CNet has an article about a couple who saw the writing on the wall, recession-wise, and canceled their satellite TV package. Surprisingly, they are, in fact, still alive and not at all depressed.

Here's what they did instead:

"Using an existing rooftop antenna, James plugged her TV into the hook-up to get more than 50 high-definition TV channels over-the-air. The cost for these HD channels: zero."

Instead of HBO — Netflix for $17 a month allows you to rent 3 movies at a time over the mail and watch lots of movies on demand — including ones from Starz.

Hulu, Fancast, Joost, YouTube, and most major TV networks' Web sites offer TV shows and other video content for free.

They spent $600 on a computer that will serve as TV tuner, has a High Definition Multimedia Interface cable for carrying high-definition video, and an embedded Blu-Ray/DVD player, and can be used as a DVR. The cost of the new computer was paid off in about six months.

They upgraded their DSL to 3 Mbps downloads and 512 Kbps uploads for an extra 5$ per month.

According to CNET this ended up saving them $93 a month and they say they prefer this set-up to Dish Network. Something to think about.

You don't need satellite TV when times get tough [CNET] (Thanks, Klay!)

When I was a broke college kid living on my own, I lived happily with my TV receiving only one channel (the WB, and even then only sporadically) for two years. I'm fine to go without TV as long as I have shows on DVD and can somehow maintain access to every second of America's Next Top Model.

My husband, however, is a TV addict, so we have the huge 250+ channels (plus HD) satellite TV package. We can afford it, and it makes him happy, so I'm not going to complain about the cost. (Which, really, at $103 per month is not that bad.)

I know this depends upon the costs of cable and phone, etc, but I pay $130/mo for cable/phone/internet (30mpbs/5mbps).

$30 (DSL) + $17 (NetFlix) + $40 (Phone line for DSL) + $18 (HTPC actually capable of recording HD w/Blu @ $850 for 48 mos. -- useful life) = $105/mo.

Not a huge savings.. And they don't come out of that with an unlimited phone plan either.

Then again, they could just spend $0/mo. by going to their local library, reading, and not talking to anyone far away. They probably wouldn't die that way either.

I believe you can reserve a DVD from any library within your public library network. They will simply send it to your local branch and notify you when it is ready for pick-up. Easy peasy!

@Corydon: I live near Chicago and I would say that the average is something like 3 channels per channel. For example I get three PBS stations, where one has 4 channels, the other 3, and the third 2. So for example WTTW is channel 11 and there is 11.1 HD PBS, 11.2 kids, 11.3 create, 11.4 Spanish. That is how people come-up with numbers like 50 but honestly they are exaggerating a bit when they get a number like that since there are duplicates. About a month ago I went and edited my channel list to get rid of the duplicates and near duplicates. What I ended-up with is:

2.1*
5.1* 5.2*
7.1* 7.2* 7.3*
9.1* 9.2*
11.1* 11.2* 11.3* 11.4
20.1* 20.3* (20.2 was just SD of 20.1)
23.x* (the rest were duplicates of ones on 26)
26.1* 26.2* 26.3* 26.4* 26.6*
32.1*
38.1* 38.2* 38.3 38.4 (there used to be a ton of religious channels now only one)
44.1*
50.1*
52.1 52.2 (maybe these are 62.x, these are usually religious or ads so I never watch)
56.1* (56.2 is a duplicate of 11.3)
60.1
66.1

Four of these are Spanish only and I get a ton of channels from Indiana that I have not listed except for one (56.1) as they are basically the same a what is coming from Chicago. The news and sports on those are different though. Two of the listed channels are weather and traffic. Also this is all from memory. The channels that my family watch a lot are starred. That comes to 25 channels, take away the weather and news and that leaves 23, very close to your estimate.

I was paying $150/month for Comcast Triple Play (with one HD Box). But I need to cut expenses- we are having a child in May.

I dropped the CTP. Killed Digital Voice and Cable picked up- the Family Plan for $30.00. It gives us Disney, OTA channels, and Discovery. So my phone dropped from $48 to $32, and my cable bill dropped from $110 to $80.

I wish my town would get FIOS and then my bldg would allow it. It's killing that he only choice we have is cable. I do have to buy another HD Indoor amplified antenna. I had the Terk bowtie amplified one, and that picked up all the HD channels in the area.

I just signed myself up on the Boxee list for Windows. I am also looking into a Netflix subscription and possible that Netflix box.

@LiquidGravity:

Perhaps they are confusing DTV with HDTV?
Exactly.

And I say BS on "50 channels", here's why:

The article says they live in Oakland. I'm assuming that's California. Oakland California would have the greatest number of local channels available versus, say, another Oakland such as Oakland MD.

I just put in a theoretical location for their antenna into antennaweb.org, which is a website designed to show you all of the possible stations you could receive with varying grades of off-air antennas. Even by putting their location atop the highest point in the hills above Oakland (for virtually 360 degrees of reception) and using the best possible antenna, the greatest number of digital stations reported by antennaweb for that spot would be 23, nowhere close to 50. And most of those 23 are low budget local stations or shopping channels, not national network affiliates which would be most likely showing HD programming.

I've been without TV service for about 2 years now and I really prefer it. I have taken to watching movies or TV shows that I get off the internet. I also have an Xbox 360 so I installed a program called PlayOn ($30 one time fee) and I get access to ESPN, CBS, Hulu, Netflix, and Youtube from my 360. The Netflix on the NXE is much better but I really only bought the software for access to Hulu. It even cuts out the annoying commercials on TV shows. Also, I believe the Netflix in PlayOn doesn't require you to have a Xbox Live Gold membership to access it. Just a Netflix account.

I really prefer not to have a live stream off constantly changing programs. It cuts down on my vegging-out time because I'm not just staring at the TV flipping channels and getting caught up in the next show.

People look at me in awe when I tell them that I don't have cable but when they see the selection of shows that I have for so little per month they are truly amazed.

The only shows I watch on regular TV are LOST and Desperate Housewives. Other than that, everything I watch is on satellite. I live alone and would miss it too much. The TV's always on unless I'm not home or taking a nap.

And I read, write, go on the Internet, etc. while I watch TV. I learned how to do that when I was a kid and I couldn't decide between cartoons and a book. Sometimes when I'm writing, I'll mute the sound but leave on the picture. It's easy for me to lose track of the show but if the TV isn't on, I can't concentrate. My brain needs something to block out.

I guess I never got bitten by the media bug because I have always worked so many hours there just wasn't time to watch TV and radio interrupts my concentration. I never even owned a VCR or DVD player - by the time I could afford to buy one, I had lost what little interest I had. How do I spend my time instead? Reading, writing, making things...much more relaxing and you have something to show for the time.

@tande04: Nothing at all. But live sports are increasingly moving to cable. And as pointed out on Deadspin [deadspin.com] a cable provider like ESPN has gained the upper hand on negotiating contracts with sports leagues. They just locked up the next BCS contract, way overbidding Fox. And the advantage they have is advertising and subscriber fees from cable companies. Broadcast networks don't get subscriber money for being on cable/satellite, but ESPN does. Coupled to the fact that every league has started their own channel that runs games and the writing is on the wall for sports fans. Cable or bust.

In grad school my room mate and I decided to do this and we were going to the bar about 4-6 times/month (Monday Night Football, College hoops, baseball) and the bar tab quickly exceeded the monthly cable tab. So we saved money on beer and dipped into cable.

Netflix, Hulu, and iTunes can fill the rest of the gap.

@CuriousO: 50 OTA channels in and of itself sounds kind of suspect to me. I'm sure most major metropolitan areas have ABC, NBC, CBS, a public broadcaster or two, Fox and the CW. Maybe one or two independent broadcasters in a big city (although I think most of these were scooped up by the CW). That brings us to seven.

Through in a few religious broadcasters, maybe a couple of Spanish language channels and we're up to 10, 15 at the outside.

Even if they live in an area that's served by two TV markets, we're still just getting up to 20-25 channels or so, mostly with duplicated programming.

I just don't see anyone pulling in 50 channels with a rooftop antenna from anywhere in the country, regardless of whether they're analog, digital or HD.

I don't have $600 at the moment to plop down and buy a brand new computer. My wife enjoys her soaps (General Hospital) and reality TV shows. The package I have with Charter is OK, but nothing to call back home about. She gets to watch what she wants and I get to toy around on the computer. Our respective hobbies shouldn't have to become married, even if she and I are. I don't understand the appeal of her soap opera, and she doesn't get why I have to format the HDD again because I'm trying to create a new dual-boot PC with Windows and a Linux distro.

My wife hates watching movies repeated times and I can only watch a comedy so much (two times) before I have the lines memorized and I begin annoying my wife. I'm fortunate to have been able to get her to watch Clerks, Mallrats, and Monty Python & The Holy Grail with me. I'm not about to ruin it by cutting cable.

I live in SF and the local channels barely show NFL games due being in the middle of two markets and Raider blackouts. In Fresno, I'd get 5 games every Sunday and it was never a problem. Now it's usually 2, making NFL ticket a necessity. Also, I'm a Laker fan, and their games are rarely on network here. If there was a bar near me with NFL ticket, I could consider dropping satellite, but some sort of pay TV is imperative here if you care about sports at all.

Most if not all would need a high-gain outdoor antenna as well (the "rabbit-ear" antenna idea mostly sucks in all but the strongest-signal areas). Most consumers confuse and co-mingle "digital" with "HD" and we should save that discussion for a later time.

I'm so glad that worked for them in Oakland...

I'm not sure it'd be so great where I am, Lincoln, Nebraska. Antenna and rabbit ears only pick up the local stations, nothing from far away Kansas City or anything more than your basic networks, and PBS.

I mostly have cable for my computer. Every time I think about downgrading to basic, I get hooked on a show that isn't on basic. D'oh! At least I never got into the box needing channels like HBO and such. I've stuck with Blockbuster Online ever since I realized that, at the time, they were closer, and faster, than Netflix, and so have one of the nice plans with coupons that I can use for video games as well. (Try it out, either hate it and don't waste my money, like enough to play once...and am done, or then go hunting for the game somewhere cheap.)

I am glad for movie rentals, though. The urge to go to the theater (10 bucks plus goodies add up fast (I know, could skip them, but...it's part of the experience.), anyway, the urge to go to the theater goes away except for a few times a year.

Trying to watch a live sporting event on a pc internet feed is ridiculous at best. I pay a total of about $120 a month (average - more during baseball season, less off-season) for a sat package and MLB extra innings. I get almost every game that is played, every day in high def. Instead, I buy good used cars in cash and don't have car payments. That is a good way to save. New cars are horrendously overpriced and you pay double with a car loan. I paid $6000 for a 2000 A4 Quattro that runs like a top - no car payment = glorious live sports in HD instaed of squinting at a pc monitor or watching a degraded pic fed via the net.

There are plenty of places that offer live sporting events (NHL, NBA, NFL, etc) usually they stream in international channels from abroad to get around the legalities, since these leagues already have contracts in place prohibiting them from broadcasting anywhere but their current partners....works for me, and don't have to keep cable just for sports...
Granted there is a price...but usually $15 per year or so, so a great money saver!

Ok, Just looked at Cnet's article. When you click on the link for the pc they list, it's more like $900. Numbers still don't add up. And 50 HD Ch's turn into 40 BS Stations, and maybe 10 network ones if you live in a major market.

I was just doing this math myself and came to the exact same conclusion - paying $100-150 per month for internet and cable is a complete rip-off. A much better alternative is an antenna (~30 HD channels for free - only 10 are in English and not 24x7 weather, but that's still good), 3 Mbps DSL ($30), Netflix ($15), and Hulu and broadcaster's websites for everything else. Total cost, ~$45 / month for a much more flexible and mostly on-demand entertainment package.

Nice article and all but those are some lucky people in my mind. Like most cost cutting measures your mileage may vary depending on where you live and what point you were at before.

I don't have a existing roof top antenna. I played with a couple of set top ones and they were worthless. Even when I could get channels to come in I couldn't get the HD feed. So good for them on that bit of luck.

I was also thrilled to find out when I cut my television cable it resulted in my internet cable going up $10 a month (with no service upgrade) so my savings were already cut into just by cutting the TV.

I was grandfathered into a great Blockbuster online plan, 3 at a time, unlimited returns for the old price, and use that instead of the movie channels. In my case that saves a good amount a month, and we get what movies we want.

But the family has to have their news and hgtv and classic movie channel. So 4 channels is all they watch and are paying 60+ a month for 2 cable boxes and service. sigh...
