Circuit City announced today that it is close to finalizing a deal to sell all or part of its operation to one of two undisclosed potential buyers— but if the deal falls through— the store could be liquidated.

Circuit City says:

Presently, the company is engaged in significant discussions, meetings and negotiations with two highly motivated and interested parties concerning the terms of a going concern transaction. These interested parties are considering providing additional financing to allow the company to sustain operations and move forward with a subsequent restructuring through a stand-alone plan and/or purchasing the company or all or substantially all of the company's assets.

The statement goes on to say that the company feels that the transaction will probably be successful, but that it can't guarantee anything.

If there is no sale by next Friday it seems that Circuit City could be liquidated, according to a motion unsealed today by the bankruptcy court.

Best Buy is in a hiring freeze because they are about to start down the same path CC did a few years ago. A few years ago CC went on a hiring freeze, then layed off 3400 people. BB is doing the same thing, and they certainly can't afford CC right now..

As a Best Buy employee, I find it highly amusing that you think Circuit City bears any relevance in regards to BBY's success. Our biggest competition has been and will be Walmart. Walmart killed Circuit, and in many secondary markets, consumers now have only BBY or Walmart to choose from. *NOT* good for consumers. The Circuit right next door here closed and now it's a sad, empty building, and more unemployed people in our town. *NOT* good for anybody. Walmart is getting extremely aggressive on all consumer electronics, take a look at their home theater area, their iPhone venture, their partnership with Dell, their venture into computer repair and home theater installation in Dallas markets.
You folks keep cheering on the demise of these companies, and soon Walmart will be your only choice.

If you have a warranty on anything through them you are fine, the warranties aren't insured through Circuitcity themselves but through a 3rd party company that also does bestbuy warranties.
To the person who mentioned all the online shops, find me a newegg, amazon, or buy.com you can walk into and hold product in your hands, and then I will agree with you. I am currently an employee for CC and it seems like they will be bought by someone, but if they aren't that's a good 40,000 more unemployed workers, and we all know unemployment is whats going to bring this economy back up.

I was there for the 2003 Circuit City Commission RIF, and I got to see several friends of mine lose their jobs. It was painful to watch. However, at the time, CC wasn't hurting nearly as bad - in fact they were doing AOK.

The thing is, alot of us come on here and bash the company, because we want to see the company, and the ones in charge, fail. Mainly because they failed us - the consumer. We don't want to see you, or any ground floor worker lose your job - its not our goal. But you certainly aren't doing yourself any favors by hanging on to the last thread. You've stated you'll "keep it as long as you can," where will that leave you in one month? It'll leave you one month behind in a job search - and that's exactly where you'll be if you don't take action.

Get your resume updated, start sending it out like wildfire to any company you can get a job with, and get the hell out of dodge.

While I certainly have sympathy for those who literally have no other choices, I don't have much sympathy for those who don't take any action when your company has clearly been underperforming for quite some time, and showing signs of bankruptcy/liquidation for months now. You need to move the hell out - don't be the one to have to shut off the lights.

I work for Best Buy, and I do agree that CC going down is going to be a bad thing all around. No competition means less progress in the market. Over the past year I've seen cost of products come down, but services and service plans go up (albeit only about $10 at the most).

I want them to hang on there, if only to offer a solid form of competition to my company. I mean, Costco/Sams Club/Walmart, they don't offer the kind of high end products we do most of the time. In many areas CC and BBY are the only B&M stores than offer them.

The Fiance, bought a PS3 and a 32" 1080p LCD from Circuit Shitty over the summer and bought in on the extended warranty, is she totally hosed with the extended warranty if CCity goes Tango Uniform (Tits Up)? Anyone know if it is possible to get the $'s back or a gift card to use up in a hurry for the extended warranty?? Thanks!

Unfortunately while everyone else is rejoicing about this it means less competition for electronics retailers, which means higher prices for consumers. Also more job losses which means that there will be many more unemployed people that will be unable to find jobs. At least they waited until after Christmas to sell out, instead of telling workers they will be out of a job during the holiday season. It doesn't just affect seasonal and part time workers, but those who were expecting to have steady, lifetime jobs at the top of the chain.

This is of course provided they decide to liquidate their assets.

I have gotten some good deals in the past from them on video games and whatnot so I am kinda sad to see them go.
