Meet the McDouble. It's a double cheeseburger with one slice of cheese.

From Crain's Chicago Business:

The Oak Brook-based fast food giant confirmed Tuesday that it is asking franchise leaders to support the new sandwich, to be called the McDouble, which would have two hamburger patties and one piece of cheese.

Franchisee leaders are recommending their colleagues vote to approve the new sandwich, according to a memo obtained by Crain’s. The memo notes that the new double hamburger with one piece of cheese would sell on the Dollar Menu, while the double hamburger with two pieces of cheese would be sold at a higher price.

“The recommendation to add McDouble to our popular Dollar Menu reflects that we’re . . . providing our customers even more choices, with the everyday affordability our customers expect,” McDonald’s said in a statement. “The recommendation to adjust the price of the Double Cheeseburger allows us to continue to provide the same great-tasting burger our customers know and love, still at a great value.” Franchisees are scheduled to vote on the proposal in November.

I am in total agreement with you. Happy Meal/Mighty Meal for the kids, but I (only) ordered 2 Double Cheeseburgers for myself. Since they've raised the price and taken it off the Dollar menu my Family has not even eaten at McDonalds...none of us. Bad call.

A slice of cheese is more than 5 cents. every double cheeseburger they sell is at a loss of about 38 cents. they never thought that the consumer would make it a staple of their diet and some MCD's are reporting double cheeseburger sales of 60% of their entire lunch menu sales! at that rate MCD franchisee's would start dropping like flies within 12 month's

Sounds like BS to me. The Mickie D,s over here has the double CB for $1. So they tell me that by charging more for it they are giving me more choices? Making it everyday affordable by taking cheese away from it?

Come on Mickie D's, why can't you just say that do to rising commodity prices we either have to raise our prices or make the item smaller. See, no BS.

@Neecy: It's true that a calorie is a calorie. However, fat has a greater caloric density (by weight and volume) than other types of calories, IIRC. Thus, there's more calories in less food. However, if avoiding fat causes someone to eat too many carbohydrates (especially simple ones), then that is no good either. Fat is delicious, and is satisfying in moderation, so it has a place in a proper diet. Also, it's worth saying that adding cheese to a hamburger is adding calories either way. Less cheese = less calories.

As for the burger, I think that's a good thing. I have never eaten there in my adult life, but from other fast food burgers (Wendy's), I'd say that cheese is a nice addition, but that one slice is probably enough to get the job done. What would be nice is if they made the cheese they use sharper and more flavorful, so those added calories are worth it.

The cheese McDonald's uses is really quite gross, so I approve of this change.

Not sure what it is about the cheese they use, but it seems like normal American cheese that's had its "cheesiness" level amped up to about 11. Almost like they took the "bite" that makes cheese taste like cheese and amplified it to gross proportions.

I like normal, non-mutant American cheese, however.

Note to any Wendy's executive that can read: The double stack is awful. If you're not going to do the job right and just make a "me too" product, why bother ?

Look, I don't like price increases/quantity reductions any more than the next guy, but a company (or individual) has a right to run their business as they see fit. McDonald's is not a charity... they have a huge marketing/research department, and I'm sure if they thought that the double cheeseburger would work as a loss leader (ergo growing sales), or that removing one slice of cheese would alienate too many customers, they wouldn't be doing it. This is a calculated risk.

This is the same issue I have with the repeated complaints about the "grocery store shrink ray"... yes, it sucks, but the average customer has shown that higher prices will make them turn to a competitor, whereas giving less for the same price won't. Right now, the economics make it difficult, if not impossible, for many companies to keep on giving the same quantity/quality for the same price. You have to ask yourself what you would do it if was your business - lose money on every sale, or adjust the item/pricing.

The old adage "we're losing money on each one, but we'll make it up in volume" never works. Selling a billion double cheese burgers at a loss of $.05 each (for instance) still means that McDonald's loses $50 MILLION DOLLARS.

The DCB left the dollar menu in Central Florida just earlier this year, and though I eat McDonald's maybe only once a month or so, it's sorely missed. At least the McChicken is still there.

I think this is a good compromise to get a similar product back on the dollar menu. While difference between paying the 30-cent increase on the DCB ishardly significant, the loss of perception of value makes me more quick to consider alternatives like Wendy's. Take away the notion that a customer is getting a good deal, and you'll lose more total sales than the price hike will make up for.

I can't belive that everyone is falling for this trick gimick. First of all, why would you want to pay more for less. Get a backbone people and standup for America and stop being taken advantage of. Call, e-mail, and write to McDonalds and tell them that they need to keep it as it is or that you are just going to stop patroning their establishment.

Everywhere you turn these days, businesses are trying to give you less and make excuses as to why, whether it is gas prices, economy, or the polar ice caps melting. Gas prices have gone down (a little), and yet prices are staying the same.

So, lets do like they did back in the 70's and stop letting government and businesses try to make you pay for more and offer you less. Stop accepting that they know what is best for you. The only person that is going to take care of you is you, and if you fall for these shenanigans, then you should be taken advantage of.

I will officially end my eating relationship with McDonalds and will make my own juicy double burger with cheese using generic american cheese slices (tastes exactly the same, there is no difference) and meat from a local farmers slaughtering house. That will save me some money.

They couldn't really use any ratio of burger to cheese they wanted. 3:1 would be some kind of tripple light on the cheese grease fest. 2:0 would be a double burger and they wouldn't have the cheese at all. 1:1 would bring you back to the double cheese burger so you'd have to have a 2:1 ratio for a double burger with cheese.

Even if the Double Cheese Burger becomes a Loss Leader, its still worth keeping it, AS-IS on the dollar menu. The $0.5c for the slice of cheese could cost them thousands of sales, every day.

I know I usually go to McD's and order 2 of them for me, but the kids always want a Happy Meal or Nuggests or the like. If I didnt have that mental note that I can get my meal of 2 doubles and a Fry for $3, It would make McDonalds less appealing.

Yes, 25c more for the burger does make it less of of a value for me to stop by there.
