It's difficult to do when you're grocery shopping, and you're busy and you just want to get out of there. I make a habit out of it, but stuff like this pisses me off. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing Supermarket Sleuth, and I have to stay one step ahead of every manufacturer on earth, lest I fall prey to this kind of thing. It gets old after awhile, when they're clearly trying to trip you up every step of the way. Where does it end?

How about using SKIM MILK in Go Bananas? I didn't realize you needed milk to add a banana taste. They really should make that a higher emphasis on the label, especially because there are a lot of lactose intolerant people, like myself, that may have tried it and not known it can cause extreme stomach pain. And don't forget the people with milk allergies too.

Snapple always was, and always will be, waaaaaaaaaay too sweet. Personally, I don't have a vendetta against HFCS - I avoid it because everything that includes it uses TOO MUCH. There are very few bottled drinks that have less than 36 grams of sugar (HFCS) per serving. Honest Tea is one of the few, but it's like $2 a bottle. I'd drink snapple if they'd halve the amount of HFCS they use. but then again, it would probably reveal what we knew all along - that without all the sweet it basically tastes like sewer water.

@TVarmy: All food items masquerading as medicines have this problem. Fiber is good for you. Causes some things to be digested more slowly. Causes other things to not be digested as much. Lets you avoid getting colon problems. You get the picture.

How much fiber? Who knows. Probably diet dependent. Same thing goes for everything else. For fiber, we've got a pretty good idea of how much you'd need in a day for a happy bunghole. To do the magical things suggested by research? No idea. Many things are stored, so it doesn't matter if you get 20% of the recommended amount today and 180% of it tomorrow.

For whatever magical stuff Acai does, we've got far less data. Especially compared to other similar composition berries.

Acai berries decay too quickly to be transported. Thus, they are sent to the repeatedly-scammed dieters of America as freeze-dried powder or frozen berries and therefore the pulp is expensive.

You are already so morally corrupt as to try and insist flavored sugar water is good for you. There is no documented recommend allotment of acai berries to get benefits. Adding a scoop of freeze-dried powder to a vat of pear juice is just another step down the slippery slope and is pretty much a long and distinguished tradition at this point, just with different ingredients each time.

The unnaturally high amount of fructose screws with your insulin levels. It makes you fat, because your body can't store much fructose, and to get your blood sugar level down, the body converts the fructose to fat.

That it's subsidized by taxpayers.

That it appears from studies that it promotes increases in body fat more than regular cane sugar, probably because of the above.

That it's in almost every food product, so it's difficult to have it moderation, unless you eat only raw foods.

@BurnZ_: Health issues aside, it's subsidized by US tax dollars while the rest of the world enjoys cheaper and better tasting sugar. If we lifted the embargo on Cuba and imported their sugar, it would cost less to use that than HFCS. Ignoring Cuba, We tariff the heck out of sugar to keep the corn artificially cheaper. We also give federal tax dollars to corn growers to supplement their income, artificially increasing the corn supply above demand. It gives the farmers unnatural incentive to grow corn instead of crops that would be more environmentally friendly or provide more nutrients to lower-income families. Growing the extra corn lowers supply and increases the price of non-corn crops.

It's a berry from South America. Sort of looks like an unripe coffee bean.

It's supposed to contain ungodly amounts of anti-oxidants, and is the latest fad in health juice drinks.

This reminds me of the gingerbread mix I bought that didn't have ginger listed as an ingredient.

I wrote the company, and they claimed that the ginger was under \"natural ingredients\"... pretty low on the list.

Snapple's branding grip on the soft drink market is fascinating. I remember when they were local and they used real ingredients and real sugar (no HFCS) and it was great! Nowadays, it's just all fruit punch with HFCS.

Nantucket Nectars is still better. But it's sad that when I go to the pizza place to get a slice every damned drink has HFCS and fake flavors... Seltzer for me, please.

In general, many companies which produce juice cocktails for the mass market (even those marked pomegranate, acai, or blueberry) will use pear or apple juice as sweeteners and their predominant ingredients. The cheaper apple/pear juice is heated until all the flavor volatiles have been lost; this gives juice makers a sweetened \"blank slate\" to which they can add flavors. Reasons for this include an attempt to keep the price of their product down and to increase consumer acceptance. Like it or not, if companies were to use 100% cranberry juice, 100% blueberry juice, etc., their ingredient costs would rise, and this expense would be passed along to the consumer. Also, these fruit juices (acai, blueberry, cranberry, etc.) by themselves tend to be too astringent, too tart, and not sweet enough to appeal to most consumers.

Simple. Don't buy any \"juice\" that is labelled as a \"drink\".


This is like anything with a \"chocolatey coating\". Doesn't have to have real chocolate in it.


Avoid \"y\" suffixes: cheesy, fruity, etc.

Am I imagining things, or did Snapple actually used to be ...juice? I was never big into Snapple. I occasionally buy a diet peach tea, because the bottles are really durable. Otherwise, I rarely drank it back before it got hugely popular.

But I remember a couple other beverages I used to like went to hell:

Hansens ...was it \"nectar\"? Anyhow, back circa 1999 or so, it was either all, or nearly all, juice, and came in cans. Then ~2002, they changed to bottles, and it was mostly corn syrup. It was a completely different beverage sold under the same name, and utterly inferior in every way.

Koala. Used to be this carbonated mostly-juice beverage. Last I saw it, it was basically just fruit-flavored soda.

Is there any beverage company left with any integrity at all?

I used to drink Snapple tea all the time, but after they got bought out they changed all the formulas and it became just yet another overly sweet HFCS company. I wrote to them to complain and got an envelope with some pretty nice coupons for about $12 in Snapples completely free. I put the coupons in the drawer for a few months as I considered the proposition of free Snapple, then threw them away.

I honestly could care less about all the antioxident marketing garbage, I just think (real) Acai juices are delicious. If you have a Whole Foods nearby chances are they'll have some.

Anything that says \"drink\" isn't about \"juice\" (hence the adding of the word \"drink\"). The label isn't lying. The ingredients list is right there for anyone to read. I don't see how this is a story.

There's plenty of junk food out there and accompanying junk drinks. Are they worthy of noting on this site?

HFC is bad because it blocks a mechanism in your digestive process that tells you that you're full. So you eat or drink more of the product with HFC. It is to food what nicotine is to cigarettes. It makes you want MORE. And more means you get fatter and fatter and fatter. And that leads to illness, which leads to higher healthcare costs, etc. High Fructose Corn Syrup is BAD.
