The heart shaped pizza at Papa Johns is the stupidest thing ever.

Notice it's thin crust only. The thin crusts at Papa Johns are not made in the store, they just come in a big bag full of crusts. To make a small or medium thin crust, they cut off the excess. To make a heart shaped pizza, they do the same.

They're not saving any money, they're just throwing food away. I guess they save a little bit of money on the toppings though.

I used to make pizzas at Papa John's and not once did I or anyone else there make any dough. We had trays of pre-made balls of dough in the walk-in.

Maybe it's changed since then (mid 90s), perhaps...

Really, since it looks like they're folding the dough directly, I think results are going to vary based on the people making the pizza at the individual papa johns.

@Trae: Yeah I work at Papa Johns, and our store offered this yesterday. It's basically a thin crust where we put a stencil of a heart on it and cut around it. Our stencil looked like a heart, not a fucked up pacman.(If they even used a stencil) It's definitely isolated.

@Trae: From the ad image, I kind of assumed they were making a pan pizza with a specially made heart-pan. That's the only way to get precise heart-shaped pizza results in a large scale. Of course, Papa Johns doesn't do pan pizzas.

What's amazing is how perfectly round the rest of the pizza is besides that 'dent'. They can clearly make a regular pizza, but they clearly didn't try very hard to fulfill the 'heart' aspect of this Love Pizza.

Yeah but the responsibility ultimately lies with papa johns to train their employees correctly on how to make it.

Even more basic than that is the manager of the store knowing he doesn't have a skilled enough crew to handle making the pizza and still offering it, and sending out pizzas that look like that.

A few years ago we had heart shaped pizza from Boston's and it was heart shaped but someone thought it would be keen to put cinnamon in the crust, yuck. A few years ago I called up our local Papa Johns and asked them to do this very thing. The manager loved the idea and did it, at no extra charge either.

The results were far better that those pictured here. For one thing, they cut it after it was cooked, giving me the remainder in another box; which worked for us since my wife doesn't like crust.

This however, reminds me of an old metal tractor seat (which are actually fairly comfortable).

The maker of that particular pizza just didn't shape the dough right. Either lazy or doesn't understand what shape a heart is in. And no, you don't get less pizza. It's the same amount of dough used in the round pizzas. The person making it just stretches and kneads it until it's in a heart shape.

Papa John's is one of the only major chains to hand toss the dough. That makes this a pretty risky idea since they are relying on line cooks to get the shape right.

(For the hand tossed style, dough balls arrive from a regional kitchen and then the store employees toss/slap the dough into a pizza shape. Thin crust pizza dough arrives pre-fab in the pizza shape.)

This pisses me off. Not the fact that it is a heart shaped pizza, but because the pizza in the photo was cut. Last night my girlfriend and I decided to order one because it looked interesting. She makes the order and we wait. Pizza dude finally shows up with too much stuff on the order and charges for it. Then we get to the pizza and we open it up. We chuckled. Then we realized the damn thing wasn't even sliced. Who the hell taught these people how to make pizza?

I used to be a pizza boy and there was no way in hell a pizza was getting out without getting sliced into hand-held pieces.

At least it tasted ok.

My wife tried to get Papa John's to send me a heart-shaped pizza as I was getting dressed on our wedding day. They refused to do so, even when she played the \"it's my special day as a bride\" card, claiming that it simply wasn't possible for them to create such a thing. Apparently even when they \"can\" create a heart-shaped pizza, they still aren't really able to.

What I find odd is that, despite the shape, the actual picture looks much more appetizing than the poorly Photoshopped photo in the advertisement.

If they used a mold to cook in, then it could potentially look as good as the picture. Similar to deep dish pans. however to cut dough in a heart shape then cook loosely it will always adjust itself during the bake time.

Since the time we were dating, my wife and I have bought a heart-shaped pizza from Papa Murphy's around Valentine's day. They put a lot more effort into the shape (which is an adjustment of the dough, not a removal). Plus the price is comparable to their standard pepperoni pizza. Years later, and it is something our kids look forward to.

Seeing this weak imitator makes me sad, and just adds another reason to avoid Papa John's.

It looks like their normal round pizza pushed in to create a dent. Papa John's is having a credibility problem lately. Their owner just got laughed at in the press for his radio interview in which he informed listeners of the unhealthy quality of Papa Johns' Pizza's.

I actually work at Papa Johns and the heart shaped pizzas are a pain in the ass. We have to cut bits off of the pre-made thin crusts in order to make the heart shape, also making the large into a medium size in the process.

Worse, the template we use to get just the right heart shape didn't ship to all of the stores until yesterday for a special that's been going on for two weeks and my bet is that the photo is from an attempt to freehand a heart. My best shot so far freehanding is a fairly respectable pac-man, so this is surprisingly good work.

I am tickled to see this because I made a heart-shaped pizza last night (Friday) for the husband and I. Herbed wheat crust topped with feta and sundried tomatoes, in case anyone cares. This Papa John's ad is what gave me the idea.

I used to work at a Papa John's and I made these. Total bullshit and a waste since thin crust pizzas should already be cheaper than the regular crust pizza, now you're going to cut out a slice and charge more? Bullshit

I am a current papa johns employee. First off the thin crusts are pre-made at the factory... that is all the time. For the valentine's day special we have a heart stencil in the store which we have to use to make the round thin crusts into hearts. That being said, we aren't making more money on less pizza because we can't do anything with the pieces we cut off. Secondly, we aren't ALLOWED to cut the pizza due to corporate orders, my guess is that they don't want us delivering a broken heart on valentine's day.

That is a bad picture actually, the customer must of special ordered it. If you read the add it says its a heart shaped THIN crust pizza and that picture is a hand tossed. So its either a special order gone bad or just a bad pizza that someone decided was to good to pass up and posted her to start something.
