I haven't regretted it one bit.</p><p>I, myself, have way too many issues with Comcast to tolerate dealing with them any longer.</p><p>Issues:</p><p>- My first call to them, I spent over an hour arguing with the rep that it wasn't my firewall as NOTHING could connect even with all firewalls disabled. Turned out, like I thought, it was on their end.</p><p>- When I got Comcast at my current place I constantly lost internet past midnight. If it wasn't completely dropped, it was unreasonably slow.</p><p>- When I lost all my services (TV, Internet and Phone) one day, I was transferred back and forth between billing and tech. Because, for some reason, they said they didn't know why the other department would transfer me to their department.</p><p>- During the same call, we finally got the cable TV working somewhat. Not all the channels would work. After that was fixed, Tech said that my internet won't work unless I had dial-tone on my phone. Which I found absurd being that my phone is connected through their cable modem.</p><p>- I was somehow paying $200/mth for their Triple Play package they advertised for $99/mth. I know that there are surcharges and what not, but I know that I shouldn't be paying double the advertised price. Somehow, no one could explain why.</p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(10279380, 'Das Kommunist')\">Reply</a></div> <!-- if it's a top level category ' --> <div class=\"num-replies\">5 replies</div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (top level parent) --> <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"reply-container\" > <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-10286358\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=541151\"><img src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-541151-100x100.png\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=541151\">twritersf</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/01/comcast-charges-hurricane-victim-2495-for-calling-customer-service.html#comment-10286358\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-01-25T08:45:24-05:00\">January 25, 2009 8:45 AM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(10286358);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=10286358');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>@<a href=\"#c10279380\" rel=\"nofollow\">Red Dawn</a>: I thought about swithing from Comcast to AT&amp;T myself when I bought my condo. As I am self-employed, I work from home, so I'm generally able to watch the shows I want; if not, the DVR they provide pretty much takes care of the issues of unavailability.</p><p>I did a lot of research with UVerse. I had AT&amp;T DSL for a period of time between having Comcast and Insight and it was a wretched service.</p><p>Uverse rocks because it has TV Japan(I love NHK) and other international channels. The HD channels for me are superb in quality compared to Comcast. Also, I've yet to have an issue with my internet. Not once have I stated that I yelled at them or had an attitude.</p><p>I was arguing after the fact that he repeatedly told me it was my firewall after I repeatedly told him it was disabled. I've spent a majority of my life working as a network admin/engineer. I explained to him what I've done and even followed his advice just to make him happy. I had a non-routable IP address and he would blame my firewall or uncompatible hardware or software. Even when I told him the modem was not syncing he still proceeded to blame my firewall. I spoke to his supervisor who apologized profusely and even admitted that my modem was not bound to the network and that was why my IP address wasn't valid. Which was what I had stated to him at the very beginning of my call.</p><p>There is no network traffic other than my attempts to surf. So scaling back anything didn't matter. I have MAC Binding and WPA setup so there was no one unauthorized whatsoever on my network. I check that all the time to be sure. I am fully aware of Comcast policies regarding bandwidth.</p><p>I didn't agree to be transferred. They would do it before anything could really be said. And when I would speak up it was always the other departments fault. I did not know whether it was a billing or tech issue. Never did I state that I knew what the cause of that issue was.</p><p>He specifically stated that my internet won't work unless I have a dial tone present and that my phone service is what allows the internet to function. He may have been new, I don't know but it sounds like he didn't pay much attention in training or got his connection types mixed up.</p><p>I've worked in customer service and I've ALWAYS been polite. So don't assume it was my attitude. I know how to treat customer service as I have been in the same position. I treat them with respect, but I'm firm in my statements. I don't like to be toyed around with, because I know how some agents are.</p><p>But just because you are \"tech support\" for an ISP does not connotate that you are superior to the customer. That's the number one thing that absolutely irritates me.</p><p>What you and TaterTom seem to think is all those issues were in a single call. That's just a few of DOZENS of calls in a four year period.</p><p>That call where it ended up with a supervisor was like this:<br />-I called and he does his opening.</p><p>-I tell him that I have issue connecting and when I check my IP address in IP config and even through our router, it shows a non-routing IP address. (Not 169.254.x.x but an IP address table that all ISP's use to prevent internet access.) I also explain that the modem seems to go in and out of sync every few seconds. When it does sync, it routes to a Comcast setup page.</p><p>-He says he can help me and asked if there were any changes to my setup. I told him no. I even explained that it is an issue on Comcasts end because I've seen this before and I explain that my MAC address to my modem probably isn't bound to the network. I told him all the steps I've gone through to verify.</p><p>-He wants to go through troubleshooting steps, I agree just so he can document that we went through these steps, although his troubleshooting steps were the exact steps I had taken before hand.</p><p>-He tells me that it is my firewall on my PC. I explain to him that a software firewall on my PC would not cause a sync issue with hardware. He tells me that it does cause that. I again disagree and tell him that my firewall would have to be filtering data before it connects to the modem for that to even possibly work.</p><p>-I disconnect my router and connect the modem directly to my PC just to take it out of the equation. Same IP address. He again says it is my firewall. (I have no firewalls other than my router firewall at this time.) I told him that at this point I have absolutely no firewall installed or present in the setup. He still says that I haven't disabled a firewall.</p><p>-He asks if I have another PC. I connect to the new PC, powercycle all the equipment. Same IP. He again blames a firewall. (Here's a little secret, no firewall installed on this PC whatsoever) I tell him again, no firewall is installed.</p><p>-I try with just my XBox. SAME IP. Again, he blames a firewall. (Odd, because MS doesn't have firewalls on their consoles. I tell him that.)</p><p>-He tells me that it must be my drivers or software. Odd again, because each PC and console had different hardware and software setups and worked perfectly before that day. The chances of multiple failures are rare if not impossible. He proceeds to blame my browsers then. X Box doesn't have a browser and my two PC's have separate OS and different browsers.</p><p>-Back to blaming the non-existant firewall.</p><p>- I ask to speak to his supervisor, who he says will say the same thing. I speak to his supervisor and I tell him that my MAC to the modem is not bound in the network. He asks for my MAC address, I provide it and he agrees stating that it unbound itself for some reason. I for one hope that all problems found here can be expedited when voiced ( or typed ). Red tape is a bitch and most companies train their employees to follow a strict guideline that discourages independent problem solving. Somewhere in every company is a bean counter setting up guidlines that make it easy to predict future revenue and 90% of the time it works but that 10% can kill a company in the long run. Monitoring online forums is a good start to close that 10% gap.</p></p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" Their only interest is getting you off the phone as quickly as possible so the call can be logged as having met a service level agreement that is no more than a call-per-hour tally sheet.<p>People who work there are micromanaged for every second they are there, every minute is logged and scrutinized and deviations are punishable. Basically it is an extremely unpleasant place to work with hostile management and filthy working conditions so when you get one of these phone reps on the phone more often than not they are not interested in your problem, they're interested only in getting you off the phone and they'll navigate their scripts in whatever way possible to to so as quickly as they can. They are also not empowered to make decisions. I'm a retiree and took a job there for extra income. I went through the training but after a few weeks on the floor I left because the work environment was so hostile and there was too much stress from the management for what they were paying me.</p><p>Unfortunately this is unlikely to change in our lifetimes, so your best bet is to try and use companies that don't outsource, but since outsource is a (justifiably) dirty word you're not going to find a company that will admit that they do it.</p></p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(10287651, '')\">Reply</a></div> <!-- if it's a top level category ' --> <div class=\"num-replies\">1 replies</div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (top level parent) --> <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"reply-container\" > <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-10318071\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=561389\"><img src=\"/css/images/default.gif\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=561389\">Mythandros</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/01/comcast-charges-hurricane-victim-2495-for-calling-customer-service.html#comment-10318071\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-01-27T02:06:50-05:00\">January 27, 2009 2:06 AM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(10318071);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=10318071');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p><p>@<a href=\"http://consumerist.com/5138463/comcast-charges-hurricane-victim-2495-for-calling-customer-service#c10287651\" rel=\"nofollow\">OpheliaMole</a>: Welcome to most call centres on the face of this planet. Comcast really doesn't like to issue credits of any type, regardless of if they might be legally required to do so. <p>I am a former comcast contract installer, I had the pleasure of doing cable & cable modem installs for several years, at a time when comcast was not nearly as evil as it currently is. </p><p>So, I really expected no issues when I ordered service after my last move. I requested a self install, but was told because I had ordered their phone service, they wouldn't allow a self install. </p><p>Fast forward two weeks to when they do finally install my cable. House is prewired, tech replaces a splitter that didn't need replaced (I had put it on, less than two weeks before, it was the same brand), and then can't activate the internet service because I have a mac & a linux laptop, and he doesn't know how to use either. I work through this, and finally get the internet activated using the mac. </p><p>After the tech left, we noticed at times some analog channels were a bit fuzzy and some digital channels were pixiliated, or freezing. So, I check the SNR using our cable box's diagnostic menu, and see that it's awful. I personally wired with RG6, so I know it's not the house wiring. So I go out and look at the splitter, and find that he hooked up the 1 line that was actually in use to a high-loss lead (7db instead of 3.5db), and then used a 2 way splitter inside, resulting in 10.5db of signal loss before it ever hit the modem or TV. I moved the line to a 3.5db leg, and all of our TV issues cleared up.</p><p>Now our phone service still didn't work properly, for the first two weeks, we had no voicemail, and at times it wouldn't ring. I went into my local comcast office, and called, quite a few times, but couldn't get anyone to look at it. The modem's diagnostic page looked good, and it passed tests when I was on the phone with them, meanwhile, my internet service & cable tv were working fine. </p><p>So then I get an insane bill for all of the installation charges. I request a credit for the installation, I can't have it, I request a prorated credit for the phone problems, I can't have it. They finally gave me like a $10 dollar credit. </p><p>I informed them I wasn't making a payment until they credited my account for the services that were not working. I had no problem paying for what was working, but I wasn't going to pay for digital voice that didn't work, and for the installation charges. They then disconnected my service and sent me a collections letter. </p><p>I'm thinking the only way I am going to get through to them is to pro actively sue them in small claims court, and announce it to all the local news media. If a couple of them run it, comcast may actually care. It seems media attention is the only thing that can get them to care any more, and sueing them is really not a bad strategy. </p><p>It's really kind of sad, all I wanted was a couple of service credits, and my phone service fixed (probably just deleted and reprovisioned) and I would have been a happy customer, they really do have the best value for TV service here, but their phone service is awful. I now have DSL & an antenna it's not the same variety of programming, or speed, but it doesn't have the customer service issues.</p></p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(10288065, '')\">Reply</a></div> <!-- if it's a top level category ' --> <div class=\"num-replies\">4 replies</div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (top level parent) --> <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"reply-container\" > <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-10349517\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=534995\"><img src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-534995-100x100.png\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=534995\">TaterTom</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/01/comcast-charges-hurricane-victim-2495-for-calling-customer-service.html#comment-10349517\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-01-28T11:57:37-05:00\">January 28, 2009 11:57 AM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(10349517);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=10349517');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>@<a href=\"#c10288065\" rel=\"nofollow\">MarilynCrassus</a>: You really need a real meter to diagnose what's going on there. The built-in status pages just don't cut it especially with SNR issues. It actually sounds like there is a single shielding strand wrapped around the center conductor on one of your fittings and the best way I can think of to find it is by connecting the meter to the input of the splitter with all equipment disconnected and their lines terminated. You can then unplug each line one by one and see when the noise drops to normal levels.</p><p>The signal drop due to the splitters doesn't really sound too bad as anything digital can usually work fine down to -10dB/mV. It depends on what's coming in. Too much juice going into a modem [or VOIP box which is also a modem]can kill sync too. Are you in a new or recently upgraded area? They may have some balancing to do.</p><p>Making non-payment threats won't help you with any company I know. I learned this the hard way with T-mobile a few years back.</p><p>@RedDawn: Congrats on your new service! Be sure to post back somewhere about the speeds you get with your new internet I'm interested to know. The service worked most of the time, I learned early on that Comcast can't operate DNS for beans, and linked to other DNS servers, I would often have service when others in my area were down. The routers were in better shape than the DNS.</p><p>The last time a promotion expired, I wound up in a go-round with customer service. I have a hard limit for the cost of internet service, at one cent past that limit, the deal is off the table. The best deal I could get was past the limit. I asked after a service tier that was slower, but within my limit, and was told that it had been discontinued. The only option remaining was that unfunny joke referred to as \"Economy\" service. That \"service\" level was insanely slow for the price, and I only put up with it until the AT&amp;T contractor could come out and install U-verse. Now I have a somewhat slower service than I originally had with Comcast, but within my limit and fast enough to be usable.</p><p>Comcast lost me because its apparent goal is to force customers into paying for service beyond requirements. One my of my pet peeves on this issue was the bundling of a TV service which had zero value to me, in order to *reduce* the internet service cost. Dumbness and then some.</p><p>With U-verse, I get internet. No overpriced phone service, no useless TV service, just internet. The speed is sufficient and the price is affordable. I'll deal with the caps issue when/if it happens. The install team showed up on time, and they made no secret of the fact that they just install this stuff to a script. The lead installer said he learned more about computers and networking from me during the course of the install than he had learned installing service for months. He was particularly interested in the pictures of the exploded VRADs in Texas. Understandable, as he had to fiddle with one much like them to get my service up. It took a bit longer that I'd have liked, but they got it done and done right in one visit. It took AT&amp;T a month and a half to get around to billing me, and they seem not to be concerned about catching up. Either they gave me a free month up front or they are billing in arrears.</p><p>Provider costs may be going up, but so are mine, the income, however, is not going up. Internet service is moving much closer to a necessity than a luxury, but it is still expendable. The reason I am paying as much as I am for internet service is because of the large data volumes available. If the prices go to high or the caps too low, I have another option.</p><p>The critical I-have-to-have-internet-to-do-this stuff can be done for $4 a month. That it what it would cost to buy one small fries a week at a nearby Wendys and use my creaky old laptop to use the wireless access point. Not the most convenient thing, but for what little remains after I cannot do the large data volumes, it is enough. Over $25 a month just to do my banking on-line and e-mail roundly fails to fly.</p> </div>	<div class=\"reply\"> <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(10296184, 'MikeVx')\">Reply</a></div> <!-- if it's a top level category ' --> <div class=\"num-replies\">2 replies</div> </div><!-- end reply- button --> </div></div> <!-- Display comment (top level parent) --> <!-- Loop through the reply comments --> <div class=\"reply-container\" > <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-10349557\"> <div class=\"inner\"> <div class=\"user-pic\"> <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=534995\"><img src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-534995-100x100.png\" width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a> </div> <div class=\"comment-header\"> <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=534995\">TaterTom</a> </div> <div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2009/01/comcast-charges-hurricane-victim-2495-for-calling-customer-service.html#comment-10349557\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2009-01-28T12:06:19-05:00\">January 28, 2009 12:06 PM</abbr></a></div> <div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(10349557);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=10349557');\">Flag for review</a></div> </div> </div><!-- end comment header --> <div class=\"comment-content\"> <p>@<a href=\"#c10296184\" rel=\"nofollow\">MikeVx</a>: Good point on the DNS... are/were you using openDNS? I would expect it to be on the first result page from a google search for the terms customertroublecall comcast and bill. Not there. This article is however. A simple question from the customer to them would have cleared it up but then again thinking it was related to a phone call would definitely prevent that from happening.</p><p>Consumerist doesn't know everything either.
