How should we react? What habits are important during a long, deep recession?

9 Good Habits For A Deep Recession

Keep A Cool Head
Freaking out and selling all of your investments, or stopping your contributions to your 401k because you're panicking isn't going to help you in the long term. Don't put your emotions in charge of your money.

Learn To Dislike Debt And Pay It Off
So-called "consumer debt" is your enemy during a recession. Pay it off as quickly as you can. This type of debt includes car loans and credit cards. A good way to tackle the debt is to start with the loans that have the highest interest rates. Another strategy is called the "debt snowball." It doesn't matter how you do it, just do it.

Suggested Reading: Reader Pays Off $14,330 In 20 Months With Our Tips, Use Snowball Method Spreadsheet To Pay Off Debts, 5 Expenses You Can't Afford If You Have Credit Card Debt

Know Where Your Money Is Going
There are lots of different ways to track your spending and make a budget. There are online solutions, such as Mint.com and Wesabe.com. You could also use Quicken or Microsoft Money. Or you can do it yourself.

Suggested Reading: 8 Free Personal Finance Management Programs

Eliminate Waste
Once you've taken an inventory of your spending, think about how to shrink it. It's not just about cutting back, it's about plugging the money leaks. What are you spending money on that you don't really need or even use? Everyone can probably find at least one thing.

Suggested Reading: 10 Stupid Ways Smart People Waste Money

Buy Smart
If you were going to spend a couple hundred dollars on some electronics — you'd do a little research right? So why not do a little planning before you go grocery shopping? A little thinking before you shop can save you a bunch of money — even without using coupons.

Suggested Reading: 7 Ways To Save On Groceries Without Using Coupons

Buy Used
Used cars, used clothes, used furniture. Buying a high quality used item is often smarter than buying a cheaply made new item. A late model used car is a better value than a new car. Check craigslist or flea markets for cool furniture that needs a loving home. Thrift stores are like a treasure hunt. If you are going to buy a new item — by a high quality product and research it before buy.

Suggested Reading: Shopping Strategy Of Millionaires: Buy Used Or High Quality.

Tidy Up Your Finances
Next year might be a good time to refinance, so make sure that your credit score is good and your finances are in order. If you need to check your credit report, you are entitled to one free report per year from each of the credit bureaus. Go to www.annualcreditreport.com.

Understand Your Investments
Make sure you understand what your are investing in and the level of risk that you are taking on. Do a little homework and make sure that your financial adviser, if you have one, is not a crook. Here are some good places to start: Certified Financial Planner Board Of Standards, and FINRA BrokerCheck.

Keep Cash On Hand
You should have an emergency fund, with 3-6 months of living expenses in a savings account. You can also save money by paying cash. In a recession, cash is your friend.

Suggested Reading:Paying Cash-Only, Family Spends $1,800 Less, Create An Emergency Fund

I certainly agree with you on learn to dislike debt and pay it off To reduce debts we need to first prioritize loans, which we need to pay off first. Always clear those loans that have high interest rate. This is what I did when I was in deep neck debts. This suggestion was given to me by financial advisers of bills. They also have a tool called Billsiq, which helps you to know your financial health.

All of these ideas should be done no matter what the economy is doing. ... I pay all my fixed expenses via wire transfer from my bank account. I have only used a credit card to buy something like twice in the last 3 years. Then I paid off the balance when the bill came in. I collect interest. I don't pay interest to loan sharks (i.e, credit card companies), sorry. I basically always pay cash. Paying with cash makes you feel the exchange at that moment. When you throw down the plastic there was a study done that says you end up spending about 20% more than you would with cash.

This is my 8th or 9th gas crisis, 2nd no 3rd downturn and the second time the world has come to an end as we know it. Heck I was a child and remember the Cuban missle crisis. The best advice is still in the Old Testament especially Proverbs. Earn, save, pay cash, avoid high interest rate (10% or more) and give generously. A great book on value management is the humorous "How to Survive Without a Salary" by Charles Long. Forget the sizzle and eat the steak! CarSoup.com is a good source for used vehicles but check the NADA book values and Consumer Report Used car guides. Look for families selling as part of an estate for a relative. Used fleet vehicles. Some small cars get as good gas mileage with an automatic trans ie Mazda 3 or Toyota Corolla. If most of your driving is less than 10 miles put a motorcycle fairing on a good mountain with street tires and a rear rack.

The irony is that much of the paranoia-inducing coverage is probably sponsored by retailers and furniture stores...wouldn't it be devastating to them if we all start swapping our stuff instead of being so paranoid and paying 300% markups? Just look what it did for the music industry.

I only WISH I had known about craigslist and buying used years ago vs. wasting so much money on a brand new couch. These items are absolutely worthless on resale value after you bring them home. And they are never new or clean again....most efforts on upkeep are futile and wastefully expensive. Plus, if you ever put them in storage or move to an apt or house with pre-existing infestation problems...your furniture will not be spared.

Buy from normal people in your neighborhood at a moving sale, or when they decide to upgrade...and get them to halve their asking price. The risk is negligible at that kind of pricing... and you're out less money even throwing it in the dumpster than what you'd lose on a new piece that just doesn't work for your space needs or gets damaged accidentally. With substantial savings and no bug issues..you simply can resell or give it away to charity any item that doesn't work out without gut-wrenching financial losses.

Haven't you ever tried to buy something at a rummage sale the owner was So attached to...simply because they had paid too much for it?

I bought a like-new, super-comfy dual-reclining loveseat this year for $85 vs the $150 asking price. I cleaned it and now it only has my own personal cooties associated with it :). It fits perfectly, works great and if I move or it needs fixing...I can sell it, toss it, or fix it for far less than the $800 it would have cost me in a store.

The beauty of re-sale is that if you get a good enough deal...you might even make a profit or break-even on the item-without ever suffering depreciation or wear and tear losses.

Plus you get to brag about what a deal you snagged.

Go to www.freecycle.com too. Normal, hygienic people move and give away extra clutter all the time.

I used to make alot of money and had everything I could possibly want or need, then I got divorced and lost almost everything and still had to pay college tuition for two of my children. Now I make much less money and have learned to live without all the excesses and am happy and content. I just wish I hadn't spent so much in the past and had some savings for the future. I only spend what I have today and do not use credit cards which can charge up to 29% interest. I would like to earn 29% on my investments. Also not going out for meals saves much money, so when I do once in awhile I go somewhere for a really nice meal and splurge.

1) I never had a single penny of DEBT in my life(except the Credit card debt at the end of each month for that month, which will be paid at least 2 days before its due date, in full :-)
2) Quicken has been my friend from the year 2000, every dollar(no pennies...) is tracked...
3) Waste elimination: I can save something here
4) I guess I buy smart.. except very few times for few amounts.
5) Buy used: Yep, my both the cars are used.. as long as things are acceptable for the price that I paid, I dont mind in buying SOME items used(like Car, wooden stuff etc, but not clothing, kitchen ware etc.. though)
6) every year, I must get back my house rent with the money earned money, thats my goal, its working every year...
9) I always Ladder in CDs all my liquid money. My safe buffer is 6-9 months of expenses... all this money will be laddered so that at any end of the month, I will have access to a min of $5000 without paying any penalty of early withdrawal

"Cleaning up debt in a recession is a very very very bad idea.

WHAT? Cleaning up your debt is ALWAYS a good idea.
It is true that recession=inflation but I would rather pay my debt now and clear it up. It isn't a matter of how much it is worth, it is worth what it is worth now and paying down your debts now
"If you have a fixed rate loan keep it, and put extra money in cd's and such don't spend it. CC's and other variable rate debt needs to be liquidated."
My money markets are beating the hell out of CD's and I can get my $ whenever I want w/o fear of penalties.
You have a finite amount of money in your checking account and you don't pay interest on any purchases you make because you're not adding to or creating a balance that has to be paid later. With a debit card, you're buying now and paying now, just like cash. You just have to be careful and not overdraw on your checking account. :)

When I had done all my research and decided I wanted to buy my car, I ran the VIN on Carfax to see if the car had been in any accidents or had any major recalls. I think it cost me $10 or $20. (They usually list the VIN number on the either the Vehix.com website or the dealer's website, or at least they did when I used it.) The car came back clean, I bought it the next week and just paid it off a year ago. It's been an excellent car and I have no complaints. Vehix.com and Carfax are wonderful resources. Good luck!

More people are losing their jobs every day. Companies have lost their credit and are closing their doors. Just because the oil companies have made record profits doesn't mean everyone else has. The 3 major American auto makers just got handed a bailout because they're losing their shirts. If we're not in a recession, why did Wall Street need a $700 billion bailout to avoid a complete economic collapse? If the economic experts say we're in a recession, who am I to argue? Basically, you can use a chlorox wipe on a table, not a couch. So it makes sense why you wouldn't get bugs from a bookcase. Termite damage would be obvious, so no one in their right mind would buy something that looked like it was about to collapse.

I will buy furniture used, but never couches and never mattresses. And I'll never buy kitchen utensils, tools and electrics used. There's just something about them used that makes me think no amount of scrubbing will get them truly clean.

On the bright side, last I checked my private loan interest was down from 8.5% to 5%.@youbastid: IF all I had was government loans with interest rates like that I probably wouldn't mind so much. But when you combine those with private loans, even paying on the graduated repayment plan, I am still around $300/mo on loans...and don't have rates like yours. My government loans are at a fixed 3.25%, private at a variable 5%...
Is there a way to lower the interest on already consolidated loans or am I stuck with the 3.25%?

Write to your reps and maybe we can start a movement! If they can bail out those wall street f&(*&@rs, why can't they help us?

@Urgleglurk: It took three years, but I did it! Had to pick priorities carefully, especially with a home that needs a lot of work -- it's so easy to sink another $1000 into needed home repairs instead of the emergency fund, which then prevents going into debt for the SURPRISE necessary home repairs. But I did it!

And, no lie, one of the ways I got there was dumping in $85 from a garage sale or $100 from teaching a community rec class or $20 from taking a survey.

We also declare "frugality months" in our house where we feel like we've been spending too much the month before. Frugality months almost always result in a little extra to dump in the emergency fund.

Chelsea from Quicken Online here.

There are lots of free Web-based applications available online these days. While your post mentions Quicken and others for desktop money management, I'd also suggest users looking to get a forward-looking glance at their money (for free) try Intuit's Quicken Online. It is especially helpful for basic personal finance tasks, and addresses a different audience need than Quicken desktop software does.

Thanks!

Me, me, me (or should I say us, us, us). We read Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover at the end uf 2006 and in 2007 we paid off $50,000+ (50% in student loan debt) in debt using the snowball and this year we fully funded our emergency fund using the same methods. We also, track all our expenses using Quicken, have a yearly spending plan and work off an allowance system. We had a lot of bad habits but in two short years we have dramatically changed the way we manage our money.

To some extent, debt can also help you retain some financial flexibility. When our car bit the dust a couple months ago, we took out a loan to buy a replacement; we had the cash to pay for it, but doing so would have wiped out a significant portion of our savings. Ditto with the no-interest no-payments loan we took out to fix our circuit breaker box (which we repaid before the term was up).

It's important, I think, to make sure you have some liquid funds available, and if that means taking out a loan, well, hold your nose and try to make extra payments when you can.

@TrueBlue63: The problem with having debt going into a recession, as I see it, is it limits your financial flexibility. You have to meet that minimum payment every month, no matter what your job situation is. In a recession it's nice to have as few fixed financial obligations as possible.

I agree with you that fixed rate debt is not as much of a problem as variable rate, though. I'm not in a big hurry to pay off my student loan.

BTW, while recessions normally do equal inflation, this one so far seems to be showing signs of being *deflationary*. I don't think that will last, but it's pretty interesting.

Cleaning up debt in a recession is a very very very bad idea.

Recessions = inflation, so the $ you give them is worth less and less.

If you have a fixed rate loan keep it, and put extra money in cd's and such don't spend it. CC's and other variable rate debt needs to be liquidated.

It is always about living within your means, not if you have debt. Debt is a commodity just like eggs, it isn't good or bad. It is just the improper use of debt that is bad.

OK, I usually don't nitpick about the postings, but what the hell does this mean?

"For many of us, this is the first recession where we are responsible for our own financial well-being."

I always thought we're all responsible for our own financial well-being. Maybe the editor was trying to imply that people are just now waking up to their own responsibilities?

Anyway, I think the first advice is the best... Don't panic! There's a lot of shit going on, but you'll be more prone to making foolish decisions if you react emotionally.

I think that "Eliminate Waste", "Buy Smart", and "Buy Used" can be combined and augmented with Ramit's "Only buy new things when replacing something old". I feel dumb for not having considered that sort of thing before. It definitely makes me second-guess myself when I'm tempted to buy something. When I see some clothes or computer upgrades, I contemplate whether I will be willing to sacrifice anything I currently have to acquire it. Essentially, for every shirt you buy, you have to give one away. It makes you think twice about the perceived necessity of purchases. It's put a huge dent in my spending.

I've been hearing this advice since the 1970's and I don't know anyone that has been able to do it. Besides, if you're already in the hole with credit cards and loans, you won't have enough money to even start doing this. Great advice if you're just getting started and have no significant debt.

I just wanted to share something that I learned from a financial advisor about emergency funds. Say you've saved $9000 (good for you!), what do you do then? He suggested putting $3000 in savings, $3000 in a 6 month CD and the last $3000 in a 12 month CD so that you always have access to some cash. I thought it was great advice. Now, if only I had all that money, lol. Actually, you don't have to wait until you saved that much, a lower amount would do just as well.

In all fairness, we already know GDP is sharply negative for Q4, and market conditions across the board have badly deteriorated. It seems a little PollyAnnaish/obsessive to declare this economic environment anything but recessionary. Focusing on one "rule of thumb" definition seems like missing the forest for the trees.

@SuperSally: not every used item is bedbug/woodworm infested - ive done my whole living room with used furniture: coffee table/end tables: $75 saving at least $200. huge entertainment center wall $600 (approx $800 savings). reclining sofa and loveseat $500 (approx $500 savings). so thats around $1500 of savings. Coffee table is a bit beat up, but the rest are all in almost-new condition -were from people living in nice places that had either just moved or were moving and didnt need it anymore - if you buy carefully the risk is no more than buying from a store... and the more than 50% savings was well worth it to me...

Also - if you're worried about bedbugs, there is still dining room sets/tables/chairs used that have no upholstery to stress about. If nobody bought that stuff used there'd be no antique market...
