More and more media outlets are catching on to the fact that Circuit City's liquidation "deals" aren't as hot as normal sale prices.

First, here's a report from Cincinnati's WCPO:

We Compare Prices

    * A Samsung 46 inch LCD TV, Model #LN46A850: Originally $2,599, now on sale for $2,339...but we found the exact model on Best Buy's website for $2,099....$300 less.
* A Vizio 42 inch LCD TV, Model #SV420XVT1A: Was $1,199, now marked down to $1,079...but we found the same model number TV at Target for just $1,029... $50 less.
* And a Panasonic 50 inch LCD TV, Model #TH-50P80U: Was $1,399, now $1,259...but both Amazon.com and Beach Camera had it for less than $1,000, a at least $300 less, and at Beach you even get free shipping!

One of the companies running the sale defends the prices....telling the Los Angeles Times "we have commitments to banks and creditors who are expecting a certain return."

But you're not committed to shop at these prices...especially since all sales are final, with no returns.

And from Tennessee, an interview with a woman who went to Circuit City looking for Wii games — only to find out "we got up here and it's higher than it is at the normal stores."

TheStreet.com has compiled a list of reasons to avoid liquidation sales entirely, not least of which is that the sale prices are crap:

In fact, most liquidators will actually raise prices to full retail or a token 10% off because they know the store will be packed with people. That means prices at liquidation sales are often higher than you could have gotten at the store before it went into bankruptcy. Those "75% off or more" discounts that you are imagining won't arrive until the final week of the liquidation sale — a time when anything you would really want will already be long gone.

For those of you looking for some additional analysis of the economics of liquidation, check out this article from Portfolio:

The fact is that liquidations tend to be pretty bad places to find a bargain. It's worth remembering that a liquidation isn't the kind of sale put on by a store which needs to clear out their shelves in order to make space for new merchandise: there's no new high-margin merchandise coming in for shoppers to buy, and so the opportunity cost of keeping the old merchandise on the shelves is actually very low. Circuit City stores are going to be open through March: there's little point in having them simply sit there empty thanks to too-big early discounts.

The LA Times has some interviews with pissed off shoppers who wanted bigger discounts:

"I've been waiting in line for half an hour each day based on employees' promises that prices could come down, but they haven't," said McGinness, a TV commercial producer from Los Angeles. "It's very disappointing."

I don't know about most of you, but with all the TVs available, I would not want to buy one online without seeing it first. More and more, people are buying tvs online, but do they know a Vizio IS NOT as good as Sony? Consumer's perception of HDTVs is way off, especially when it comes to LCD vs. Plasma. Plasma has better color and contrast, LCD is brighter. Thats it. They both have the same life expectancy. You cannot learn this from shopping on Amazon. Keep buying from stores, and keep people employed. Walmart does not know anything about selling TVs or computers, so why would you shop there to save a couple bucks? Find a local store with reliable sales people that know what they are talking about. The competition is everywhere, so prices will be reasonable where ever you shop. Next time you want to save 10 bucks by shopping online, think about the jobs being cut out there because people are not going into stores to buy what they want.

There was a rug shop in Boulder, CO, which maintained a "Going Out of Business Clearance" sale for close to 10 years, I think. I can't actually remember when it started going out of business, it had been that way almost ever since I remember the store moving-in to the location after a locksmith moved out. The funny thing is, after the shop was closed for about a month, a rug shop opened up there with a new name. I'm waiting for it to start its "going out of business" sale too. I can't say I ever shopped there, but I doubt their deals were all that great as they sustained the process of closing for about a decade.

I can't imagine trying to get manufacturers warranty coverage on anything with a receipt from a liquidation sale... those receipts have stuff like 'all sales final' on them as well. It would be embarrassing as well if you had to contact them regarding a TV you just bought at a liquidation sale that did not work when you got it home...

Ripping people off or misleading advertising, especially in this horrible economy is so wrong but in many ways is also so American. Sad.

Nothing unusual. Liquidators start with the highest price they can, and mark down in increments until they sell all they can, in order to sell the most items at the highest price possible, then they sell what's left (shelves, etc) to someone else. Standard Operating Procedure. They'll begin marking items down more over the coming weeks. When you see "only a few days left" you'll know you're in the final months of the sale. They try to make you think they're about to pack up and if you don't get it now you won't ever get it, but there's usually more time. Since CC probably has leases on their buildings, that's probably how long the liquidation will last.

Liquidation "sale" are the biggest farce around. I worked for the Bombay Company when they were going out of business at the end of 2007 and it was absolutely ridiculous. All the prices go up to the full retail price and then sections of the store usually start at 20-30% off. It is all a marketing game. The "going out of business" signs drive the bargain shoppers to a store they would not normally shop at and then when they see something is on "sale" they think they are getting a great deal. The first weekend of our Bombay closing we did over $30k in sales, 8-10x a normal day. It is all a game. Get the most inventory out for the highest price and then bring on the real deals. But the thing is that most people will buy it now, or next week, thinking they are getting a good deal.

To sum it up: Liquidators are marketing geniuses and they make a lot of money doing it.

Last deal I got at a liquidation sale was kitchen towels. Went for kitchen accessories and appliances. Everything was either not well-discounted, totally picked over, or useless crap. But I got 80% off some nice dishtowels!

I have learned my lesson that one only goes to liquidation sales when one happens to be passing by. It isn't worth the gas for a special trip.
