haggis, squid in ink, etc). We used to be able to find it with the potted meat circa 2000, and one of my friends had a can on his desk... he'd periodically hold it up to his roommate's ear and shake it. (Eiwwwww.) Now I never see it around.

@kittenfoo: I am from TN and people really do eat brains and eggs, squirrel and pork. Its not so bad. I know there are others who wanted to fess up but were to scared to claim it. Don't be scared to own strange food. I saw people eat balutt( the egg with leggs) in the PI and that was alot grosser.
@frodolives35: When I first moved to this part of the state in the mid 80s, one of the \"meat & three\" places in town offered brains on the menu. I personally think I would be more repulsed by head cheese (that name!) or souse meat. Even though I've lived here for over 30 years, I've never been persuaded to try brains.
@kittenfoo: head cheese can include brain matter. it's made by scalding the hair off the head and then boiling down the head until all the meat comes off/out and then mincing it up and putting it to set in its own bone gelatin.

@frodolives35: Brains (cattle, I think) are supposed to be a bit of a local specialty in the St. Louis area as well. My understanding is they're actually quite rich and mild, a real contrast to the strong gamey flavor of liver, kidneys, etc. I suspect I would probably like them if I got over the pretty random taboo response.

They're supposed to be delicious. A guy at work was telling me he had breakfast at his wife's family farm, and they scrambled up the eggs and brains, they called it something different, I forget what, but he said it was the most delicious thing ever. Then he found out they were pork brains. I want to try these sometime before I die.

My parents raised me to not say no to a food just because of the way it looked or smelled. But my mom never offered us this stuff. So I don't know if I'd just go out of my way to find it and try it. I'm sure there's someplace here in NYC that I could find it if I get the craving for it.
In the meantime, I am going to send her his story and she what she thinks.

My father used to eat this all the time. He died youngish, at 63, of a stroke. It's not actually the worse thing he ever ate. He ate it with scrambled eggs, it was disgusting.

I used to have a can of this on my monitor at my previous employer; we had it labelled as \"Backup Memory\".
Everyone who saw it was aghast that such a thing existed, but the real shocker was when they read that label and saw that cholesterol count.
After nearly five years on the monitor, the seal on the aluminum pop-top began to deform from the inside and expand.
We got it out of the office in time to avoid a hazmat situation indoors, but the feral cats went crazy in the dumpster later that afternoon...

Just had fond memories of fried pork brains with spicy mustard on wheat toast. Grandma knew how to cook ANYTHING.
I've had this quite a few times growing up. Mix this in with some scrambled eggs and put it on a homemade biscuit with tons of pepper. \"Oh my God\" indeed.

Odd that it's pretty reasonable in terms of calories and fat. It sounds disgusting, but I doubt it's really all that bad for you nutritionally. Can the body even absorb 3500mg of cholesterol at one time?

I think the bigger question is, HAS ANYONE ACTUALLY TRIED IT?
My parents travelled from New England to North Carolina for a relative's funeral once. When the family gathered for food afterwards, talked turned to regional foods. My father mentioned that he didn't like grits and the response from a cousin was classic:

I feel ill, omg. I will eat almost anything once, even raw, but never neurological bits. This is by far the worst I have ever seen.

Yep -- to process pig brains for consumption, they blow 'em out of the skull with compressed air... and the workers who inhale the bits fall mysteriously ill. Guess you can eat it, but not breathe it.

A good many years ago, when \"zines\" were the best thing out there ('cause the Interweb hadn't taken hold yet), a guy named Paul Lukas, who was way ahead of his time, had a zine called \"Beer Frame.\"

In Issue No. 6 (1996), Lukas found \"Armour Pork Brains with Milk Gravy.\" He cooked them in a skillet with some oil. And he ate them. For, you know, scientific purposes.

I'm not quite sure where Paul is today (sources say he's writing for ESPN.com), but he and Beer Frame are sorely missed. If ever content had a place on the Internet today, it's that zine.
fye brains in general are compose of high amounts of cholesterol. That being said it should not be to no surprise that the canned food contains large amounts of cholesterol, Besides if you are eating meat out of a can then you already have made a bad choice. :)
Seriously... who eats this stuff? And what recipes call for it? Even if it happens to be tasty to someone, that's a lot of cholesterol and sodium!

While it is funny, this product is no longer produced. Under the nutrition label it states that this product is distributed by The Dial Corporation (like the soap). However, The Dial Corporation no longer owns the Armour brand, they sold it a few years ago. Any cans found currently in grocery stores are likely several years old.
Pork brains? Ick? Gross?
You get a halthy dose of them every time you eat hot dogs and sausages. Enjoy.
We have several cans of this. We got it in Virgina. I have not tried it, nor will I. I got my boyfriend and a bunch of his Army buddies to eat it one night while they were drinking. It smells like dog food. They dipped corn chips in it. Nasty.
It's rich in milky, brainy goodness.

I have a can of this stuff on my desk at work. It has never failed to terrorize new hires. Anytime anyone (new) is pining for a snack (at work), I offer them this... and their hunger is abated forthwith.
I bought it at a (local but long gone) ephemera collectible store called Uncle Mame in San Francisco. Sadly, the can, although shrink-wrapped, is bulging ominously (it has one of those super-convenient pull-tab tops, for all your on-the-go brain consuming goodness) so I have to keep it in a clear acrylic sealed box in case it explodes.
Actually, I hope it does explode. \"OWWWW! My Brains! OWWWWWWW\" nom nom nom...
John Coltrane's favorite breakfast was Brains and Eggs, which was Pork Brains in milk gravy combined with scrambled eggs. Whatever he did was usually on a higher level, including cholesterol consumption,
it occurs to me that consumerist could really use a hall of fame to preserve legendary posts like this, similar to the best of craigslist. things like this should be remembered for as long as our shot attention spans can bear it.

OK gang, I'm one of the gross ones. Yes, I'm from the south. Tennessee to be exact (falling into the stereotype yet?). My grandmother used to feed these to me when I was a kid and I never knew what they were, but I loved them! One day I asked her what they were and she told me \"Pork brains\". I enjoyed them, so it didn't matter to me what they were. I still eat them today and my son likes them too. They are much harder to find these days. All of the big grocery chains used to carry them. They were the Armour brand in the picture. It seems like all of a sudden they were gone. Now I have to go to a small grocery store called \"Hills Grocery Store\" to find an off brand called \"Rose Brand\". Guess what gang, the Rose Brand has 3190mg of Cholesterol! 1060% of you recommended daily value. I guess the DV% has changed a bit. Yes, we southerners do eat some weird foods, but all cultures have their own weird foods. I've tried pig ears (hated them), pigs feet (hated them), and mountain oysters (pig testicles (hated them)). I do eat souse meat on occasion and it's OK, depending on the brand, but really a gross product to be honest. It's loaded with everything they don't put in the \"good\" meats. I've never tried chitterlings or \"chitlins\" as you mostly hear (small intestines of pigs), but I probably will someday because I hear that they are good if they are prepared well. A lot of these strange foods came from the slave days in the south when the scum bag slave owners gave the parts of the animals they didn't want to their slaves to eat and the slaves learned to cook them in ways where they tasted pretty good. These foods and recipes got passed on through the generations and they are still enjoyed today by black and white culture alike. We were kind of poor when I was growing up and sometimes a souse and mustard sandwich was about all we could afford to eat. Strange foods aren't limited to poverty level though. I once saw an episode of Ripley's Believe It or Not where in Japan it is a delicacy to take a live lobster, cut it's tail off, and slide the still living front portion aside while they flipped and prepared the raw tail. After they finished preparing the tail within a minute, they would then slide the living front portion of the lobster back up to the now prepared tail and serve it to the eager customer where they would then proceed to eat the live lobsters tail while the lobster squirmed around in horror. Yes, they actually showed this on TV. So let me enjoy my brains and eggs every once in awhile. :)

LOL, the cholesterol percentage is the best part of that. Shouldn't that be illegal? It's not a very big can either. It's says the serving size is 2/3 cup and there is one serving per can. That's basically the size of a small ice cream bowl. YIKES.
My dad bought a can of this as a joke some years ago. When he did, the woman at the checkout told him a story about an elderly gentleman that frequented the store who bought seven cans of the stuff weekly. Apparently he fried it up with eggs every single morning for breakfast.
I'd hate to see the insides of that guy's arteries. Ugh!

I admit that I'm awfully leery about this product, but logically it's pretty silly for a carnivore to be upset about eating brains just because they're brains. Intestines I could understand (given their use), but why are pig brains any worse than pig muscle?
Granted, the cholesterol is of some concern (though I believe there's some debate about how much effect dietary cholesterol actually has on blood cholesterol levels-- most of the HDL and LDL in your bloodstream is produced by your body directly, IIRC), and I'm a little disturbed by meat sold in cans.
My brother bought a can to pose with for a picture, and now it lurks threateningly in his kitchen.
