Goodness sakes people... look up the word Wench. It has a very specific meaning at the time when pirates (who dressed like this as opposed to modern day pirates) were running around on ship decks and in dirty slums.

A 'wench' is a serving girl, not a prostitute. It is not a sexual term in the context of a pirate.

Saw a store-bought pirate wench costume walking down the street in suburban Las Vegas yesterday on an 11-yr-old girl (don't worry, she was with her mother). Not the same model pictured here, though. This one was much shorter about the skirt and worn without the somewhat modesty-preserving thigh high boots. Sigh.

You've got to be kidding me - if this costume (or even it's title) deserves this much attention, the country is indeed in a sad state!

Look - it's a costume, it's cute - not sexy.... it would be perfect if one had a boy & a girl, one dressed as a pirate, one as a pirate wench.....

For god's sake!

If you want everything to be this politically correct, it should be called:
"Pirate costume designed to be worn by a predominately female audience"

or we could be real, and call it a pirate wench costume.

is it sexist? - sure.... deal with it, boys and girls are different. They know it by this age.

Is it inappropriate for a little girl - absolutely not.

Get off your high horses!

And just HOW old is the model in the costume? I'd be surprised if she's even hit double digits yet in years. Only when my daughters turn 18 can they be as wenchy as they want.

Granted the costume itself is not bad compared to some of the other trash I've seen (and worn when I was young and stupid). Pirate princess would have been a better nomenclature for a child's costume. Save the wenchiness for us women.

I think its really just a sad sign of how hyper-sexualzied people have become, and a little sick that a costume of a little girl being a pirate is even thought of as sexual. The costume is "pirate wench" because wench is a pirate-ish term to call a woman.

I am a parent of a girl child who is now all grown up and became a pole dancer and I blame all of the holloween custumes that she wore when she was little -- because at that time no other choices existed... (scarsam) ... The picture of the priate wench reminded me of my daughter she was a little girl she went through all sorts of phases (behaviors) dealing with her gender as did her the majority of her girlfriends. I affectionately called these phases "gender nazi days" as they all seemed to have an invisible gender line of what was appropriate during these periods. for example during one of these phases she would only wear a frilly pink tutu and red slippers and of course a magic wand was the accessory of choice. Usually these little girls just wanted to be beautiful & powerful. And have some control over their environments. For holloween sometimes we bought a costume but if my daughter didn't like the choices we invented one at home, which were usually have more flexable choices.

Halloween is a the perfect NORTH AMERICAN celebration to explore aspects of fears, fantasies, try on different aspects of our personalities or push social norms or comfort zones. Overall this is an important aspect of getting to know ourselves... BTW I have a little boy (10 yrs) and he really liked to wear red elf shoes with gold trim and little gold bells... As for my little girl whose all grown up now she's working towards getting her Phd and doing alright... Happy Holloween Everyone!! Have FUN!

There was an article about this in or local paper just last week. Its out of control and my wife and I both noticed it when we were shopping for a costume for my 8yr old daughter. I am no prude by anyones standard but this is just inappropriate for a little girl. Even more disconcerting is what we as a society are becoming when this is 'normal' or when these are the choices available. Maybe its time to go back to home-made costumes. In my opinion they were more fun.

Support the Females as Property Movement.

Save yourself, save society and save the girlies from the tremendous burden they have been required to bear since being allowed to enter general adult society.

Some historians believe the burden commenced in 1920 when females were granted the general country-wide privelege of voting.

Sadly, as females gained various rights and priveleges their inability to accept the accompanying responsibilities has harmed those females, males and society as a whole.

The emotion-laden generally irrational female of the human species has fallen short of adult expectations.

We must remove the enormous burden from female shoulders for the good of all.

Admittedly, there IS a very small percentage of females who ARE capable of bearing the burden of adulthood in our modern society so exceptions will be made for those few.

However, easing females out of the requirements of being full-fledged adults and re-assuming their roles of yore will be a blessing in many ways and will assuredly improve the female's general happiness.

Because unlike the majority of the american public, they understand that in context, 'wench' isn't always a bad word. All it means is a woman or girl who works for a living.
I live in the northeast so its cold on halloween, most kids have coats over their costumes so you can't see what they are anyways. The ones that don't have coats are stupid, or they have extra clothes on underneath the costume. Point of the matter is most kids here are covered up no matter what the costume is since the weather is usually around 40-50 degrees on halloween.

Schools have VERY strict rules on costumes here so if a kid came in looking like a slut they would probably be sent home and the parents given a lecture.

That costume is not that bad, it could be much worse (if anything, its the way its presented in the picture that makes it look bad), hasn't anyone else besides me noticed the high heels in the baby and little girl shoe bins at target?

She wants those kiddie princess costumes but all that fit her are "slutty princess". Obviously, I'm not going to let her go as that. One outfit she liked seemed more appropriate for Hef's Halloween party at the Playboy mansion. She's also into Hannah Montana and Camp Rock but because of how tall she is, those costumes are too short for her as well. I came up with an idea though. On the DVD cover of Camp Rock "Mitchie", the main character, is wearing a tunic and leggings, so I got a tunic that matches and grey leggings that match, as well as accessories, such as sparkling bracelets and a Hannah Montana necklace and big face microphone. I also got her sparly make up for the evening. We couldn't find a brown wig for "Mitchie" but we did find a pink one (like Britney Spears wears), so I joked with her that "Mitchie is wearing a wig for Halloween. That made her happy. She was just stoked that Mom came through and got her a "Mitchie" costume. She's also stoked that everyone will be wearing Hannah Montana or High School Musical but she'll be the only one wearing Camp Rock, and best of all, I'm happy because it's not slutty and it's wearable all year long.

"Gather any group of parents and you'll quickly hear about how the choices of costumes have gone from witch and princess to sexy witch and pouty porn princess,"

What you'll hear from any age 50 or older parents is how it went from creating your own costumes for your kids, to buying witch and princess outfits, to not caring if your 13 year old kids are having sex. Oops, hyperbole.

My mom made all of my costumes, excluding the pirate hook that one year and the vampire fangs that other. I did the bedsheet ghost once or twice. My dad would get his own costume made too to go with me.

I, as a kid, didn't give two shits about any of that (and regret it since I realize that was a very loving thing to do). I cared about the candy. That's all kids do and ever will care about.

Maybe the quote should read "Gather any group of parents and you'll quickly hear about how your perceived options as a consumer reflect yourself. You buy sexy costumes because the group consumerist mentality is that of a mature, possibly sex-deprived adult." Your kids are collateral damage.

A pre-pubescent girl is far more "wench" then some of the 55+ year old boobs I've seen squeezed into bodices at a renassaince faire. Besides, the costume is more Disney than Fredericks of Hollywood.
