Here's how with a little patience, persistence and pricematching, reader Scott is saving $65.52 on his phone and internet service with AT&T:

Dear Consumerist,

Overheard a couple guys at work talking about phone service, and it reminded me that it's been a while since I checked for lower prices. I am currently paying 19.95 for the lowest speed DSL and $21.46 for basic service, unlimited local calling w/caller ID (number only, no name).

Online ATT offers $14.99 for the same internet service I currently have, and also offers a basic home service for $21 that includes unlimited local clg, caller ID w/name, and call waiting. I see an opportunity to save $5.46 and add services.

I call the internet services number (877-722-3755) and the first guy I talk to has to verify my # (even tho I entered it already), then the last 4 of my SSN. He says he has to xfr me to someone else for my request. that person asks for the same info (ph#, last 4 SSN). Still can't help me, offer apparently for new customers only (which to me does NOT reward loyalty), says she can see what options are available with a contract. Says she will transfer me to a diff dept, gave me # in case disconnected (877-722-3755, SAME # I called first). I am put on hold there, so I hang up.

I call back to the internet svc number, this time hit 0-0-0-0-0-0-0. Shortly, I speak with a rep, explain that my cable co. has offered me a price of 14.95 for basic internet, can ATT match? He transfers me to a guy in Billing, I repeat myself, he transfers me to Retention group at 800-288-2020. ( I used the magic words, "thinking of canceling, have better offer elsewhere"

There, I speak with a very helpful lady who says she can definitely take care of both of my requests. She is very quick and efficient, we spend a few minutes while she works her magic with my account, and I end up saving $5 and walk away with more services than I started with.

All thanks to Consumerist tips I read every day.

Thank you! Have a great day!

Always keep an eye out for other advertised deals from other vendors and if you see something better, don't be afraid of calling up your provider and saying you're thinking about cancelling unless they can pricematch.

AT&T is rude to you until you want to cancel. I had so much hassel with them getting my phone line set up and them lieing to me about DSL being avalable in my area. Then after finally getting my phone set up I never got a bill and they started calling about me not paying. I tried to pay online, but I didn't have the number from my bill to sign up for online pay. I just got tired of them and all their extra fees (and the customer service guy who hung on me). I decided to cancel and finally when I called to do that I got the nicest lady who offered to lower the price and give me a month free. It wasn't until I said I wanted to cancle that they were nice to me. I still cancled anyways because I was tired of dealing with them and just decided I didn't need a home phone line. Besides, I have had a way better experience on the rare occasion I had to call my cell company.

Just make sure that if you're going to tell your current provider about an offer, that it really exists. I work in retention for a small wireless company, and all too often, people will say that another company is offering this or that, and then when I check their website, it's not there, and the customer can't fax this amazing deal to us to match - some things are too good to be true, and the company most likely won't make an offer for something that will ultimately lose them moeny.

Even cheaper than Skype is MagicJack. $40 for the first year includes the gizmo - then it is only $20/year after that. I have been using it for almost a year, and have had very few problems. My Mom had trouble with hers after 6 months, and they sent a free replacement. It is good for unlimited calls 24/7 anywhere in the US & Canada. You can also pack it in your luggage, and use it from overseas to call back to the US for free.

I have "lite" cable internet for $15/month, "basic" cable TV for $15/month (channels 1-20), a prepaid cell that rarely costs me more than $10-15/month (100-150 minutes worth), so all my communication needs together cost less than some people pay for just a cell phone.

They cut 15 dollars of DSL (from $30) and dropped landline to $16 (from $20). This is great for me. I also finally had resolution from Apple on my iPhone, they replaced it for $75, the screen had gone and gotten itself cracked. Fault-unknown... Oh and if u can take advantage the unity plans by bundling- do it, it helps.

The problem with ATT (and other landline carriers) isn't so much the monthly phone price, it's all the dang taxes and fees that they tack on top of it. This story reminded me that I need to call ATT to cancel our landline. We have phone, DSL and Dish with them and pay $140/mo with all taxes and fees. The only time we use our landline is if DH or I have to dial into a conference call for work (rare). We are paying $31 for the landline ($19 + $11 in taxes & fees). ATT does now market Naked DSL on their website so we will look into asking for that. If they balk we will throw the Comcast rates in their face, which are currently $66/mo for internet plus cable. I hate Comcast but for the price it might almost be worth switching.

I was waiting until after the election so that if they tell me good riddance I can make good on the threat.

I currently pay $30/month for DSL from Verizon. It's a dry loop line, 3 mbs download speed. I received an email that it would be going up to $41.99 at the end of my contract.

I called today that said I would cancel if it went up and would find something else. They offered me $25 a month for the same download speed for another year.

It's a combination of being nice on the phone and paying your bills on time. If you are a good customer, and are nice when asking for a continued discounted rate you usually get what you ask for.

When we moved, I called to transfer service only to find out it would take them 8 weeks to come and activate my DSL line. I said I'd think about it, called comcast, and they said they'd be there within two weeks. When I called back, Verizon basically told me 8 weeks was the best they could do, so I cancelled. I didn't even get transferred to a retention line, they just let me cancel. It was nice to to have someone sweet talk me into staying, but at the same time I felt let down like they weren't even going to try and do something more reasonable.

I never have any luck with the "please lower my rate or I will cancel" stuff. I try calling on different days, asking different ways, you name it...I have tried it.

My latest venture was with DirecTV. We were one of the first customers to ever sign up so we had to purchase our equipment up front all those years ago, now, they call us to re-start...with a low intro rate...but they also want to charge me for new equipment and a rental fee...I can't just start my old equipment because that is not the special. All they needed to do, which I asked customer service, retention and cancellation departments all to do was give me the going rate for new customers and I would stay. They would only offer me $10 off per month and that was just not enough when new customers were paying $30 to my $50 including discount.

I have just flat out cancelled and after 9 months of no satellite TV, I am jonesing for some TCM and HGTV. Other than that...I enjoy the savings.

Or you could go for a VOIP service and save far more by paying just 19.95 per month AND not have to pay the ridiculous excise and other "taxes" or so called fees attached to your bill. I would suggest anybody who uses high speed internet not using VOIP is wasting money. I pay 19.95 per month (after taxes it is 21.80) for unlimited local, unlimited long distance, caller id, call forwarding, email forwarding, voice mail, call waiting etc etc AND I use it for faxing as well.
It was not a "special" deal, it is their everyday price.

Oddly, this reminds me of using company against itself situation I went through. My wife and I had Nextel phones, and were moving to an area where Verizon was the best provider around in terms of coverage. I can't tell you how many dropped calls we had on our Nextel phones after the move. So, after calling CS to complain and see if there was a solution(which of course there wasn't, since Nextel/Sprint still had coverage in our area, just horribly so). Upon a little creative thinking about how to cancel without an ETF, I came upon the idea to port my number to a Boost phone. Since it's still technically Sprint, they couldn't charge me an ETF and after 30 days, I was home free. We save $400 and actually about 60 days later got a REFUND CHECK from Sprint for about $70!! The only downside was I lost my number, but the upside is we had already moved to a different state anyway!!!

Yes, that is just you.

That's landline service we're talking about and if they drop the ball, it turns into a giant hammer that lands on their toes, HARD!

It pays to sit down with a cup of joe and read the telcom rules and regulations your PUC lays out for the telecoms to obey. Even politics are hard pressed to suppress blatant violations of regs.

@blackmage439: I did the same thing when we used Earthlink for internet services. They mistakenly sent me an ad that said $9.99/mo for DSL, which was not only less than we were paying but supposedly for faster speeds. I called them up, ready to sign up, and they started in about how the offer wasn't applicable to me. In the end they slashed my bill by a fairly large amount, but it still wasn't enough to keep me at a company whose CEO is a Scientologist.

ATT is required to offer DSL service to voice subscribers for $10/month. They agreed to offer this service as a stipulation for their merger with SBC to go through. ATT doesnt advertise this and it is very difficult to find on their site. It is buried somewhere in the fine print. Catch is that you must be a new customer and have voice service.
