that should be one-star <i>rating</i>, not one-star <i>review</i>...the rating is the aggregate of all the reviews this dentist has received, whereas \"one-star review\" makes it sound as if the Unless they had an issue they wanted clarified or had something to sort out, then I don't think talking to the dentist can always solve things.</p><p>We had a horrible experience with a peds dentist and I did post about it online. I don't feel like I needed to contact him since it was clear the situation was a mess. I don't contact every restaurant that gave me bad service before posting a negative review. Tried to avoid work like a disease.   We had to wait fifteen minutes with empty plates and had to ask the busboy if she was still working, and he had to find her.</p><p>She got an INSTANT bad review, and that's from a voice that actually counts!</p><p>Now, if I was reviewing the restaurant personally, such as for Zagats or the like, her action would have reflected in my review, and it would have been a poor review, publicly published... Suing is about collecting money, plain and simple.  Anyone who claims otherwise is misusing the civil court system, which is only about money.</p><p>The lawyer for the plaintiff is claiming libel, even though they are admitting that mercury was used in the fillings.  OK, so both the defendant and plaintiff agree that mercury was involved.  In that case, the defendant stating that fact is not libel - it's simply a statement of fact.  Libel is intended to prevent *untrue* statements from being presented as fact. You can get a lawyer to sue for anything, if you look hard enough......and i work for them!  lol.  The ones I work for wouldn't do this, but there are some lawyers, usually the young ones that don't get into a firm and have to hang a shingle, or older, slimier ones that are only looking to make money.  I think it would be interesting to know if the lawyer that filed this suit is working on an hourly base or a contingency fee.  I'm almost willing to bet money that it's an hourly fee.  So, what does he/she care if they win or not, they get their fees either way.</p><p>Of course, that type of lawyer is always taking a risk, because it is against the professional code of conduct to file \"frivolous\" lawsuits. The clients don't seem too reasonable either.</p><p>They all deserve each other. You can be sued for just about anything. The whole question is whether it'll get thrown out of court or not. It has also been determined that the amount of mercury in a filling would not be enough to adversely affect a person.</p><p>So, on top of the parents being morons, or choosing the cheapest option, then being upset. The dentist is also a moron for thinking that they can sue a person for being upset by what they agreed to.</p><p>Happens every day of the year. There is no reason to sue someone about it though.</p><p>Dentists give you options, its your choice. Just don't bash the dentist after the fact. I am sure they also offer an option of an injection, topical or the laughing gas. Some people just don't want a needle. Sometimes kids HAVE to be sedated to have dental work done, for their own safety.</p><p>Most fillings contain trace amounts of mercury. Many dentists question their safety during a sales pitch to sell people the more expensive \"mercury free\" options, even though it's well established that the regular ones are just fine. If you want to pay more for those, it's a free country. But the regular ones are fine.</p><p>There is sometimes more mercury in local drinking water than a person would be exposed to with dental fillings. All it takes is for one thermometer to break to pollute a whole lake. Avoid her like a disease!</p><p>My son went there for two years. She treated two cavities plus the usual cleaning. She was fast, I mean really fast. I won't necessarily say that is a bad thing, but my son was light headed for several hours after the filling. So we decided to try another dentist after half a year.</p><p>I wish I had gone there earlier. First, the new dentist discovered seven cavities. All right all of those appeared during the last half a year. Second, he would never use the laughing gas on kids, which was the cause for my son's dizziness. To apply laughing gas is the easiest to the dentist. There is no waiting, no needles. But it is general anesthetic, not local. And general anesthetic harms a kid's nerve system. Heck, it harms mine too. Third, the filling Yvonne Wong used is metallic silver color. The new dentist would only use the newer, white color filling. Why does the color matter? Here is the part that made me really, really angry. The color tells the material being used. The metallic filling, called silver amalgams, has a small trace of mercury in it. The newer composite filling, while costing the dentist more, does not. In addition, it uses a newer technology to embed fluoride to clean the teeth for you.</p><p>I regret ever going to her office.</p><p>P.S. Just want to add one more thing. The statements made by the patient's mom are obviously true (they even have a waiver stating as much) but were presented in such a way that it could be damaging to the dentist's business. I have no clue what the laws are in their area, but defamation laws frequently have clause for \"damaging\" statements.</p><p>That aside, what dentist still uses amalgam fillings exclusively anymore? I haven't been to a dentist that used them in years. And how stupid do you have to be to not realize that your kid's going to be dizzy after being given a gas that's used as a numbing agent? The vast majority of these cases are not well founded and only serve to exacerbate overall health-care costs and defensive medicine paranoia. The vast majority of healthcare professionals aren't money-grubbing quacks, despite what the modern media and attorneys want you to believe.</p><br /><p>Believe it or not...most of us want to just help people. You don't go through uh...fer example....14 years of training for the fun of it.</p><br /><p>Having said that, jamming gobs of Hg into the kid's mouth is probably sketchy at best, but I am not a dentist, so I don't know what the modern amalgams are composed of.</p><br /><p>It's interesting how a patient can smear a physician, or anyone can defame anyone else online these days, with little repercussion. A difference in doctor's prerogatives/philosophies in their methods of practice. If I had to take an educated guess, I would say that the new dentist convinced the patient that his/her way was better than the old dentist.</p><p>It is not uncommon for doctors to have differences in opinions about what is best when it comes to treatment and some doctors are very vocal about it. A single bad review - for any reason whatsoever - can overwhelm a lot of good customer experiences.  What it forces a small business to do is spend inordinate amount of time managing these reviews at the expense of managing a business.  But maybe it will all work itself out.  I use Yelp for restaurant reviews but I've learned over time to ignore the 1-star reviews. Most people who have posted their replies and opinions apparently love these articles and can't wait to jump on the bandwagon without first doing some fact checking.  If you read the REAL story, Dr. Wong is suing her patients for libel because her patients claimed that the dentist never told them about the mercury content in the fillings, when in fact the patients actually SIGNED the Informed Consent in their chart stating that the Dr. indeed had revealed the fact that the silver filling does contain mercury.  THAT IS LIBEL.  With that said, I think it's a horrible decision to pursue a lawsuit over this.  That's just a poor business decision.  Even if she gets a nice settlement or wins the lawsuit (it'll NEVER go to court), no amount of money can clean up the negative publicity she will suffer over this mess.  I think the sensible solution is to have the patients admit that they had lied on their review on Yelp, apologize, and have Dr. Wong drop the lawsuit.  This way the only people remaining upset would be her lawyer, boohoo.</p><p>By the way, big ups to \"Carey\" for living up to my expectations on how manipulative and irresponsible media is these days. This dentist fixed their child's teeth up professionally, and they buy into some idiotic mercury scare and nonsense about the kid being high on laughing gas and try to ruin the dentist's business.</p><p>The amount of mercury in fillings is small and perfectly safe, as every health body in the US will attest to.
