While in the Bahamas recently, I had the pleasure of drinking soda with REAL SUGAR in it. Not only could you taste a difference, but it was miles better than what we get in the states.

Down here in New Zealand there's a brand called Royal Crown Draft Cola, and while it comes in a smaller bottle for the same price the quality of it is worth it as it actually contains Cane Sugar. Which they in fact point out in the ingrediants label. Also after recently drinking a lot of the Grapefruit and Cranberry sodas I just can't find the taste in Coke anymore and only drink it at fast food places.

@LakeeshaNobdobber: Why is sugar a big deal to Americans? I never quite understood this; as I have never tasted a HFCS drink in my life. Hell, I've only heard about it in US context.

Worth noting: All beverages tapped on glass bottles will taste better provided that the beverage does not taste better with added plastic. Glass does not \"leak\" its molecules the way that plastic does.

Oh people cried and begged for them to bring back the old coke.

So after being off the marker for a bit, they brought back Coke Classic. (Oh, well not exactly - they took away the sugar & put in high fructose corn syrup instead..... and since people lost the \"taste\" of it for a short bit, most never noticed the difference!

So now you know the true story of New Coke. (it was to trick the public in the switch from sugar to high fructose corn syrup)

@boomersix: I'm sure your friend's homebrew is cheaper than store-bought soda, but due to government subsidies for corn and tariffs on sugar, HFCS is a lot cheaper than the real stuff for manufacturers. Maybe if we could drop these outdated policies getting real sugar in a soft drink would be the norm rather than a novelty.

Sugar is not a bad thing, ElizabethD. We consumers have been told that sugar is bad because we consume too much of it. Consuming too much of anything is bad, but that doesn't mean the natural food itself is bad. Lab-created, unnatural \"foods\" like HCFS, however, ARE bad.

I can't wait to taste Pepsi \"throwback\" (sorry, but I hate that name- reminds me of \"backwash\") and see if it affects my desire for sweets or feelings of hunger differently.

@ElizabethD: it is good, compared to HFCS. Just because those scarecrows on the HFCS commercials can't bring up any talking points against HFCS doesn't mean the don't exist:

HFCS is similar to sugar and cheaper than sugar.

BUT:
1) HFCS causes you to feel like you are hungry
2) HFCS causes you to feel like you need sweets

so: HFCS, if used in moderation may be the same as sugar, but it has an addictive element to it that makes it not at all like sugar and more like low grade nicotine with out the lung/mouth/throat cancer side effects.

I think there are a lot more side effects the HFCS lobby doesn't want you to know about but those jump to the top of my list.

@snowburnt: Also, HFCS has further impacts (other than nutritionally) since it is derrived from corn. Growing corn (at least in the US) uses a ton of petro-chemicals to produce fertalizers, plus all the transport and further energy used in fractioning the corn into weird food-like items, such as HFCS. I remember seeing reports that there is more energy put into growing and moving the corn than we get out, calorie wise. (I don't have a source on that, though, so it might not actually be true.)

@AoE: yep, i can tell that it works differently by the way it raises my blood sugar faster than regular sugar. which is good when my sugar is crashing and i am headed toward insulin shock. but which is bad when i want to drink a coke at the movies without sending my blood sugar on an instant skyrocket.
and i just hate diet sodas. so to drink HFCS regular coca cola i have to take the insulin half an hour before i drink the soda.

Same here in Olympia, Washington. We call it 'CostCoke' on the grocery list. MUCH tastier than the regular. I don't think we have had a time yet when Costco didn't have it. And that would be, at minimum, 3 various local CostCos. So in our area, at least, you can count on them having it. There are also some gas station mini-marts around that offer the Mexico-version. No particular brand.. offhand, I can think of a texaco, an Arco, 3 Shells, and 2 AM\\PMs that offer the Mexican version sugared Coke.

Dammit. Now I am craving it. Thanks a lot.

@Rey: My guests here in Texas has the same reaction when I pull out some Dublin Dr Pepper (from there town named Dublin, which has the lone holdout DP plant that refused to switch to HFCS back when the rest of the company did and still uses the original Imperial Sugar). I can't drink regular DP anymore, and I can barely tolerate regular Coca-Cola as well.

Man, do I love H.E.B. for their vast amount of Mexican sodas on the soda aisle... they have MexiCoke as well as Jarritos (many flavors), Barrilitos (also many flavors), and my beloved, BELOVED Sidral Mundet. All made with sugar. All crazy delicious.

I think it depends on what region you live in. I know we get it like once a year at my store(in Illinois). I saw it once and it was like $25-30 a case and I was like that must be a mistake. Some guy filling up a flatbed with them. He told me it's not a mistake in the price and it's a steal because it's made with real sugar it tastes a million times better than regular coke and it's like $12 a six pack at jewel so he's stocking up.

@lars2112: Calories will be about the same. I have a 12-oz bottle of Mexicoke in the fridge here that says it's 150 calories. About.com lists 97 calories per 8oz for Coke Classic (so 145 kcal/can); and an HFCS Mexipepsi is 146 calories.

Yeah you can get Mexican Coke, Pepsi, Squirt, etc., from Mexico and Central and South America in many bodegas. And it's usually in bottles with the classic old logos, though I got a 10 oz. bottle of sugary coke with the misbegotten \"vomiting e\" New Coke logo recently.

They probably restock pretty often Are you saying there is a big warehouse of Mexican soda somewhere where all this old product comes from?

What's probably happening is that the bottles are being reused. They can be returned for a redemption value. The old bottles have the old logos on them but fresh product inside.

attention pepsico marketeers: naming a product frequently used by and targeted at kids should probably not have a name dangerously close to the word \"throwup\" in it.

But yeah, i'm psyched. when I do drink soda (which is 1 can a week, max) I'd like it to actually taste like i'm drinking something at least loosely based off of real foods. HFCS is like the Ryan Seacrest of the sweetner world- completely without personality or taste.

The problem is that there is inherently wrong with HFCS over sugar. Its just that since the govt subsidizes the production og HFCS it frees up manufacturers to dump too much of it into every product. The problem isnt that it's bad, the problem is that in a country with an obesity problem, the govt shouldn't be subsidizing what is essentially sugar, making it cheap for everyone to gorge themselves.

@SanskritiCachanilla: While it's true that it's mainly bad because of the subsidies, it's also bad because it is not natural, likely causes obesity (more so than sugar), has been shown to contain mercury, and it doesn't even taste good. :-)

Good, hopefully it tastes like Mountain Dew did 4-5 years ago when i loved it (can barely drink it now), when they changed their can the last before the newest iteration that just came out they claimed \"New View Same Dew\" But it didnt taste the same. Now bring back the classic Doritos recipe (it changed about the same time as Dew) and my life will be complete.

@shepd: Trust me im not alone in this, the pop machine at work still had the old cans and me and my boss did a blind taste test, the soda was different. I wish i wouldve remembered to compare the labels, dont know why i didnt think of that back in the day.

This really interests me. I've been curious about soda with real sugar since reading about the New Coke fiasco. I found a Dr. Pepper bottling company in Texas that makes their stuff with real sugar and ships it out, but the price is too expensive for soda. Now I can just wait for this.

@Brain.wav: Have you tried Hansen's Cane Soda recently? It's about $.50 a can, but they have a really good Mandarin Lime, and their Root Beer is one of the best I've tasted. Mango Orange is pretty good, as is their Vanilla Cola, but stay away from the Pomegranite, and Key Lime Twist.

@Brain.wav: Keep in mind Jones uses \"Inverted Cane Sugar\", which goes through the same process as HFCS to create. They just use cane sugar in the beginning instead of corn. It tastes better, but I would imagine there isn't much difference otherwise.

After I realized this I pretty much stopped buying Jones Soda, since I feel like their branding of \"PURE CANE SODA\" is a lie. I would hardly call chemically processed cane sugar \"pure\".

I'm usually a coke drinker, but this will definitely have me buying boxes of this stuff once it comes out! I really wish coke would release a sugar-only version of their product here in the US. When I was in Nepal, the coke they had was all pure sugar and distilled water. The drink tasted incredible!

I've never really understood the animosity toward HFCS. It's just sugar from corn. Sure, it looks different in its raw form, but the reason it's so much more popular in the US as a sweeter is because - gasp! - corn is a much more accessible, affordable, and common crop in the United States than cane sugar, the majority of which has to be imported. People just keep looking for ingredients to blame for their obesity and health problems, rather than their own immaturity, greed, and lack of self control.

dude - you got it all wrong. while true that the US govt subsidizes CORN GROWERS, the govt does NOT subsidize the production of HFCS. (corn is used in most of the world's food supply, for goodness sakes.)the other hidden gem is that the US govt protects US cane sugar prices (and their growers) with subsidies AND price supports, hence cane sugar will always be higher in the US than world market cane sugar prices or HFCS.

@shifuimam: The taste, and the fact that it's NOT just about the ingredient price: many processed food manufacturers use HFCS in foods that they otherwise wouldn't because it has a preservative effect, increasing shelf life.

Also, there is a new study claiming that for overweight individuals, fructose increases triglyceride levels after a meal more than glucose does. I don't know enough about the area to know what the scientific consensus on that is, but it seems that it's at least possible that there may be different metabolic effects. Of course, that wouldn't be limited to HFCS, but it would call into question the idea that there is \"no metabolic difference\" between it and regular corn syrup, which has been the line of the Corn Refiner's Association.

@shifuimam: True, most people in the US are obese not from HFCS but from many factors. That said, HFCS is REALLY BAD for your body. Because it's not naturally occurring, your body looks at it, doesn't know what to do with it, freaks out, and stores it as fat, all while causing your blood sugar to spike. Too much HFCS can lead to diabetes, and obesity.

@aedude01: uh, too much sugar can lead to diabetes and obesity. Too much naturally-occurring sugars in fruit can lead to diabetes and obesity. So can too much McDonald's, too much fat, and too much grease. To say that HFCS is worse for you because it's not naturally-occurring seems to be a cop-out to me. You might say that obesity and diabetes are caused by HFCS consumption, but that line can only be drawn because HFCS is used far more frequently than sugar in processed food products. I highly doubt that using cane sugar in the thousands of products containing HFCS would suddenly make that food healthier or better for you. A ho-ho is a ho-ho, regardless of where the sugar in its chocolate cake layers and creamy filling came from.

People eat unnatural, processed food in enormous quantities compared to the amount of natural, unprocessed food consumed. If we ate organic chicken and fresh vegetables in a quantity comparable to the amount of McDonald's the average American shoves down their gullet every year, I would imagine we'd still have an obesity problem.

I'm not seeing any evidence that HFCS has a significantly different impact on human physiology than any other sugar product. Drinking 64 oz of sugar-sweetened Pepsi instead of HFCS-sweetened isn't going to magically be healthier for you on any level. You're still consuming loads of sugar and empty calories, and the end health result is going to be the same.

There is still the matter of tooth decay and the fact that sugar in the quantities found in a soda are hell for your health. Regular table sugar is 50/50 fructose/glucose, the only different between HFCS and table sugar is a possible tip of 65/45 fructose/glucose. It would be even better if it was made with straight corn syrup (mainly glucose). Less fatty liver disease, the carbs are readily used by the whole body, etc. Still there's that dreadful tooth decay. Brush your teeth!

@johnva: You know that disgusting feeling is actually the extreme erosion to your tooth enamel caused by various elements of the soda right...

I had a friend who worked in a theatre, and he refused to drink soda because he said they used it to clean the popcorn machines. Apparently it cleans out all that sticky butter from the microscopic pores of the metal. Yikes! (Not sure how true that is.)

Me to, it taste loads better, and satisfies the urge to drink just one can. For some reason soda sweetened with HFCS I drink nearly non-stop, however real sugar, I only drink 1 bottle, and my thirst has been quenched, and then I go onto water or milk. I've started losing weight since switching all the soda in the house, as have the other people in the house with the pallets of Soda I bring back from Canada. They also don't seem to drink it non stop also.

Anyone avoiding soda because of the HFCS should also take a look at everything else they buy. I realized the other day that the BREAD I had bought had HFCS in it. I look at the ingredient labels for everything now.

@odhen: I actually look first at the ingredients in the products I buy nowadays, and the nutrition labels, before I even check out the price. And if it's usually a buck or less more, I'll typically go with what's better for the body. It all works out in the long run since I don't go eat out as much since I have food at home. :)

I have to wonder whether this practice is adding needless calories to everything...using sugar as a preservative seems like it would.

Best way to avoid it is to a) read the labels of everything, like you said, and b) cook your own food from raw staple ingredients most of the time. The latter is a good idea for many reasons beyond just HFCS.

There are plenty of sodas that use sugar instead of HFCS. You just have to give a look around, Jones soda is one, and it gets served on Alaska and Horizon flights. Also Whole Foods brand sodas use sugar.

When me and my family immigrated to the USA, we noticed its not all it was cracked up to be....

I came from a former soviet state, where there were no local private businesses, and any private businesses were usually from overseas, such as the USA.

Here are a few example.
Europe
The first pizza hut I went to was basically a 2 floor restaurant with the smoking section in the basement and non-smoking up top. There was a full bar, with alcohol. There were waiters bussing the wrought iron tables and there were tables outside, on the street, as any such cafe. The menu obviously contained pizza. This was housed in a historic building that was about 300 years old (older than the USA).

USA
A rundown and dark brick shack, it was a real HUT, with a plastic red roof. The tables were wooden and creaky and dirty. The booths against the walls were PLASTIC. The establishment had NO windows. There were 2 beaners making pizza.

McDonalds
Europe
Granite countertops, beer. Iron tables. Salad bar. Marble tiles on the floor. They also sold pizza and hotdogs, italian ice, and italian soda. The burgers were served on bread that was made with yeast. It actually looked like the burgers in the commercials...shocking !!

USA
Semi run down joint, plastic counter top. Plastic tables, plastic booths and plastic chairs that you could not move. Slack-jawed beaners and negroes. It was recently shut down for failing health inspections. The burgers were made on the cheap with baking-soda bread...

Pepsi/Coca Cola
It contained sugar, it was always Ice cold served to you in a cold glass bottle thats also frosted. If you were at a restaurant, you got a glass. You could buy 6 packs at some stores.

USA
Plastic containers with cheap labels, HFCS...nuff said.

The only businesses that I have seed that had the same quality was subway. The only difference was that the bread was smaller.

My local supermarket was bought by the piggly wiggly and they are changing it cosmetically.

The sode is actually becoming real soda once more.

Maybe they'll clean up the fast food places...

@jmndos: wow, where in europe did you get soda served ice cold? i had trouble in the netherlands and belgium finding some that wasn't room temperature. beer and bottled water the same way. it didn't bother me but i noticed the difference. i only got ice cold soda in the bruxelles marriott hotel, which was also the only one with ice machines

HFCS is a terrible substitute for sugar and I'm glad the cola companies are looking at this seriously, even if it's only a niche limited time product. Niche products are how we wound up with diet soda drinks, cherry coke, and similar successes.

When I got off soda with HFCS I lost five pounds, so I looked for it in all of my foods. Bread, cereal, pudding, crackers (saltines), apple juice the list goes on and on. So I made a point to find foods without the HFCS and I lost another ten pounds. I wasn't being much more active than I was before but the body processes HFCS differently than regular sugar.
Did everyone see the article about traces of mercury being found in HFCS. Even if it is traces if people consume enough of it the traces build up, and mercury is deadly poisonous to humans....or didn't the soda makers know that. It's about time they catch on. I hope Dr. Pepper comes out with a sugar version (I know about the Dublin variety).

HFCS tends to add a \"warm thick taste\" cause it's a syrup. Real sugar doesn't do this giving the soda a more crisp, cold taste.

If I hadn't given up pop a few years ago I'd be all over this. I still drink the mexican stuff once in a while because sometimes I just want some orange soda (or lime, or tamarind, or strawberry), but mostly it's all too sweet for my taste buds now. :(

you can get Coke in bottles at Costco thats brought in from mexico (I am in oregon). its sweetened with sugar and you end up with a bunch of sweet bottles too. i think its 24 bottles for like $21 or somethin

I stopped eating HFCS 9 years ago when I was a morbidly obese teenager. Lost 160 pounds, but obviously not just from HFCS.

I know there have been a ton of people saying that Diet sodas can make you gain weight as well... I haven't seen that. I've been drinking around 6 cans a day for 9 years and have lost and kept my weight off. Of course, I will probably die of some neurological disorder associated with the sweetener but oh well.

I have no sympathy for the obese that ask me what they shouldn't be eating, then say, \"Well, I have to have my Coke. I can't stand that diety aftertaste.\"

I've met quite a lot of people that have no problem admitting to me that they would rather be dangerously obese than stomach a diety aftertaste. (Or you know, forego soda altogether and drink regular water, like our species was intended to do.)

And yes HFCS is in EVERYTHING. It is extremely hard to stay away from at this point. You should also be checking labels for partially hydrogenated oils, or trans-fats, which are also in everything, even though the labels so proudly exclaim \"O GRAMS TRANS FAT!\" It's still in it, just in under the count.

Cane sugar is definitely the way to go. While for the most part I'm content to put up with the HFCS, every now and then I'll pick up a half dozen Jones ([www.jonessoda.com]) which is probably the best cane-sugar sweetened cola I've ever had. As soon as Pepsi releases these, I'll be making the switch, regardless of the higher price.

Awesome...Canadian Coke and Passover Coke (no, I'm serious) are flavoured with real honest-to-goodness sugar. Not only do sodas taste better with real sugar, they have less calories than the ones sweetened with corn syrup.

Alton Brown is plugging the theory that Baby Boomers have created the huge hot sauce market because their tastebuds are essentially wearing out. Bullsh*t. Boomers are the last generation to remember what food tasted like when it had a normal amount of fat in it. Pork used to be excellent when I was growing up. Now it's so damn lean it's like eating a rubber shoe. Hamburger used to be really good everywhere but now you have to grind your own and add additional fat to make it not taste like a hockey puck. Turn out transfats are worse for you that saturated fat. Same thing with sweetening things with real sugar. Imagine if Hostess started using real sugar again. Oh, the glory days of yesteryear.

Last year during Passover, my sister and I did a side-by-side comparison of kosher Coke and Mexican Coke. Both were sweetened by non-HFCS sugar. Believe it or not, they tasted quite different from each other, though both were FAR better than regular Coke. The kosher Coke was fantastic, and the cane sugar really brought out the spiciness. I can't wait for Passover again this year.

I'm excited about Pepsi Throwback. Since cane sugar isn't as sweet tasting as HFCS, the taste of the syrup will come through rather than the mouth-numbing corn sugar. I don't drink a lot of soda. I like to save it as an occasional treat. That's why I can't wait for my favorite sodas with real sugar in them.

But yeah... Dublin Dr. Pepper is real sugar as well... you see that stuff sold a lot in the Metroplex, and I hear it's worth it (not a big Dr. Pepper fan myself, so I never really tried it).

Mexican coke always scared me because of the water :P
But I have heard it's really good, might have to brave it and try it.
(I am sure the water is fine, it's just the mental connection.)

Interesting to see Pepsi's reaction when the Throwback's sales match or exceed those of regular Pepsi. So many people are anti-HFCS now that there's a huge market for this. Maybe it'll actually bring about big change in the industry, now that a major manufacturer/band is switching back to sugar. I can only hope, as I like Pepsi more than a lot of the natural sugar sodas Ive been buying lately.

I remember a few years back when West Maui shut down its sugar cane operations for good. People were happy the smokey plant was gone and the land was going to be developed and exploited for the real estate boom. Im taking a wild guess that they're all wishing they hadnt put all their eggs in the real estate basket and still had a real industry to support them in difficult times like these.

The Farm Fresh supermarket chain in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia has been selling glass bottle sugar sodas for about a year now. They have stuff like Sunkist, RC Cola, a few of the Nehi soda flavors, Coke (I think) and Cheerwine (awesome soda). It's 10 for $10, so I figure it's a good deal.

The difference between HFCS and cane sugar sodas is astounding. Sugar tastes better and it just leaves you with a full feeling when you finish one. I hope some of the other soda makers start to mainstream this stuff and just kill the HFCS market by demand for the Throwbacks.

I live in Texas, a couple hours from the Dr. Pepper plant (Dublin), where you can still get Dr.Pepper with real sugar. Apparently in that area, no one will even touch the other stuff, and it costs the same as regular Dr. Pepper. Since I'm a couple of hours away you do pay the premium to buy the old-fashioned bottles of 'Dublin Dr.Pepper' (I can only get it from Central Market) but I do treat myself occasionally - it's delicious!

I stopped drinking sugared sodas years ago when I switched to Diet, and every time I tried one after that I wondered why they tasted like garbage. I'd love to see if it isn't simply the HFCS. I'll be trying one when they come out.

I should note that Mountain Dew with real sugar has been available for over 2 years here in Knoxville, TN. It was invented here, so I dunno if that's the reason for that, or what, but it's sold in glass bottles, and as far as I can tell, the only place that carries them is Mast General Store on Gay Street. Also, they are delicious. They also have all the RC brand sodas with real sugar, RC Cola, Cheerwine, 7up, and the like. Most notably, they have grape, orange, and peach Nehi, which, if you've never had it, be forewarned, the unnatural love that you will undoubtably develop for it may get you arrested. Be careful.
