My guess? At+t was trying to clear out some old inventory of iPhone 1 chargers, many of which are completely incompatible with the newer 3G model (for some reason... ah, but that's for another post). Have any of you readers been given a 'free' accessory that didn't work?

things break, and even with cords and cables, there's a tiny fraction that don't work when you get them. so you take it back and get one that does work. you don't immediately write to consumerist and allege some sort of underhanded scheme to slough off bad product to consumers. that simply wouldn't serve the purposes of at&t. they're not making any money off the things since they are giving them away and i can probably count on one hand the number of people in the US who were waiting patiently for the free car charger to buy their new iPhone, so it obviously wasn't to woo new customers.

they're just getting inventory off the shelves. if the stuff didn't work, they would find some way to call the chargers a capital investment and depreciate it, taking a tax break in the process. they would at least be recouping some of the money that way.

To be honest, I have been to their stores 2 times this year and have given them a 5 star rating on each visit - the people seemed to care and take ownership of concerns I had, but I haven't been in last 2 months. Alot can happen in 2 months! It appears that most posts are nt angry at AT&T. Hooray! An American company that is actually training and supporting their people?

I don't think I'd accept a charger from ATT, free or not. Last time I went to the ATT store, all of their chargers and data cables were generic brands in ATT packaging.

Check Amazon or ebay instead. The ATT store wants $30 for a Razr car charger. Amazon sells the genuine OEM Motorola version for less than $10. You can probably find a charger for your iphone on Amazon for cheap.

And those "free" chargers are actually from China and are ordered by the store for around 89 cents, can be purchased off ebay for no more than $4-5 with free shipping. So the next time you get a "discount" by receiving a free charger, think about that.

Well the new apple stuff doesn't support firewire which sucks bigtime, because actual throughput with firewire 400 is almost twice as fast as usb 2.0. Even though usb 2.0 has a theoretical transfer rate of 480 mbps, in practice it's much less. Most people see the theoretical rate and assume usb 2.0 is faster, but that's an incorrect assumption.

Also, I have an iphone, and it DOES charge with firewire. No interface, but it WILL charge with my firewire ipod charger.

Apparently Apple notified makers of "Made for iPod" accessories (such as my stereo) in 2005 about the impending removal of FireWire charging support; since the stereo model can't have been out for any more than 2 years (from what I've seen), I'm a bit pissed off.

This is the worst post I have encountered on the consumerist to date. Misinformation and inflammatory speculation do not make for quality journalism. That is an iphone 3g charger, if you can't figure out how to plug it in to your phone (hint: not the headphone jack), post your email and i'll draw you a dirty picture. All the AT&T branded chargers are for new production phones only, so no such luck on the "durr it says AT&T so lets allude to incompetence and shady dealings to attract a large, disgruntled, but not critical and balanced reader base." There are no 2g accessories in corporate locations. If the consumer needs to exchange it, maybe it was defective, they get to do it for a whole year! That's pretty generous, but writing anything like that would make this article less inflammatory. I hope this article is corrected, for I love my daily consumerist dose.

While many docks, speaker systems, and radio transmitters made for the 1st gen iPhone have not been compatible with the 3G iphone, almost all sync cables and car chargers should be compatible.

Probably a dud car charger, and a quick trip to your local at&t store should resolve this.

This post right here has to be the worst Ive encountered on consumerist yet. Misinformation combined with incendiary speculation is not a form of journalism. That IS an iphone 3g charger, so the consumer needs to figure out how to plug things in to his iphone (hint: don't force this into the headphone jack). If you need help, post your email and I'll draw you a dirty picture. Also, all the AT&T branded car chargers are of brand new production and aren't made for models not currently sold by AT&T (eg iphone 2g). Unfortunatley, this is an "iphone+problem+at&t=post worthy content" recipe. I love you guys at consumerist, you are a part of my daily routine, but for the love of fair and at least google-checked journalism, correct this post. All 2g iphone accessories are not available in retail, at least at corporate retail.

I work for AT&T as a Retail Sales Consultant and the picture above is of the new generation of iPhone chargers we sell (used to sell the Griffin brand). The only change is that we've added a usb port behind where the white dot is, so you can charge a bluetooth or plug in a GPS while charging your phone.

All of the accessories we sell come with a 12 month warranty. If the charger doesn't charge your iPhone, bring it into a corporate store and they will switch it out for you. I'm guessing there is something wrong with the charger, because I've sold about 50 of those exact chargers (to 1st gen and 2nd gen iPhone users) and my customers have not reported any problems.

That "free" charger is old inventory meant for something other than what you are buying.
The reason is doesn't work is that Apple changed charging protocols and stopped supporting firewire in favor of USB.

Firewire uses 12v and usb uses 5v dc. When you are making a car accessory, it's much easier to use the firewire charging ports since the car is already using 12v current. The new phones don't accept it though, only the usb 5v will work.
