Yesterday, a magical new application appeared in the iPhone App Store. What did it do? Well, it allowed you to order burritos from Chipotle (for pick-up). From your iPhone.

There's apparently such a huge demand for this service that it broke the application.

From TechCrunch:

As it turns out, the company decided to pull the application after a few hours because of unexpected demand that was overloading its servers. User requests were timing out with enough frequency that the team decided it would rather hold off until it could offer a more enjoyable and reliable experience. The current goal is to have it back on the App Store in two weeks, along with some cosmetic changes (many of the user reviews that were left while the app was still available had some complaints regarding the user experience).

If you already downloaded it, the application will continue to work — but the rest of you will just have to wait until they figure out how to deal with the demand for hi-tech burrito ordering.

We wonder if this says more about people's desire to use their phones to order food in new and different ways — or is it really just a commentary on how interminable a lunch-time line at Chipotle can be.

@Matt: Everything might be UNHEALTHY, but it certainly isn't BAD. It's about the only quick-food-fast chain that doesn't rely heavily on pre-fab food. They source their products to be both environmentally and nutritionally sound when at all possible. That's something that can't be said about McD's mystery meat burger patties. So yes, it might be high in fat and calories, but I personally (and I won't presume to speak for anyone but myself) would rather eat a high-fat, high-calorie burrito full of REAL FOOD than a sack full of factory-food cheeseburgers and McNuggets.

I live in an area where there's nothing but local restaurants, with two exceptions: Wendy's and Chipotle. Guess what? Sometimes I eat at the local places, sometimes I each Chipotle- it depends on my mood. But I find that if I want something "reliable," I go to Chipotle. The other places may be better, but I find them to be more inconistent. I've had a great seared tuna sandwhich (much better than Chipotle) and I've had a crap seared tuna sandwich. So, I agree that people should not fear new things, but we should also respect people's desire for consistency as well.

@captadam: Don't misunderstand... I have eaten at corporate/generic places from time to time. I've even eaten at Chipotle without suffering anything more than a somewhat blah burrito. In fact I wouldn't feel qualified to comment on it if I hadn't. Sometimes corporateFood is what's available, or what a friend really wants.

The problem isn't in people liking Chipotle or Red Lobster, it's in people refusing to try anything for which they've never seen an ad on TV. There are a few local places we'll still eat at regularly because they're good and interesting, but for the most part we've become snobby/cheapskate foodies who cook at home a lot because we get more for our effort, money and time. When we travel we try to get recommendations for unique local places rather than getting more of the same stuff we avoid at home. It's the public's desire for predictability over taste that mystifies me.

When I was an undergraduate student of architorture, I spent a semester in Italy (with a bunch of other students from the same American university.) I never understood the rabid craving for McDonald's anytime one was in sight (there wasn't one in our little hill town in Tuscany, so most of the rest of the students mobbed McDonald's every time we were in bigger, more-touristy cities.) The only things I craved were Chinese food (I found a decent place in Firenze) and Mexican food (even when I was later working in Italy, I never found good Mexican food there.) McFood was just never on my list.

I have been having an ongoing problem with Chipotle restaurants in the Los Angeles are for like 3 years. It seems that whenever the employees are making my burritos , they are giving attitude. One time I had one throw her hands up and walk away! She was a teenager it seemed and management took her side. Another instance is that if you ask for salsa or sour cream on the side they want to charge you like 25 cents or 50 cents. It is not on their menu..nor is it that way anywhere else. The workers seem to be very hostile lationos..and only latinos. When corporate was contactd, the person in Denver didn't return calls and after a few calls had a very mean gay man call me back andd tells me I am a "racist", because he is latino and that is an insult to him because there is a difference between latino and mexican and so forth. I said "Well, how do I explain the employees?" "They are latino, no?" He told me he watched the videos of the restaurant and did not see anything that the employees did wrong. Wow, what customer service! He then instructed me to "Not" to go to Chipotle anymore and why do I go there anyways?" "WHAT??? Did I hear him right?!" Alot of the male employees are too machismo'd out and are quite frankly looking for fights. I am an older man and I am not at all trying to start any fights etc. I am a gay man myself and my lover and I have spent alot of money at thiese establishments. I feel like there is a "no gay" attitude from the latino workers. Actually, in the beginning of my going to chipotle, there use to be this very sweet nice manager who actually had great customer service tactics and was such a pleasure, he was latino. now it seems that the employees are heavily tattooed and from jail or something. I know Los Angel;es has these job programs for like that. Never in my life have I been treated so badly

I clearly see an issue with this...a customer who wants to order via iPhone sees it as skipping the line, and will just walk in and expect pick it up. There's only one buffet to prepare the burritos, how is the clerk going to do this with a line of impatient people standing there waiting a turn? I see more cashiers getting yelled at by customers who are impatient. "I ordered it on iPhone, it should be ready!" "Well I was here for fifteen minutes, wait your turn!"

CVS photo has a thing like this, where people can order pictures from home as well as in store, but it's all time stamped and usually there is under three orders at a time. This is manageable, and things get done without complaints. The system works in low-demand situations.
