Montel Williams should be held somewhat financially responsible for this. While I think the man will say or do ANYTHING for a buck and is useless, there are people who bought this assuming \"Montel Williams\" would not enforce a scam.


Since he has, he should be refunding their money.


The White House has recently been trying to get some control over Obama's image, which is in the \"public domain\" like other Presidents. This is why.

Speaking from an actor standpoint, I can tell you that for the most part, spokespeople don't actually get to use or test a product before they sign their contract. I did a commercial for a golf shoe that I've yet to see, for instance (the shoe, not the commercial). I don't know if they're pieces of crap or not, I just know I got my SAG pay that day.

If anything, Montel could sue the company for using his celebrity to promote such a scam. He shouldn't, because as already said, he lost all credibility by using his own show to promote Sylvia Browne, scammer extraordinaire; but he certainly could.

Anyway, pretty much all of the \"collector coins\" sold on TV are scams -- even the genuine semi-commemoratives (like the 50 state quarters) aren't as valuable as those dopes on the home shopping channels want you to believe.

Feh, even QVC (and similar) suck. I stopped by a special \"outlet\" store of theirs where you can actually buy TSC stuff live, in person. I ended up walking out. Everything looked like total junk and wasn't really priced to move.

There were very few others in the store. I think these places live on hype, and it's hard to generate hype over a physical product the people can touch without some over-excited person wearing a headset showing you the (very limited) ways it won't break. :D

If you claim you got scammed because Obama's image was not physically part of the coin, you lose. If it is just a sticker, maybe you can claim it should have been painted on.

He should find a bank that won't accept these coins, if you presented them \"Obama\" side up, the first reaction from the bank would be that they're fake. If he can do that, he can now prove they aren't legal tender. This ad offered legal tender US coins. A chargeback can then be filed based on the fact the coins cannot be spent in the US.

Of course, this hinges on finding a bank that is too lazy/busy to pull off the sticker.

I also figured the coin in the ad was digitally enhanced to look more photo realistic. The following is from their web site;

Now let's do the math, 5 sets at $19.95 each comes to $99.75. If we subtract 20% it comes to $79.80 not $89.95. But it gets even better. Ten sets at the regular price comes to $199.50. If you deduct the so-called 35% savings it should bring the price down to $129.68 not $179.95.

I wonder if target and Walmart are handling the math for this company?

My understanding of the law is that it rests on that second word - fraudulently. In other words, it's perfectly legal to deface, alter, or destroy a coin, as long as you aren't doing it in order to commit fraud - ie modify it to look like a higher-value coin.

That's why those machines at rest stops and tourist traps - the ones that take a penny and make it into a collectible souvenir - are legal - because nobody is going to mistake the flattened slug for legal tender.

@SabreDC: The key phrase in that law is \"fraudulently alters.\" The government doesn't want to prosecute people who (for example) drill a hole in a coin and make a necklace; they do want to prosecute when the defacement would defraud someone who received an altered coin as tender.

For example, back when the U.S. still used gold and silver in circulating coinage, fraudsters would clip the edges off coins, reducing their value. That's why coins have \"reeded\" edges now -- they make it easier to spot a clipped coin.

A weirder example of the opposite fraud: Once in the 1800s, the U.S. minted nickels that had a big roman numeral five, but didn't include the word \"cents\" anywhere on the coin. Con men were painting them gold and telling people the nickels were five dollar coins!

In as much as those stupid stickers don't purport to change the tender value of Obama coins, the law (as used so far) doesn't apply. Which, in this case, I agree sucks.

This company won't cancel an order that has been placed but not shipped yet. It sounds like they charge a grossly inflated shipping fee which they won't refund once the buyer returns the coins to them. So even if the coins are returned for a credit of the purchase price, the company still makes money off of a nonrefundable inflated shipping fee.

If I were this man, I would cancel my credit card/check card and get a new number. He should call his bank and tell him the card was lost. Then when this stupid \"US Mint\" goes to charge him for these as-yet-unshipped coins, they won't be able to put the charge through on his old number.

Simple solution.

Though I do like collecting coins, I don't like colorized old coins with new images. When I saw the commercials I couldn't imagine why you would want one if they aren't done by the government. Just my opinion. You don't let banks print their own money do you?

Not at all. I simply think that Obama is a sham who has a lot of people fooled into thinking he's more than what he really is. He's a self serving power hungry socialist and, not some savior that liberals think he is. I didn't like McCain either. He was a sellout and a fraud. His sedated campaign against Obama deserved to lose. What this country needed in last year's election was a real conservative. We didn't get one so, now we have to deal with 4 years of Obama's socialist policies that won't amount to anything but more misery in the end. I guess no one remembers Jimmy Carter huh? What a shame voters in this country have no sense of history. What a shame that voters in this country have no idea that what Obama is trying to do goes against the constitutional limitations placed upon the federal government. Those limitations are there for a reason -- to protect the liberty of the people. The problem is that most people don't understand those limitations or, their purpose so this slow erosion of our liberties will likely not even be noticed by the morons who keep voting for people like Obama. It is not within the power or responsibility of government to ensure the economic welfare of the country. To even attempt to do so means more problems. You cannot REDISTRIBUTE this much wealth without causing problems in the end. The people who are working and earning income and, paying taxes on that income will get the shaft while the people who are not working and earning income will be the only people who see benefits. Those benefits don't come without a price. The price will be more lost jobs and, a reduction of productivity over time. I hope all of you Obama voters are happy. You deserve the misery you're going to get.

Well, if you keep a set of the state quarters in pristine condition, they could be worth a heck of a lot in 100-200 years.

It's just a matter of time. Sure, there's a lot of them now, but how many pristine, perfect sets will there be in 300 years?

That's where the value comes from in coins.

@Jage: Probably quite a few. Anything that's manufactured and sold as 'collectible' is never destined to be really valuable, because people will, you know, collect them. And store them away in pristine condition. See also: beany babies, baseball cards.

But a lot of those are from an era where sports cards were considered \"junk\" and not collectables (along with funny books) and abused or just plain tossed out by your mother when you went off to school or the army. Outside of some inserts and stuff that was expensive to begin with, very little made in the last ~20 years will hold much value.

I went to montelwilliams.com, his personal web site where he shamelessly hawks other products. The phone numbers for customer care on his site are the same as those advertised on uscoinnetwork.com and obamacoincollection.com. I wouldn't be surprised if Montel is feverishly slapping more stickers on quarters before they run out.

the reason this marketing scheme works is the reason you bought 'x-ray' glasses from the back of a comic in the 50s and 60s. Real collectors know better and any one with a brain knows you really can't do a 4-color embossing on real metal. these people, their own way, unfortunately, are denying the re-de-pression the rest of us are in and hitting while the iron is hot. again, unfortunately, that's the american way for entrepreneurs. hopefully, the feds can get to them for defacing US money. but I'll bet their lawyers already have a defense for that. hopefully, it won't be 50 years before Obama is actually placed on the face of a coin, of course it may be the $5/coin or a new 75cents coin given the inflation/deflation which may be imminently happening
