I was at Checkers Sunday getting a infusion of grease, and they were playing Christmas music. I asked if this was trying to get the jump on next Christmas, or it was a hold over. The girl said early for next year, and I hope she was kidding.

Back in college, I worked for Osco/Sav-On (drug store). We usually got our Easter and Halloween candy in 3-4 months before the holiday.
Let's just hope that candy is not left over from last year!

there be sale tags on that easter candy in the photo above... we all know it wasnt \"early arrivals\" but holdovers from the previous easter that you're trying to liquidate before their expiration dates come due!
@Oakie Pokie: Propaganda machine? Guess I should have made it more clear we got the product months in advance, but it was not on the floor until a month or a few weeks before the holiday.
The concern about old product would not surprise me; however, most people buy up the candy when it gets marked down to 50-75% off after the holiday. The only candy left was typically the stuff that never sold much.

It seems like the current trend is to skip every other holiday. First people went straight from Halloween to Christmas, now Christmas to Easter, passing Valentines day right by.
My wife works for TJMax and she says they have Easter, Valentines day and St. Patrick day stuff in already.
it's going to take more than oakie pokie to tell me whats newsworthy or not. The stuff isn't leftover, they just got it in was all I was pointing out.

@Onion_Volcano: Which doesn't mean they have to use it. I don't like Thanksgiving getting ignored, but I can understand it in the stores because it has hardly any commercial exploitability. But skipping New Year's? There's plenty of stuff CVS could be selling for that.

@waffles: When I worked at a chain bookstore we had no idea what would be on each Friday's delivery truck, but everything on it would go in the store. They could have sent us 4th of July things in September and we wouldn't have a choice but to display it.

And here I thought the Valentine's Day merchandise I spotted today at a Target in Brooklyn was bad enough.
I make it a point to wish the managers, cashiers, staff, whoever I run into, a happy whatever holiday they are pimping so early. I wished the walmart cashier merry christmas in september, and she was confused, and then I pointed at all their christmas crap. Really makes management look dumb when you do this.

Russell Stover candy is nasty any time of the year, but imagine it after it's been sitting on the shelf from December to April, after it had been sitting in the warehouse before that.
But on a positive note, it looks like one of nature's most perfect foods, Reese's peanut butter eggs, are on sale. I like them a lot more than the cups because they have more peanut butter in them. I wish they sold them year-round, though at this rate they will.

As the official buying agent of Keter as a person and a business entity, my policy is that any store that overdoes the holiday creep will get $0 in revenue from my clients for the overstepped holiday.
My New Year's celebration does not need Peeps and Mini Eggs. My Easter celebration certainly does not need Peeps and Mini Eggs that have been sitting around since New Year's. Either way, the retailer is disqualified.

I saw this and was kind of freaked, I work for CVS, and I'm in Indiana even!
Just so you all know, the endcap stuff comes from corporate so we don't really have much individual discretion on stuff like this. We have the exact same endcap in my store however it is on a back endcap in the very back of the store by the pharmacy, not the lead seasonal endcap. Our lead seasonal endcaps are new years hats, decorations, etc and then we have a whole other endcap dedicated just to champagne.
Sounds like a corporate ploy to get people to buy more Easter candy to me.
Greater availability of Cadbury Mini Eggs? Sign me up. Those things are completely addicting and it's a crime that they're not sold year-round. Sounds like now they will be.

The Walgreens near my office had a little bit of Valentine's Day stuff out -- not much, they still had too much Christmas stuff to get rid of before shelf space became available.

@Jabronimus: I saw some Cadbury eggs last week that were packaged for Christmas. Walgreens had them, IIRC.
@snidelywhiplash: Yes, I got some at CVS too. They are called \"ornament eggs\" but are exactly the same as the Easter variety. MMMM. I normally oppose holiday creep, but I do love Cadbury eggs!
At this point, I'm waiting to see which retailer will put up July 4th merch in January.

That said, I still don't see what the big deal is. Stores stock shelves with crap they think people will buy to maximize profit -- can you blame them? Don't buy it if you don't want it.
Seriously, stores can stock costumes for Halloween '09 for all I care. Party City does it, and I don't see mobs eagerly forming outside to burn the place down.

It's irritating to be sure but I just don't buy this stuff so early and hope others do the same. We don't always have to have holiday pressure, do we?
Man, not even the craft stores have Easter stuff yet. If it's too soon to think about making toy bunnies it's too soon for the other Easter stuff.
I still have about fifteen pounds of Cadbury Mini Eggs that I stocked up on real cheap after Easter last year.

At my undisclosed drug store in Las Vegas a shelf of Easter candy has been set right next to the 75% Christmas crap. And guess what, people have all ready started buying the Easter schwag.
Same crappy stuff, different wrapper. But people are buying it.
Christmas 2009 is right around the corner. Start shopping now.

That CVS has a lot of Christmas stuff left over. And it looks so nicely organized! I went on 12/26 to my local CVS get discounted cards, wrapping paper, etc and it was a MESS. Barely anything interesting left, and everything completely disorganized. No ribbon at all. Also no Reese's Christmas Trees left - they are almost as good as the eggs.

Yeah, I work at Walgreens and we're already putting Valentine's candy AND Easter candy out. . . I hate my job
I work retail and we just got our Cadbury supplies in as well. We're giving serious thought to putting them out next to the Valentine's Day. In our case though we have an excuse- tiny storage areas that are NOT climate controlled. And since we've thrown out stuff that even LOOKS expired (We have no problem trashing thousands of dollars worth of stuff for safety's sake.), it's often times \"use it or lose it\" when it comes to product sales.

I mean, I'm not above stopping at the ones on my way home to see if any of them are this one (or maybe it's a regional or area thing?) ... not where candy is concerned ...
@APFPilot: I tend to gag from sugar and fake chemicalness when I eat a Caudberry cream egg. Am I eating them wrong? Or is the problem with the eggs themselves? Everyone acts like they love them, and I feel like I'm missing the boat.
Personally, I'm partial to Reece's Peanut Butter Eggs (Both the big cups and the pieces eggs) and Robin Eggs, which are just malted milk balls with a candy shell.
@APFPilot: Corner of Brookville and franklin, right next to 1-465 on the south east side of town. It's a only been open for about 6 months so it probably won't show up on any internet searchs.

@APFPilot: They actually had \"Christmas Ornament\" cream eggs at the CVS near me (Dallas area) right before Christmas. I thought they might literally be ornaments with a string or something to attach to the tree, but no. They were just a different wrapper on the same Easter Cream egg.
