Sparkling cider anyone? Besides, and I'm asking this in all seriousness, can ONE drink during an entire pregnancy hurt a child? I am not a doctor, and don't know the answer, so I welcome some informed comments.

You know I just had this conversation with a few of my wifes' (very pregnant) friends.
Apparently alcohol is a no-no during early pregnancy, but in small amounts later during the pregnancy (third trimester) aren't harmful. It seems its really only harmful before the baby is fully developed, before the 3rd trimester.
My wife wouldn't take a drink regardless, but it was odd to hear the reality of it all.
On the other hand, is it something you really want to advertise with a national ad? I don't think so....maybe in France, but not here :)

Doctors may also recommend a little wine in the beginning of pregnancy to prevent miscarriage, or a little at the end to prevent early delivery - alcohol stops uteran contractions.
However, I'm not sure if the woman in that picture is supposed to be pregnant, or supposed to have her thumb hitched in her pocket, or supposed to have a weird hip growth - the perspective on that photo is very odd.
[*I can't find the damned cite. There are plenty of studies that say the exact opposite, of course. I think one problem with these studies may be false reporting - a woman may say she has 4 glasses of wine a week or less, but if it's self-reporting, it's more difficult to determine how large those glasses are, whether it was more like six...]

1. You don't know she's pregnant. And my rule of thumb as has always been, if you don't actually see a baby coming out of the birth canal, don't assume a woman is pregnant.
2. You don't know she's drinking champagne. Could be sparkling cider or apple juice or what-the-hell-ever.
3. Even if she's drinking champagne and she's pregnant, so what. Nobody ever got fetal alcohol syndrome because they're mom had one or two sips of champagne.
We've turned into a nation of worry-worts.

However, I agree with you and most of the posters here that there's not exactly a medical consensus that one drink of champagne is damaging. That's more of an American frenzy than a medically tested idea.

@nytmare: It gets its fair share of testing too, of course, in real life. But my sentence was pretty cracked out before it even got to \"studied,\" so fixing that to \"supported,\" which is what really makes sense, wouldn't have helped the disaster up to then anyway. Ah, Fridays.

Fair enough, but I would hasten to point out that \"We're having a labor day sale\" is not really a joke. Especially when it's a sale that ends on September 2nd. Hell, maybe she's just fat.
@Cupajo: I don't think the sale itself is meant to be a joke, just that her pregnancy is meant to be a visual gag on the term. But I agree it's not the most obvious thing in the world--then again, it doesn't look like the most high budget of ads.
@digitalhen: People aren't suggesting there's no such thing as FAS or that it's a picnic. People are pointing out that there's no evidence that a glass of champagne causes it, and that plenty of doctors are aware of that too.

Knock that ONE drink back and go for a test drive, weee DUI. She looks fairly petite, baby notwithstanding, one drink consumed right before driving could possibly put her at the .08 BAC and/or it might affect her enough to be dangerous.

If this were a photo or video of a real customer in a car dealership I'd be with you. However, this is an ad and in an ad if someone is holding a champagne glass it's a pretty safe bet that we're supposed to think that it has champagne or wine in it. They had to know that's what most people would assume when looking at the ad.
I'm with dragonvpm. A car ad is not high art or a complex novel. It's pretty much WYSIWYG and what you see is a pregnant woman drinking out of a champagne glass standing next to the car they want us to buy. In real life you don't know if she's pregnant or if that's alcoholic but for an ad this is very, very bad.

@dragonvpm: I do agree with the multiple fail. However to correct you on one thing, 1 drink would not put her at the .08 level. If she were 100 lbs, it would put her at max .029. Now, being pregnant, she's probably closer to about 120 lbs (just guessing), where 1 drink would put her at a max .021. That's assuming 1 glass of 4-5 oz. of wine. Drunk? No. Impaired? Probably not. But still really in bad taste!
(Note: Looking at the various BAC charts on the web, it appears there is not a consensus BAC level by sex, weight and # of drinks. Guess we should probably pull out a breathalyzer!)

My wife's OB said that the main reason they say NO alcohol is because people have no self control or self awareness. If you tell everyone it's OK to have an occasional drink while pregnant then a fair chunk of women will be knocking back a six pack every Friday and Saturday night, which would be excessive. A glass of wine with dinner now and then was OK with him, but you have to assume that the general public are idiots.

This is hilarious. People take themselves way too seriously. There's a fine line between an occasional drink and turning your baby into a poster child for fetal alcohol syndrome. Maybe we could call the OP's pic \"fetal champagne-alcoholic syndrome.\"
Also, this reminds me of a hilarious Jane magazine prank a few years ago where women wore fake pregnancy bellies and went to bars and got drunk and bummed cigarettes off people.

My sister in law works for one of these agencies that put together newspaper advertisements. They send the job offshore, where many times the worker simply grabs some clipart and adds it to the advertisement. In this case, it sounds like the offshore worker didn't understand what the American version of Labor Day really meant and it must have passed the stateside audit before being approved.
Now we know the truth behind the ad...

I remember my mother telling me that back when she was pregnant with me the doctor told her to have a glass of wine to calm her before bed. Also he told her that coffee in the morning helped with morning sickness. And there was nothing said about the bad effects of cigarettes. I was remarkably small at birth and I have sort of misshapen hands and feet now but this was in Poland in the '70s so I don't know what that says.
I forgot the best part, the same doctor told her she was infertile, and then I showed-up. Guess she should have tried a different doctor.

Alcohol and pregnancy are usually only a big problem early on. Like most things, there's a critical period where heavy alcohol intake can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome. It's pretty much the first trimester that you want to avoid taking in alcohol and other potential toxins. That's when you have a lot of nerve and brain cell development. After that, it's not as big of a deal and the developmental issues are minimized.

The opaque white liquid could be UZO, a popular, HIGHLY ALCOHOLIC Greek drink. It tastes like liquorice (sp?).
Also, you can drink alcohol while pregnant. A glass of wine everyday is good for the blood and the heart.
