Nice jewelry makes me nervous. I have nothing to wear it with, and I'm sure to lose it. I'd much rather have something funky, unique, and cheap enough that when (not if) I lose it, I won't mind so much.

I have no love for diamonds, but thought a platinum ring was cool - of all the metals you can make jewelry out of, imo it's the most interesting. You need it for nuclear reactions, hydrogen cells - and it has a lovely weight. But then I found out how morally problematic (for me) it is - worse than the diamond cartels and environmentally terrible (something like 20,000 tons of rock for an ounce of platinum). So I started thinking that any significant ring I ever got would make me feel ethically icky..... but those titanium rings are great!
And what a nice variety of settings! And - according to some quick reading I'm doing now - titanium is used in desalination plants, which is a very fun fact to share with anyone who admires my ring. And rubies also contain titanium, and a ruby would look particularly interesting in these.... synthetic ruby, of course.

@oneandone: There are environmentally/human friendly jewelry stores. They basically recycle existing rings and reshape them into modern settings. I guess its too difficult to make sure the supply chain is cruelty free.

Also, Wal-Mart has a line called Love, Earth, that's supposed to be more environmentally sustainable. But the the thought of getting jewelry at Wal-Mart bothers me on numerous levels.

@oneandone: I've purchased three rings from them. One was a promise ring for the Ex, as this company does external engraving. The second I ordered the same time as the Ex's, and was the Abyss replica. The third was the Abyss ring again, as I had lost ~80lbs, and went from an 11.5 to a size 10 ring. All of the orders went off without a hitch, and they are a pleasure to deal with. Plus, if you compare their prices to most places, they are very reasonable.
On a side note, if anyone tells you they can't be removed in an emergency, they are wrong. They take a little longer, but they can be cut off by any emergency personnel, if need be.

I'm a girly girl when it comes to this, I like jewelry. However, I hate diamonds (they're kinda ugly, and they don't work with my complexion). But I'll buy my own jewelry. I'm picky and guys have no taste.
@goodywitch: When I got engaged, I did have a diamond engagement ring. That I wanted because I didn't find any other stone that I loved and wanted in the art deco style I found my engagement ring in. And my now-husband thought it was kind of bizarre that I went around to stores to actively try to pick out my own ring, but he was practical - he wanted me to have what I truly wanted, instead of giving him hints and then him going to stores to guess (hard for him, since I don't wear fancy jewelry. Ever). It turned out to be the perfect decision when I called him from the store and told him \"I want this one.\" and it fit perfectly inside his budget, it was exactly what I wanted (no one could've helped him find an art deco style. I went to at least six different stores to find it).

He got the perfect ring for me. I love it.

Besides, if you're the type of person who will (a) know the difference and (b) judge me on it, then I don't want to know you.
I keep buying my wife with all kinds of jewerly mind you they are not cheap and she appears delighted by it but seldom wore them even on those occasional gala that we attend to. Instead she wore those Avon pendant ($20 a piece)... I asked here why and she couldn't seem to give a straight answer. At least she still wore her wedding ring and engagement ring. This year I think I'll buy her a shoe or bag instead.

But I bet she has one of two attitudes for the jewelry, one she doesn't really care for it as much as you think, as ChildrenAreSticky (how true) has stated, or two she can't justify wearing such an expensive piece of jewelry out to just any old hum-drum event. Many people won't wear them either because they don't want to outflash other people or they don't want to risk losing it on something they don't see to be deserving of wearing something expensive.
EIther way, you need to modify your gift giving attitude and give her something that would be used more. I'm sure there are hundreds of gifts you can get her that would be more practical. Sounds to me like she has enough shiny rocks embedded in metals that can be used better elsewhere.
@slymaple01: Are you absolutely sure she's delighted by getting expensive jewelry? Perhaps you're not tuning into what she actually wants as a gift? For a lot of people, getting a gift is cause enough for happiness, but hen it is the type of gift you get them... personally, expensive jewelry would put a smile on my face, but I wouldn't truly be happy with it because I wouldn't have a use for it, and I wouldn't wear it because it's impractical. Maybe she's finding it difficult to explain to you why she doesn't wear the expensive jewelry, but because you put so much effort into the gift itself, she doesn't know how to tell you she doesn't want more jewelry.
And instead of getting her shoes or a handbag, ask her what she would like. And being happy you got something isn't the same as being happy with what you got. I think it's great my parents think of me during Christmas...but I'm not really jazzed at some of the things they get me.
I'm just being practical, really. Getting something you don't want and didn't ask for, and something that isn't your style is the same as that person not considering your personality at all. Frankly, it's more of an insult.

I'm glad to see other people dislike jewelry. Right now I still get people questioning if I'm married because of a lack of a ring. I got things much more useful than jewelry--a fantastic camera, desktop gaming PC, laptop, and best of all: a loving spouse!
The ethics of the diamond industry irk me the most, and the price doesn't help. If we ever decide to get wedding bands they'll likely be silver with actual precious gemstones, or just simple plain bands.
@Ratty: My husband spent probably $50 on my engagement ring, and then my mom made a wedding band to go around it (it's complicated) that was made from scrap gold she picked up at yard sales and pawn shops, plus a couple very tiny rubies and diamond chips she got from a gift certificate to a gem store. The whole thing probably barely scratched $100 and I have a conversation piece that's one of a kind.
And the rest of the cash went towards the great cameras (still and video), the PC, the PS2, etc. ; )
@Meiran: We spent a lot on our wedding bands, but we had a very firm idea of what we wanted, and we weren't willing to buy online with no experience with online jewelers. Was it worth it? Definitely. I think the next thing I might want is a very inexpensive wedding band, very thin, so I could wear my engagement ring again with a band. My wedding band right now is too big to wear with the engagement ring.
@Ratty: Well there's a difference...I LOVE jewelry. I really love jewelry. But the most expensive thing I wear every day is my wedding ring (carved white gold bands), and after that it's probably a $10 pair of earrings. I definitely don't walk around wearing really expensive jewelry. One of my favorite necklaces is a square diamond pendant that was about $200 and it was a gift one birthday years ago. I just don't enjoy expensive jewelry...the necklace I wore with my wedding dress was svarovski crystal that was about $150.
Now for Christmas and birthday and Valentine's Day I get comic books! Nothing makes hubby happier than me running amok in the house (not that much house to run amok in, though) because I've got a new book.

I worked for a jewelry auction. Not that I was a big jewelry person beforehand, but afterwards it made me realize how much people will pay for rocks.

Thank you for saying what I know sooooooo many woman think. The only diamond I own is on my wedding band & I had to fight the hubbie over the size of it. He thought I was insane because I said a 1/4 carat, nothing more.
He did learn though. For our tenth, he had a band custom made for me out of titanium, no diamonds, but it is beautiful. I wear that now more than my orginal wedding band. :)

Ironically if you go to China, the diamond counter is way in the back. No one there cares about diamonds or has been brainwashed by DeBeers. For them its all about gold! I swear there are more gold shops in Hong Kong than there are McDonalds and Starbucks combined.

Cubic Zirconia looks just like diamonds,according to rumours, 50% of jewelers aren't sure which is which, it is almost as hard as jewelers and significantly lowers the odds you will lose a rock worth $100s.
About $25 gets you a half carat Cubic Zirconia and you are in no way contributing to the \"blood diamond\" trade.

Expensive jewelery serves one purpose for women: to show off.
A woman who wants a big rock is a woman who wants to tell other women that she is special enough to receive such a gift, and that they are not.

You ought to hear her when I tease her about selling all her jewelry when she is gone. she almost disowned me the first time I said it. lol

Nobody ever truly needs expensive jewelry. It is all about the expense and showing off.
Even in good times, I find it absurd to spend that kind of money on jewelry when so many others go without basic needs.
In these rough times, think of how long a family would be fed if the value of that useless piece of jewelry went to a grocery gift card.
It would go even further at a food bank... or to feed the family that dug it out of the ground in a third world country.

I like jewelry, but I much prefer the cheap stuff. I only have two \"real\" pieces - my engagement ring, and my mother's pearls. My husband gets me electronics (video games, laptop, iPod, etc.) for presents instead!
The commercial is entertaining, but the whole time I'm thinking to myself that the woman in the video only has this opinion because she is so hideous. The type who makes fun of others because she has been made fun of.
Particularly the part where she mocks the guy for being boring because \"i'm a boring guy in a sweater\". Just look closely. SHE LOOKS LIKE HIM.

I like the fact that the majority of commercials she finds so disagreeable are all from one firm: Sterling Inc., which operates under the names Kay Jewelers and Jareds-the Galleria of Jewelry.
Pssst--little secret here...they both have the *same merchandise*, with very few exceptions. Interestingly, items bearing the same SKU number will be a different price, depending on the name on the front door.
I'm kind of lucky in a sort of tragic way. My wife had a decent collection of jewelry from her previous husband and it was stolen one day by (they think) a maintenance man from their apartment who was in doing something during the day. She realized that jewelry is a liability for the most part and doesn't really want anything flashy.
Her engagement band was about $380 and she's happy with it. I'm sure that if I had $2000 to spend on something flashier she'd like it just as much but I doubt she would like it $1620 more.
From what I gather, and I don't wear anything other than a watch and wedding band, jewelry is to impress the people looking at it, not the person wearing it.
For the record, my wedding band is stainless steel with a 14k band in it. It holds up to scuffs and still looks nice but not flashy.

Before I knew that my husband had already gotten me a ring, I told him that I wouldn't care if it was cubic zirconian because I didn't want him spending a fortune on my ring. He got me a red garnet ring with two tiny diamonds, and I loved it.
Any jewelry I ewar has to have some significance to me. The only rings I wear actively are my engagement ring, my mother's wedding ring from when she was married to my father, and my college class ring.

My mom is a huge jewelry whore & I don't get it at all. What is the point of having more rings than you have fingers?
I'd be downright PISSED if any man of mine wasted money on a diamond. With the money he'd waste on it he could get me electronics or a turbo for my car! Shit I'd rather have an engagement turbo than an engagement RING.
Anyone who knows me knows that I have NEVER worn diamonds, because not only are they the product of the bloodiest industry in the world, they look so pretentious & flashy that I immediately think 'shallow bitch' when I see a woman with a huge rock. Seriously, what reason is there to have diamond jewelry other than to show off? Makes me ill. If I ever get married, and that's a HUGE if, my husband better buy me a silver medieval style ring with a moonstone in it. I'll say no otherwise.

Maybe it's not diamond, but it's homemade, which should more than make up for that.
To be fair, diamonds are neat and useful. They're the hardest known material and have some good optical qualities. They can be used to cut things that you would otherwise have a hard time cutting. Or you can make high-end specialized optical components. Or diamond coat something to prevent scratches, if it matters that much.
But why someone would want to wear such a thing on their hand is a bit beyond me. I get some of the cultural significance and symbolism of it regarding marriage, but it's basically a fancy lump of coal. And yeah, the diamond industry is pretty questionable and basically a monopoly.
While we're at it, valentine's day is a terrible thing as well, invented by the greeting card and flower industries. If you need a special day to tell your significant other that they're special, something is off in the relationship. But at least cards, flowers, and dinners are cheaper than diamonds.
Oh, and how about the \"Push Presents\" some women get when they have a baby? You're also supposed to get mad at your husband if you don't get a big fat honkin' diamond for giving birth to his offspring. That is even more disgusting to me than the engagement ring racket.
it isn't so much her vocal delivery, though certainly she could give a lot more inflection, I think it's all about her body language. Other than the time she does the mock sign language she barely moves her hands from the side of her body. On top of that her positioning in front of the camera is just plain awkward; I get the feeling she and the cameraman/director are new to this and hasn't had time to get comfortable with the equipment.
The material itself was good but good lord she needs an acting coach.

2 months salary my @$$! There is no way I am spending between 5-6K and having Africans shoot each other to make DeBeers rich for a damn bauble that she puts on her finger and loses down the sink.
IF I ever get married I would try to go ringless. If not for her, definitely for me.
I like how everyone here makes the assumption that a woman who likes diamonds must be a completely selfish and materialistic whore, and those who don't are totally in tune with what all men want and desire in life.
I'm sure there are *some* women out there who claim they don't like jewelry just because it's what some man wants to hear.
Jewelry commercials are absolutely stupid, without a doubt. But spending money on something \"useful\" like a big, flashy TV, iPod, etc. isn't pushing the same agenda of luxury and excess? No one needs those things either.
@drgstrcowgirl: Luxury and excess - that's exactly it. I keep returning to the thought that one of the original purposes of the ring was to demonstrate that the man had enough wealth to afford such an extravagance, and thus would take care of his wife & soon-to-be children. So perhaps a large TV would work just as well for those purposes - except wouldn't a better approach be to show off your savings account or retirement fund or large stash of gold coins?
It would be nice if the trend changed towards both partners demonstrating their financial stability (or plans towards it) and how they will include the other & any future family members, rather than just spend spend spend on symbols.

Poor people are so bitter, hateful, and judgmental! Perhaps some people have a different taste, opinion, and preference when it comes to jewelry? Perhaps that doesn't make them materialistic, shallow bitches.
I love diamonds - not diamonds from DeBeers or Kays, either. I like colored diamonds especially. My engagement ring was $15,000.
Somehow, despite this obvious character flaw, I've been engaged three times to men who apparently thought I was worth marrying - though I've never been married because I'm fickle in love.
However, I'm 90% sure that I partake in altruistic endeavors more than the average \"consumer\". In fact, I devote my life to it.
