@snazz: no training that is even close to relevant to that job position would be able to weed out peoples biases towards other people. In fact, even asking people how they feel about a particular race and religion would get the company in a lot of trouble, becasue they could then be viewed as being biased towards the potential employee for his beliefs.


Assholes are assholes, no amount of training will ever fix that.

@snazz: I don't think any training program could weed out these idiots. No one is going to pull a stunt like this during training. Most jobs just have their mandatory \"don't be a racist or sexist douche\" video that you maybe have to re-watch each year.

It's just a matter of UPS firing the idiot and apologizing. I wouldn't be surprised if companies like this have a special fund set aside to 'make amends' when one of their drivers does this.

The Sikh will get over it, the douche will get a new job, and the world will keep on spinning. The most unfortunate part of this whole story is the negative shadow it casts on all other UPS drivers just trying to do their job. You never hear about a driver going out of their way to help someone get their package or carry it into their home, but as soon as one fails at being funny or something, it's all over the news.

@JakeChance84: Well, a lot of the stories on here are isolated incidents with certain exceptions of unmitigated systematic suck within a company.

I'd certainly hope this doesn't make all UPS delivery people look bad, my UPS guy is an uber teddy bear that helped me get a ginormous package into my house earlier this month. He may very well be the civilian alter ego of some sort of superhero as far as I'm concerned.

@Gstein: I, too, have an ongoing love affair with my UPS guy. He has my phone number and will call me when I have a package to see if I'm going to be home, or if he should hold it at the station or drop it at my apartment's office. And he gets packages up the stairs for me.

Now if the USPS guy would learn a few things, I'd be golden.

He does not have the right to let his racist beliefs spill over into his job, which is a service industry job where he has contact with many people of different stripes. If he's too stupid not to do his job correctly while not using racist slurs, he doesn't deserve his job. This isn't the only person he may not like that he's going to encounter in his job. The driver needs to get over it, not the customer.

Actually, everyone has the right to live their lives without being called names by ignorant idiots. It's called basic human decency. That's completely different than someone getting outraged over something minor that doesn't really involve them. How would you like it if your whole life people called you a terrorist just because of your skin color? Maybe you could get used to it, maybe you could let it roll off your back sometimes. But after a while that stuff builds up and affects your mental outlook on the world - so don't give me your bullshit about too much political correctness. It's verbal and mental abuse, plain and simple, and that's not something that should be tolerated in any situation.

As a Sikh, I can't say this is really anything new. There have been cases of beatings and even murder of Sikhs due to post-9/11 American radicalism.

You can compare our current policies of having undeclared pre emptive war, warrantless searches and wiretaps, the patriot act, imprisoning people without a trial, the buyout of our banking system and the general trashing of the Geneva Conventions to that of Communist Russia and find many similarities. Seriously.... UPS can suck it. They screw up my deliveries EVERY time. The last time I had something delivered by them, (without having the option of choosing another company) they left the package at my neighbors. ON PURPOSE! They say that it is a common way of delivering packages. Now for a little perspective. I live in an apartment complex, where I have had a new neighbor 6 times in the past 2 years. I don't even know my new neighbor, yet UPS just assumes that I do, and that we are friendly like that?? It took me an extra two weeks of constantly going over to the neighbors house to try and get my package. I hate UPS..

I told them I didn't feel comfortable holding their package for them since I don't know them at all, and the FedEx guy didn't want to take no for an answer! @vitaminmax: I also avoid UPS whenever possible. Fedex 3-day is sometimes even cheaper than its UPS equivalent, and I can't remember a time when Fedex missed or damaged a shipment. In fact, except when I lived in Hawaii, 3-day usually means 2-day for my deliveries.

Both companies have been pretty good about leaving a door hanger when they miss a delivery though, and you can circle an option to have them leave it in a certain place. They've also been pretty good about leaving packages with the apartment office (although personally I hate when they do that, because the office \"isn't responsible for packages\" which is a total cop-out crock in my opinion.)

Back on topic though, I think a lot of regressives (sorry, I meant conservatives) are bitter about the election and lashing out at progressive things like racial equality, education funding, transportation funding, the right to a personal arms cache, etc...

@vitaminmax: Yeah, UPS sometimes leaves a package with a neighbor. They do it because they delivered when you weren't home, and usually do it after a couple failed attempts. While it'd be nice if you can ask them to deliver within a time frame, it's just not feasible since it would mess up their routes. So rather than leave a slip and have you come down to the distribution center to pick it up, they'll leave it with a neighbor. Most people I've talked to seem to like this, myself included. I think FedEx does this as well.

@vitaminmax: I have to say, UPS has left me more dented packages than USPS or FedEx. The one package I got from DHL didn't have a working tracking number, but arrived intact and on time.

UPS also delivers to the other side of the building, which is okay, as that's my grandfather's office.

Even though I shelled out $10 for insurance, the FedEx guy just left it in front of the door to my house without getting a signature. In contrast, when I ordered a refurbished business desktop (also this month, but not with insurance — it wasn't offered), the UPS guy did not do the same.

@vitaminmax: Sounds about right. I got stuck with UPS a few times this past month as it was the only option for delivery with a couple of the Christmas gifts I bought online. Not one of the packages was delivered on time (one took four business days to arrive even though I paid for \"next day\" shipping) and with one of the shipments, UPS mistook the return address for my address, got the package all the way to the substation near my house, and sent it back to the company. Then they sent me a little postcard telling me they \"couldn't find my address.\" I have no idea how in the heck they managed to get a postcard delivered (unless they relied on the USPS to find my house, which cracks me up.) Needless to say I managed to get most of the money spent on shipping costs refunded, and I plan on never using UPS again if I can help it.

I mailed a package via UPS 27 days ago. It has gone all over the country twice over and then disappeared. Thanks UPS for completely screwing up(4 recorded mistakes now). since it was my $550 graphics card but the shipping was paid for by the company who made it they get the insurance money, UPS gets away with it, and I get nothing.

@I work as a meth lab technician: I'm in Canada, eh, and when I order things from the States I explicitly demand that they be shipped via USPS, and not by UPS. Horrible service and delivery times notwithstanding, UPS will instantly add on roughly sixty dollars of charges to carry my box over the border for me. And it is not a duty fee - I still have to pay that separately. Why UPS gets to do this, but USPS doesn't, is beyond me.

Either way, UPS requires pickup of the item for examination before paying a claim - you shouldn't have let them pick it up without a refund.

I had UPS completely destroy a $100+ ISDN modem I sold someone on eBay - I immediately refunded the buyer, then fought with UPS for 3 weeks until they finally paid the claim (after initially denying it because \"too many of the bubbles in the bubble wrap were popped\") - I pointed out that they probably popped WHEN THEY RAN OVER MY PACKAGE!

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the responses came more from an extreme disdain for the Canadian government than religious extremism. If you look at the initial reports of that poll, you'll actually find that Canadian Muslims report being satisfied with their countries to much larger degrees than average Canadians (81% vs. 61%, see [www.cbc.ca]).

Of course, I'm not saying that religious extremism doesn't exist because it obviously does. I'm simply suggesting that you should look at raw data and consider other possibilities instead of accepting the implications of biased sources at face value.

Yep... My UPS carrier is a great guy who I've known for years. I also know some folks who work more on the white collar ( -v- brown collar) side of the company.

Sure... UPS can suck, but they are the largest transportation company in the world. In that light they usually seem to suck like a lot of other corporations of their size (Microsoft, Ford, IBM, Starbucks, etc.). It really comes down to the luck of the draw with many package carriers: FedEx Ground is horrible in some parts of my area... and USPS?? Er.. No thanks.

I'm pretty peeved at UPS. I paid for overnight shipping, and on the day of delivery... UPS never came. Oh, but their website says they tried to deliver it and it wasn't home. Problem is, I stayed home from work *JUST* to get the package. I called UPS, the rep basically it wasn't my fault I didn't answer the door.

But nobody CAME to the door. At all.

UPS doesn't care. Their driver f'd off and said they dropped it off, but didn't. I'm out of the money I paid for overnight and screwed.

@Preyfar: I paid for overnight shipping and for some reason they just didn't deliver my shipment at all -- for FOUR DAYS. On the tracker it didn't even say they attempted to deliver. Instead of complaining to UPS, I complained to the vendor. I explained nicely that I really liked their company and was not dissatisfied with the product I ordered, but was extremely unhappy with their choice of carrier, and explained what happened. I also said I'd reconsider ordering from them again if they kept using UPS for their overnight deliveries. The company I ordered from apologized and refunded my shipping charges. I realize that a screwed-up delivery isn't really their fault, it's UPS's, but from experience I know that UPS could give less of crap when you complain.

I think this is funny, here's why: This man probably has a HUGE history of doing things like this to people and now UPS will look at his past deliveries and see exactly what he's been doing.

Hopefully he'll lose his job. UPS is known for paying a good wage to \"skilled\" workers. You don't have to have a PhD to work there, and it is a good job. What will he do after he leaves UPS?

Every Sikh I've ever met has been kind, soft-spoken, and respectful. I have nothing but love for Sikhs. They're very misunderstood because they do have a very stereotypical \"terrorist\" appearance. The men wear turbans and have long beards. People just assume they're Muslim when in fact Sikhism has nothing to do with Islam. It's more closely related to Hinduism in fact.

UPS is absolutely abhorrent. After the experience I had trying to use them, I will never use them again. I will DRIVE a package to its destination before I use UPS. Scenario- I took part in one of those \"free trial!\" offers & didn't cancel quickly enough before they started sending me shit & billing me for it. So in order to get back the money they debited from my account, I had to send back the package they sent me. When it finally arrived, I took it to UPS(cause apparently that's who the company goes through) & had them return it to sender. The guy wrote \"return to sender\" on it & told me to have a nice day.

Fast forward to the next day. Around 6 pm, I find the SAME DAMN PACKAGE on MY doorstep as the UPS truck is speeding away. The stupid fucks delivered it back to ME even though it clearly said RETURN TO SENDER on it. So I wrote REFUSED, RETURN TO SENDER on it in inch-high black letters, circled the return address & drew a big black arrow pointing to it, & took it back to the UPS place. It hasn't been delivered back to me yet so I'm assuming it made it back to the company.

Now, to get my money back, ugh...

I ordered a package by snail mail a while ago, didn't bother with express or anything. Time passed, no package.. until i got a mail from UPS norway, saying my package would be sent for destruction the next day if i didnt reply.. I replied, and they said they had been at my door and there was noone home! So i mentioned the delivery instructions where it specified to call my cellphone.. She apologized and said they'd send the package back the next day... time passed i called them again three days later.. she said they had tried to deliver the package at the address and they said they didnt want it.. so i asked what address.. and it was two houses up the street... So i asked her why they tried to deliver it there instead of the place it was ordered to, and why they had ignored my delivery notification of calling me. She apologized and said it'd be there the following monday..

A week later i got a mail saying my package would be destroyed the following day if i didnt contact them..

I called them up again.. now four weeks after the supposed delivery of the package, ripped them a new one.. and the next day my package arrived, in my mailbox, by priority mail, not ups, regular post office!

seriously i had to laugh

Yes, there are a handful of terrorists who are Christians or other. The thing is, you don't see Catholic priests standing before their congregations telling people to convert or kill \"the infidel.\" I'm an atheist and no fan of religion at all -- for example, the way Christians try to impose their religion on the rest of us by trying to ban abortion and birth control and by prohibiting gay marriage -- but, apart from the odd psychopath, Christians, Jews, and Buddhists aren't blowing themselves and a lot of other people up.

Sorry, but I can't be \"tolerant\" of a religion that preaches my death, and while there are Muslims who don't live or think this way, far too many do, and where are the \"moderate Muslims\" speaking up against terrorists and the imposition of Sharia law and the way women are treated in Islamic countries?

The answer -- Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Wafa Sultan and others who speak up must go into hiding for fear of their lives. Speak up against Christianity, as I do sometimes on my blog (for example, against Christians who vote against allowing gays to marry) and a Christian might tell you they find you objectionable.

What few seem to know, and I what I only learned after I started reading about Islam after, five blocks from my old NYC apartment, Muslim terrorists brought down the WTC, is that Islam is really a totalitarian system masquerading as a religion. Here's more:

Infidel was a very telling book, about the irrationality of fervent believers. When you see how the women are treated in strict Islamic places, and the types of punishments that are doled out for minor offenses, it does seem rooted in violence and control.

But, none of that can condone the UPS driver writing 'terrorist' instead of the recipient's name. A Sikh is not a Muslim, nor is he a terrorist, and it's sheer ignorance and dumbness that made the UPS guy think that he was.

People need to educate themselves about Islam and not just mouth that we should be \"tolerant\" of all religions. If we narrow it down to the last 6 years here in the US... ALL successful attacks have been from non-Muslims. Face it folks... Lot's of wackos out there. No sense confining your paranoia and prejudice to one group. There are so many others you could be blindly hating on.

There are references in comments above to Christians blowing up abortion clinics and whackos shooting up schools, but the fact remains, Rick Warren (who I find despicable for his stance against gay marriage) and other preachers are not standing before their congregations commanding people to kill the infidels.

There will always be lone crazies who find justification in religion or organizations they belong to to kill people. Again, I'm no booster of Christianity. As a child, other kids chased me around and called me dirty Jew and said I killed Jesus.

I know many,many people are uninformed -- American Muslims among them -- about what the Quran says. And it's to convert, kill, and/or tax and humiliate the infidel. And murder apostates and critics of Islam, like the courageous Ayaan Hirsi Ali. And take over the world and install Islamic law (the New Caliphate). It's sick, totalitarian, bloody-brutal stuff.

If you've actually read Ayaan Hirsi Magan's, I mean Ali's book you would see that she herself cannot differentiate between what has to do with religion and what has to do with culture. While this particular Sikh is not a known terrorist, Sikh terrorist did blow up an Air India Jumbo Jet, planted a bomb on luggage of another aircraft which exploded on the ground in Japan, and so on.

So while the driver's action is reprehensible, it is not true that Sikhs should be completely disassociated from \"terrorists\".

Individual Sikhs, however, should be innocent until proven guilty.

i end up tracking a lto of packages and it's crazy to see what some of these UPS drivers put in that area. i've seen all sorts of racial comments as well as \"SLUT\" and \"BITCH\" several times. but basically, you just report it to UPS and they report it to the drivers supervisor.
