I think the "pregnancy" looks like a bad Photoshop job. The bulge looks off center and her stance looks off.

1. Holiday car sale = party
2. Look at all those lens flares/stars
3. 0% APR - you'd have to liquor me up to believe it

but, come on, milk - out of a glass like that? my money is on some pina colada, a white russian, some other white mixed drink? I mean, come on, its party time and her baby is starting right - whether it actually is alcohol or not, this dealership is sending the wrong message. Pregnant women probably don't need to be out on a car lot in the hot sun, but I'm not a doctor either.

You know I just had this conversation with a few of my wifes' (very pregnant) friends.

Apparently alcohol is a no-no during early pregnancy, but in small amounts later during the pregnancy (third trimester) aren't harmful. It seems its really only harmful before the baby is fully developed, before the 3rd trimester.

My wife wouldn't take a drink regardless, but it was odd to hear the reality of it all.

On the other hand, is it something you really want to advertise with a national ad? I don't think so....maybe in France, but not here :)

There's obviously OPAQUE WHITE LIQUID in the champagne glass. It's milk.
It's obvious. It's right there in the photo.

If this were a photo or video of a real customer in a car dealership I'd be with you. However, this is an ad and in an ad if someone is holding a champagne glass it's a pretty safe bet that we're supposed to think that it has champagne or wine in it. They had to know that's what most people would assume when looking at the ad.

I'm with dragonvpm. A car ad is not high art or a complex novel. It's pretty much WYSIWYG and what you see is a pregnant woman drinking out of a champagne glass standing next to the car they want us to buy. In real life you don't know if she's pregnant or if that's alcoholic but for an ad this is very, very bad.

Doctors may also recommend a little wine in the beginning of pregnancy to prevent miscarriage, or a little at the end to prevent early delivery - alcohol stops uteran contractions.

However, I'm not sure if the woman in that picture is supposed to be pregnant, or supposed to have her thumb hitched in her pocket, or supposed to have a weird hip growth - the perspective on that photo is very odd.

[*I can't find the damned cite. There are plenty of studies that say the exact opposite, of course. I think one problem with these studies may be false reporting - a woman may say she has 4 glasses of wine a week or less, but if it's self-reporting, it's more difficult to determine how large those glasses are, whether it was more like six...]

@digitalhen: People aren't suggesting there's no such thing as FAS or that it's a picnic. People are pointing out that there's no evidence that a glass of champagne causes it, and that plenty of doctors are aware of that too.

As far as the drinky...she's not drinking it, she's serving it to her man like any good woman should.

I (and many other consumerist posters I'm sure) highly doubt that the woman is actually preggers. If so, then it's sparkling cider. Lighten up, FOR REAL NOW.

Also, this reminds me of a hilarious Jane magazine prank a few years ago where women wore fake pregnancy bellies and went to bars and got drunk and bummed cigarettes off people.

Fair enough, but I would hasten to point out that "We're having a labor day sale" is not really a joke. Especially when it's a sale that ends on September 2nd. Hell, maybe she's just fat.

Umm...she's not driving. It's tricky to tell, but one clue might be that she's not inside the car.

However, I agree with you and most of the posters here that there's not exactly a medical consensus that one drink of champagne is damaging. That's more of an American frenzy than a medically tested idea.

@dragonvpm: I do agree with the multiple fail. However to correct you on one thing, 1 drink would not put her at the .08 level. If she were 100 lbs, it would put her at max .029. Now, being pregnant, she's probably closer to about 120 lbs (just guessing), where 1 drink would put her at a max .021. That's assuming 1 glass of 4-5 oz. of wine. Drunk? No. Impaired? Probably not. But still really in bad taste!

(Note: Looking at the various BAC charts on the web, it appears there is not a consensus BAC level by sex, weight and # of drinks. Guess we should probably pull out a breathalyzer!)

Knock that ONE drink back and go for a test drive, weee DUI. She looks fairly petite, baby notwithstanding, one drink consumed right before driving could possibly put her at the .08 BAC and/or it might affect her enough to be dangerous.

2. You don't know she's drinking champagne. Could be sparkling cider or apple juice or what-the-hell-ever.

3. Even if she's drinking champagne and she's pregnant, so what. Nobody ever got fetal alcohol syndrome because they're mom had one or two sips of champagne.
