It was my oldest &amp; highest limit card, and I loved the free peek at the credit score every month. But it had a ridiculous rate they wouldn't lower, so it sat in the drawer, and now it's gone. 15 or so months of not using it, so I don't blame them.</p><br /><p>I'm not too worried, since I have some others (vestiges of college cc spending). But this is what I am worried about: In a few months I will be totally clear of cc debt (yay) and have been trying to build good habits. 1 card (with the best rate &amp; rewards), which I pay off after every purchase. But if all my unused cards start getting cancelled, I have 2 problems: 1) every once in a while I need to make a large credit purchase (international flights home for emergencies) and 2) I don't NEED as much credit as I have, but if I want to play by the rules and keep up a good FICO score, I feel I need some credit and a nice history of responsible use.</p><br /><p>So now it seems like I have to start cycling my old cards back into use, and it is an unneccessary headache to keep track of which card I used for what and how much to transfer, and I'm worried that my bad habits will creep back and soon I'll be carrying a balance on some of the cards.</p></p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(9323012, 'oneandone')\">Reply</a></div>		 	    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>                <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) -->            <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" >                 <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments -->          	    </div>        	</div>     <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments -->          	    </div>        	</div>    </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\">        <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-9289292\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=428567\"><img        src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-428567-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=428567\">zlionsfan</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2008/12/help-they-closed-my-credit-card-because-i-didnt-use-it.html#comment-9289292\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2008-12-05T20:04:59-05:00\">December  5, 2008  8:04 PM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(9289292);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=9289292');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>Discover's finally \"threatening\" to close my account for inactivity.</p><p>I can't wait.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(9289292, 'zlionsfan')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\">        <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-9289420\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=100465\"><img        src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-100465-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=100465\">FromThisSoil</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2008/12/help-they-closed-my-credit-card-because-i-didnt-use-it.html#comment-9289420\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2008-12-05T20:08:53-05:00\">December  5, 2008  8:08 PM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(9289420);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=9289420');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p><p>Same here. Also, FICO likes balances to be carried on less than half of all open accounts, so having a card constantly reporting a zero balance might have been helping his score, and losing that account may have caused the score to drop. All that can be fixed by paying down balances, though, or getting credit lines increased elsewhere.</p><p>All of the above is another reason not to carry balances - so your FICOs won't be affected if CCCs close your accounts or decrease your credit lines.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(9302122, 'MsAnthropy')\">Reply</a></div>		 	    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>                <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) -->            <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" >                 <!-- For each reply comment, recursively display any reply comments -->          	    </div>        	</div>    </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\">        <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-9289713\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=332258\"><img        src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-332258-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=332258\">rpm773</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2008/12/help-they-closed-my-credit-card-because-i-didnt-use-it.html#comment-9289713\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2008-12-05T20:18:40-05:00\">December  5, 2008  8:18 PM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(9289713);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=9289713');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>I have a Chase card I haven't used in 5 years. But with that $20 charge on my credit card I know where I went and what I purchased. and I don't have to deal with spare change everywhere, and I get cashback, which is amazing because I take the money and put it into savings, so it's like $200 that I got as a bonus for doing the things I regularly do with my money.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(9290715, 'pecan 3.14159265')\">Reply</a></div>		 	    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>                <!-- Display comment (reply comment, which may be a parent of more replies) -->            <div class=\"inner-reply-container\" >                 <!-- Loop through the reply comments -->        <div class=\"reply-container\" >            <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-9302860\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=255154\"><img        src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-255154-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=255154\">UsefulThings</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2008/12/help-they-closed-my-credit-card-because-i-didnt-use-it.html#comment-9302860\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2008-12-06T17:38:04-05:00\">December  6, 2008  5:38 PM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(9302860);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=9302860');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>@<a href=\"#c9290715\" rel=\"nofollow\">ChildrenAreSticky</a>: You actually believe that borrowing $200 from a credit card company (with interest that most likely starts accruing immediately) is a BONUS?!?!</p><p>You do realize that you actually have to pay this back, right? If you aren't using the card, it screws up their credit sheets.<p>WaMu did it to me last week as well. Luckily, it was an old card with only an 8800 limit.  I never used it because the limit was so low. I have several other cards with 20k-30k limits, so I use those to keep debt ratio down. Of course, I don't normally carry a balance. I do carry a small balance once a year to help my FICO score. If you never carry a balance, it looks like like your card is unused to the credit agencies. When WaMu close my card, my FICO dropped only 7 points. it should bounce back next month.</p></p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(9291000, '')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->							<div class=\"num-replies\">1 replies</div>	    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->     <!-- Loop through the reply comments -->        <div class=\"reply-container\" >            <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-9299490\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=224192\"><img        src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-224192-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=224192\">johnva</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2008/12/help-they-closed-my-credit-card-because-i-didnt-use-it.html#comment-9299490\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2008-12-06T04:29:37-05:00\">December  6, 2008  4:29 AM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(9299490);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=9299490');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>@<a href=\"#c9291000\" rel=\"nofollow\">AileenHalonian</a>: Actually, that's incorrect. The longer you have a credit card and have been in good standing with it (little/no debt, pay if off in full, not racked up a ton of charges you couldn't handle, etc.) the better off you are in terms of how you look to potential lenders. When lenders see that you have maintained good credit for a long time, they are more likely to give you money. If an account has been idle for a while, and suddenly starts getting used, we flag is as potentially fraudulent. It may be that someone guessed or copied the password from the original owner, and is now attempting to run up charges on his account.</p><p>You should be glad they care about this sort of thing. Chase raised my rates on an older Prime for life card that used to be Wachovia, then Bank 1, then Chase.  I had a stack of those stupid blank checks from CC companies lying around so I tried something.  I transferred my entire balance from Chase to Citi, then I took a Chase blank check that was good for 3.99% for life and wrote the check to Citi to pay off what I had just transferred to them.  End result was that in a matter of 7 days my balance on the two cards remained the same but my rate is now locked at 3.99% at Chase. I had this card for years with a high line of credit.  The reason I got the card in the first place was because of the great offer of a 4.99% fixed rate.  I never really had too much of a balance on the card, but always paid on time.  After they decided to double my rate to 9.99% a couple of years ago, I decided to just pay it off and use another card with a better rate.  Well, when I got a letter the other day stating that my account was suspended due to inactivity, I was obviously a little upset.  After calling them and speaking to a CS rep,  I was told that yes, my account was indeed suspended and would be closed in 30 days.  It didn't matter who I spoke to, they wouldn't reverse the suspension.  I thought the whole idea of being granted credit, was for it to be there when I wanted or needed to use it.  That is why you work hard to EARN the credit in the first place!  <p>So, then I asked the rep very calmly, \"You're telling me that, under these circumstances, with the financial crisis that this country is in at the moment, you'd rather give credit to people that you aren't sure if they could even pay their bills, than to a customer who's been with you for 10 years, with excellent credit, never had a late payment, and preferred to use your card exclusively?\"  The only answer I got was \"I'm sorry sir.\"  And people wonder why this country is in the financial crisis it is in.  I will NEVER do business with Capitol One again!</p></p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(9770111, '')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>");
