Amy, a student at UC Davis, has just learned one of the lessons that one inevitably learns at college. Cable companies are simply not very good at what they do. Take, for example, the "finished" installation of some cable outlets in her apartment.

Amy says:

I know you guys like to rip on Comcast, and now I better understand why. Yesterday, one of my three apartment mates had cable installed in her room. The guy took 2 and a half hours to do everything, which didn't make sense to me, because we've had Comcast cable before so everything should have been all ready to go. And then he left the outlets in the other rooms undone, and even ripped into my wall (see attached photos). And this is the "finished" job. I'm sure my landlord will be pleased.

Yikes. You might want to consider sharing these photos with Comcast HQ-- be sure to request that the damage to your apartment be repaired and the outlets installed properly.

I actually had comcast install at my house they were great, the guy came in and my house is really old so it took him like 4 hours to hook it up. But he did a great job, even going into the creepy crawlspace that i would never go into. And I tipped him a bit and he charged me 40 bucks when it should have been 90.

@dewsipper: Being a previous Comcast employee, I can tell you that unfortunately that is the best that can be done. Due to rules regarding rented living spaces, and ridiculous demands of the renters, you have to find some way to make it happen.

The above is what happens when you ask for more wall jacks than you have signal for, and don't inspect the work before the installer leaves. Some of the installers don't care, but some do. Not all of it is horrible, it's just that no one wants to post when an installer does a stellar job.

From what it looks like, the guy took a bunch of shortcuts to get enough signal to one particular outlet by barreling all those connections through and removing the splitter. Which most likely means you have a fairly poor signal coming to your unit that was too much trouble for him to fix. Hope you don't plan on adding any more services/need to use those other outlets.

The tech that came was knowledgeable (not always the case) and even replaced all end connectors on my cables (several on my setup) to ensure the best connections and signal. Also, after the job was done I was again contacted by local cs and asked if I was satisfied that all issues had been addressed and that I would receive a credit on my bill for any inconvenience.

I know this isn't the point, but from looking at the pictures it doesn't look like major drywall repairs are needed. If she can't get Comcast to make this right, then I would suggest either a drywall patch kit from Home Depot (for like $5) and/or some spackle or joint compound to fill the holes.

As a homeowner (and a landlord) who has done a little bit of drywall work it's actually not that difficult to do. Chances are you can do it yourself, cover it up with some flat white paint and nobody would ever know that there was a problem there.

After reading some of the questions (I'm the girl who sent this in) like "Why did she let the cable guy leave it like this?" ...in my defense, I wasn't home. I was in San Francisco all day, and then came home to the hole in my wall! So I have no idea if the installation was free or not, who the tech was, or if the TV-watching roommate even spoke to him at all.

Admittedly yeah, the mess - barring the rip in the wall - wouldn't be too hard to fix (though I have no idea what to do with the wires). However, the cable is just for ONE roommate who wants it in her room, and I didn't expect to have to do any work in the process! Not fair, I say. And not professional on the part of Comcast.

@2719: He just means the nice symmetry you get when 'barrelling' cables together like that (a 'barrel' being what's used to connect two cables of the same 'sex'). I work in TV and in a pinch, it's not that rare to see two adapters on either side of a barrel when you don't have a barrel for that type of cable-- just convert both ends to what you do have a barrel handy for. RF, BNC, RCA, etc, it's all coax cable in the end.

FYI-- those connectors with the blue are sold at Home Depot and Lowe's. We use them at work, and I've got a set for home too. Supposedly waterproof, and pretty easy to strip and make with the tools in the kits. Seem to hold up as well or better than a lot of the crimp connections for us (these use compression).

I'm not going to defend the aesthetics here, but as a former real, properly trained technician, it is apparent by the pictures that an entity other than Comcast has been meddling with the wires [between service establishments] and that the apartment itself has a very common, poorly designed coax network. Again, a big stinkin hole in the wall isn't a good idea, but I can certainly remember explaining poor pre-wiring techniques and insufficiently-knowledged DIYers' bad choices to, well, insufficiently-knowledged DIYers and people who have 'saved' on their outsourced installation as being one of the biggest headaches of the job. I cannot explain, however, how facepalm inciting it is to show up to an installation [and this includes other low-voltage wiring jobs] and find wires twisted together, possibly with wirenuts, on a way-too short wire. On one hand, it's hilarious to think how somebody tried to save money, time, or hassle by using a 'more trustworthy' entity to do their install, only for a great portion of said entity's work to need to be redone, and charged for. Yet, very not hilarious is the fact that the work needs to be redone, and enough time is often not given to perform such work, and/or the paying customer does not want to pay for a proper install after they've unknowingly paid for an improper one.

Those "issues" can actually be taken care of in a matter of about 10 minutes. All of those jacks pictured are pass through jacks currently. Meaning they aren't being used as an active jack and it just jumps to another jack in the room. As for the apartment already having cable in it, as the tenant states, that means nothing if they wanted other jacks in the place active than what was active before.

The first picture just needs shoved in the wall and a blank wall plate put over it. The installer had to pull the work box out of the wall because the cable was too short to get a new fitting on it. The second picture is actually even easier than the first. As for the third picture, the cable coming through the hole in the wall plate needs the fitting cut off and and pulled back into the work box. Install the plate over the hole and voila, it's all fixed.

I am an actual cable company service technician (not Comcast) and I'd never leave anything like this nor do I think it's OK, but it's not nearly as awful as some of you are attempting to make it out to be.

I'm trying this brand new service that requires no cables! Yes, it's totally wireless! Imagine wireless TV in true HD! Best part of all is that you don't need Comcast, FIOS, RCN, Cox, TimeWarner, Roger's, DirecTv, Dish or anyone. Now hold on to something, better still is that it's totally FREE*! That's right! Nothing to install, no one ripping you off and destroying your house, no over charges, no ugly boxes** on your TV, no setup. Nothing at all! It's also 100% Digital quality and it's better digital quality than all the previous companies mentioned. That's because the signal is not compressed. Act now before the cable companies try and ruin this free service.
*You will need a TV compatible with the HD signal.
**You'll need an antenna

It looks worse than it really is. He should have cleaned up before he left but there are few things you guys need to know.

Installing cable in an apartment can be a pain in the ass. This apartment is not properly wired (not his fault, continue reading). It's designed to have splitters behind the wall-plates meaning one line goes in and it splits behind the first wall-plate, after that it goes to another wall-plate and is splits again...It's called cascading splitters and it's something that was done 10+ years ago.

The problem is there is not a lot of space in there and new fittings and splitters most of the time won't fit in. Also it's likely you can't have reliable digital or internet service.

The correct way of doing it is called 'home run'. It means you have one feed line going to your unit, most of the time in the wall inside the closet. From there you have dedicated lines to each of the rooms. No other splits are needed.

If Comcast is like other cable companies they do not run cables inside the wall (wallfish). Also inside wiring is not cable co's responsibility.

He probably had problems getting acceptable signal levels on the outlets you will be using and he bypassed the ones that you will not be using or did not tell him you would. Sometimes you just can't have a modem in that room due to 3 splits on the line...

Well while we are at it I'll share the one interesting bit of info I learned about comcrap. If you have a big house where the rg-6 cable runs are pretty long and you have a power booster on the video signal you need to then run a separate line for the cable modem. It seems that you cannot power boost the data line, only the video line. So if you get the comcrap triple play and the installer tried to piggyback the data line on a power boosted video line you are going to get terrible download speeds and a lot of disconnections from the cable modem.

Just an FYI..

So apparently - Comcast is BAD at Everything!! Worst at Customer Service, Worst at Billing, and now Worst at Installation.

A Comcast side note - Comcast opened a new CS office in the area - and it has a "closed-window" design (no person-to-person contact). Someone noted it had "bullet-proof" glass between the customer and the CS reps. So they "bullet-proof" their CS reps - instead of providing better customer service. Unbelievable.

As mentioned by posts above me, the problem is that many of these huge companies hire local contractors to do their installations. Satellite companies do the same. That's why I can't understand when cable companies criticize satellite providers for doing the very same thing. In my area, at least, I'm served by a local company and all their trucks and vans have the company's logo on it. They're all employees of the company.

This girl needs to contact Comcast directly and threatened them to report them to the BBB unless they make repairs. She should also get her landlord involved so she won't get slapped with "repairs" charges when she moves. Comcast can't afford another bad post to the BBB. I did it with Best Buy when they were trying not to honor my 1 year warranty on some computer hardware.

@NefariousNewt: Apparently you've never installed cable before. While yes, I will agree.. it isn't rocket science by an means-it does take some skill. It also can be time consuming by no fault of your own. For example-for Comcast to provision a DVR box in some areas-its a 45 minute call to dispatch. Or to add an outlet in some systems... you have to spend an hour on the phone to get the "ok" to do it etc.

I know it seems very cut and dried for most people and being in the business in the past reminds me what a hole of a business cable is...Fact is, it sucks just about as much as anything else these days.
