David L. Mackie, a 35-year-old salesman from Oklahoma is perhaps the coolest person ever. He personalized his Capital One credit card with Nick Nolte's mugshot, and now, embarrassed, Capital One has offered to pay him $50 to send it back.

Alright, I thought I had a pretty well-developed sense of humor. However, I just don't get how this is funny.
Is it relevant today? (no, this arrest was in 2002)
Does it apply to Cap1? (no, it's a photo of an actor)
Does it apply to the guy who got the card? (no, he lives in OK)

Now, if the president of Capital One had been arrested, and the guy got a card with the Cap1's president's mugshot, I'd be laughing my ass off... but c'mon. I could put friggin Brittany Spears shaved head on a Cap1 card and nobody would care.

In 1996 First USA made the same offer, to put "a favorite photo or special image" on a credit card. Strangely, the credit card company rejected a photo of a street sign because it was "possibly copyrighted material," yet had no problem whatsoever with the image of former U.S. Vice-President J. The linked article makes it sound like "how could Citi have been so stupid". Well, he got the card because the processing center in India didn't have a clue who was in the picture -- think anyone in the US would recognize a famous Indian actor? Just like when I went through customs with a Hugo Chavez doll, and the TSA agent asked me "Who's that?". Even after I told her, she didn't know who it was. Very, very funny.

@missdona: They sent him the letter asking for it back before he actually received the card in the mail. It sounds like either somebody approved it by accident, and once approved, you can't cancel it, someone possibly saw it coming off the line, or someone was reviewing the images a day later and realized what it was.

I have a BofA card with a picture of my Ex and I on it that I got before she broke up with me. It was my first CC. BofA wants money to take her picture off, and I've decided to keep it on, if only to remind me to not be stupid, again.
