This is sad.
In 2007 this paper had a daily circulation around 350,000, 18th out of the 100 top US newspapers. For scale, The Seattle P-I was number 78, with a daily circ around 130,000, and it's about to go under, too.

Sadly, the newspaper industry will be the next to meltdown.

Just off my own experience, a bunch of coworkers got laid off (my paper's outsourcing production, but a few other reporters and ad reps got the boot), a couple of competing papers were about six seconds away from getting shut down until someone snapped them up, the biggest paper in the state's a Tribune one (Hartford Courant), a bunch of other big daily papers here are Journal Register Company-owned (like those two that almost went tits-up), including the second-biggest one in the state...
I'm a member of the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance, and just seeing the number of members who had quit, been fired or laid off of their jobs is just demoralizing. Nothing like knowing your livelihood's a dying industry.

It's the first of many, I'm afraid. The Boston Globe is trying to get 50 of its newsroom staff to take a buy out, and if that fails, layoffs will ensue, again.

While I prefer the Pioneer Press to the Strib, it's sad to see it go. I really like newspapers. :(
