The double cheeseburger hasn't been on the dollar menu around here in ages. It's been $1.29 for at least a few years. That said, I've really begun to limit my fast food intake (counting calories can make you realize how truly bad that stuff is for you), so this doesn't bother me.

McDonald's food really messes with my stomach, but I do love a double cheeseburger... almost as much as I love the double quarter-pounder with cheese.
That's a real bummer for McD's as the $.99 price point is a real crowd pleaser. 1.09 just doesn't have nearly the appeal that .99 does, but it had to happen at some point.

I had this same thought the other day, when grabbing a couple DBL CHZ's. Probably the best deal going these days.
I will really miss this option if they axe it. This was my secret weapon against hunger, when almost completely broke.
My guess will be the Dollar menu dissapears, and the DBL CHZ goes to $1.50. I think they will move to a VALUE MENU format like TacoBell/Wendy's with varying price points. (Which would suck)

How about Wendy's, I don't see how they can legally call their \"Stack Attack\" a \"double cheese burger\" because, while they do have two small, thin, meat patties THEY ONLY HAVE ONE FRACKING SLICE OF CHEESE!!! Excuse me, but I call a double cheese burger, double cheese and double burger, no exceptions! Back when McDonald's had the triple burger, they called it the triple burger with cheese, because you only got two slices of cheese on it. Wendy's needs to give us all our second slices of cheese or start calling it what it truly is, a double burger with cheese.
@Methusalah: Oh by the way... that's only factoring in how much the franchise pays for the ingredients. If you consider paying the employees who sell and cook the food the result may be a loss (depending on how many are sold, the amount the employee is paid, etc.).

With prices going up like they are, it's not surprising. As I recall, hamburgers at McDonalds, Burger King, and the like never have had huge profit margins. It's the volume of business they do that has allowed them to make money.
That said, even $2 for one sounds cheap to me now compared to paying around $17 for a value meal here in Norway (ok, I'll admit to visiting Burger King a couple of times here, but never McDonald's!)

Our McDonald's (mostly) have the double cheeseburger on the $1 menu. It's cheaper to buy one of those for my kid and remove a patty than it is to buy a plain cheeseburger.
I'd rather cook my own hamburgers anyway...but I can't make one at home for that cheap.

They also reduce the menu to reduce the amount of wasted food (meat is cooked before you get there and held in a heated cabinet for about 15 minutes before it should be discarded) for much the same reason.

I think in the \"calories, carbs and protein per dollar\" ratio chart, the McDonalds double cheesesburger is a great value. I get one now and then when I need some food and am low on cash.
Plus they taste good.
I had one of those McD's double cheeseburgers (who could resist the price?) and GAWD, it was so salty I threw half of it away. Bleah!
For $1 the BK Junior Whopper is the best deal around, IMO. Lettuce and tomato on it, too. Can't beat that for a buck.

I'm not aware of McDonald's suffering any major financial suffering...they're just going to adjust their strategy to increase their profit margins. In turn, I'll maintain my strategy of avoiding their pseudo-food (most of the time, no one is perfect). ;-)

the mcd's around me started charging $1.49 for the dbl earlier this year (somewhere around feb.). that's the last i went there, so it's actually a good thing.

I'm always amazed by the comments I read here and elsewhere by people who shun McDonald's using one hand and stuff their face with a double cheeseburger using the other. Which is it? If the place is so awful, suck it up and stop eating there!

Note: I was out in rural Virginia and they had a bacon cheeseburger on their dollar menu. The dub was there too, but maybe it's a pilot program intending to replace the second beef patty with a slice or two of bacon? (Wendy's seems to get away with that just fine)

Well said. The taste of a sandwich is largely predicated on the condiments, anyway. My wife and I switched over to Gardenburgers, and pile on some lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, onion, and pickle and I can't tell the difference.
Oh, and also I live about a mile up the road (up-wind) of two of the plants where all of those wonderful smells and tastes are created. The funny thing is that, driving by, you always smell the same thing--sort of a vaguely sweetish tutti-frutti aroma.
My McD's doesn't have the double cheese burger or 4 chicken mcnuggets on the dollar menu, but it does have the mcchicken and fries:)

I once went to a mcdonalds in NYC and got a 6pc nuggets for something like $2.89. While waiting for my food, having already paid, i noticed that the dollar menu had 4 for $1. so basically, i could have had 8 for less than i paid for 6. I felt cheated, so in a fit of childish frustration, i fired off a message on the Mcdonalds customer feedback form expressing my displeasure at this pricing scheme when i got home to my computer.
To my eternal surprise, i actually got a call from the manager of that location (broadway, just south of 8th street FYI) on my cell phone offering a free lunch as a compensation. i was shocked. i thanked her, but never collected on my lunch. the call was more than enough.

Okay, math time. A standard McDonald's beef patty is 1.6 ounces, so you can make ten of them from a pound of beef. I see ground chuck going for $2.99/pound all the time, so that would be 30 cents per patty. 60 cents for meat, a dime for a bun, and another dime's worth of processed American cheese food comes out to 80 cents food cost.
And that's at consumer prices -- I'm assuming McD's sources their stuff for less. Surely someone must give them a bulk discount....

Call me old fashioned, but I still long for the days when once a week, Hamburgers were 29 cents, and cheeseburgers 39 cents. Maybe I'm a pig, but a day's meals (2 for breakfast 2 for lunch 3 for dinner) NOT homecooked for barely 3 bucks was awesome.
Has anyone noticed that the oil from a McD's Double Cheeseburger seems to get into your fingertips and not wash out? Seriously, when ever I eat one of those I can never wash away that smell off of my fingers, no matter how much washing/soap I use.

Back when our dollar was worth something the dollar menu was great when i would visit Canada. It was like the 65 cents American menu.
@Mr. Guy: I once ordered some kind of value combo from McDonalds, but I wanted it without the drink. The cashier said they knew how to ring that up, but it ended up being more expensive than the combo with the drink by like a nickle. I was pretty angry, since not giving me something should cost less. Or, I could have asked for a coke and dropped it in the trash can, which does noone any good.
But then, for about 6 weeks during the summer, I had the \"Mulan meal\" which was something like a small drink, fries, and 4 nuggets for a ridiculously low price (no toy). I'd supplement with another 4x nuggets for $1, and its was still getting lunch for like $3.18 per day.

I don't because the cheeseburger is this right ratio of meat, cheese, bun, and sauce. The double cheeseburgers throw the ratio and taste off for me.

@RabbitDinner: I think at some point wendy's used to suck a lot less. I used to eat there regularly in Maine through 2002-2004. Never had a problem with their food.
We kind of stopped eating fast food for a few years, then, after moving to california, and some really long work days and being too tired to think of anything better to eat, we went to Wendy's a few times. The stuff was unbearable. I really don't think I've changed that much in terms of my taste preferences, I think the Wendy's here is just awful.

The most common sense thing for them to do is make the double hamburger a dollar & charge extra for the cheese.
The same goes for the Quarter-Pounder.
That way they still have the double burger on the menu, but get an extra 20¢-30¢ for the cheese.

@sean77: No, its just that the mark up on \"soy\" burgers is quite a bit more then regular ground beef. Not to mention the higher cost of some of the other ingredients that go into the soy burgers. Soy is commonly used to \"stretch\" ground beef in order to decrease the over all cost of the gb.
You see it a lot in those microwave burittos that you get at like 5 for a $1. When I was a vegitarian I'd get those all the time because even the ground beef ones didn't have any actual meat in them. Just textured soy protein.
@ludwigk: I hate that too. The Arbys around here had their Beef and Cheddar combo on sale but since I didn't want the fries or coke I'd just get the sandwhich. Every time they'd point out that the meal was cheaper and every time I'd point out that if I didn't eat the fries or coke it was just a waste for everyone. They'd usually give me the employee discount to even it out.

I love the little plastic cheeseburgers that come in the Happy Meal. They still have little tiny chopped onions on them, which I love. The Happy Meal is exactly the right amount of food for me, so nothing goes to waste. If I can't go home for lunch I sometimes go to McD's and get a Happy Meal. I won't miss the cheap Double Cheeseburger because I never could eat the whole thing, so I stopped getting it.
And if I don't like the toy, I give it to my coworker for her little girl. :)

But your tastebuds CAN change or be recalibrated. I gave up eating processed food. Eating stuff like Doritos or Oreos or a Big Mac is is big disappointment now. Everything tastes WAY too salty or sweet, whereas it used to taste delicious. Not to be gross, but I can tell if something has artificial flavoring because it repeats on me if it does. I was burping \"flame-broiled\" for a whole afternoon after eating a Whopper.
This would be a better place to use the product shrink-ray... fast food isn't worth it after the second bite anyway

I work with people who eat at McD's pretty much everyday If not there then some other sort of fast food. Pretty much all of them are obese also! This is TMI,but you don't want to follow them in the bathroom either. That stuff is terrible for you!
I'll admit I eat there MAYBE once or twice a year,but only when I'm sick of everything else.
They can just get rid of the bun and give you a plastic glove (that they aren't wearing anyway!) to hold onto the \"meat\" patties.
Seriously. You guys are making me crave McDonald's right now.
The day finally came last week when they stopped doing Doubles for $1 in Austin last week. Hungover as hell, I journeyed to the McDonald's in search of instant relief, and was blindsided by the $1 Double being replaced by a single. :(

Wow, 100 comments and no one mentioned the secret trick to asking for a \"Double Cheeseburger Like A Mac\"? For years now I have been asking for it and every mcdonalds does it. Pretty much you get a big mac, sans the middle peice of bread, for 1/5th the price of the actual big mac.
If they got rid of the dollar menu at McDs (the 1.39 menu in canada btw), I think I would just stop eating there.

I find it odd that they're singling out the double cheeseburger - isn't the McChicken or the 4 pack of nuggets costing more? I can't see fries jumping in price due to how their costs are frequently offset by drinks, but you'd think it was all the meat items, not just one...

I just had this for 'dinner.' $1 DCB, $0.99 Xlarge soda, and a $1.79 large fry. $4.07 w/ tax.
I'm gettin' fat while it's cheap to help me last through the lean decades ahead. =/
All I like is the fries, anyway.
@Scazza: You mean add lettuce and tomato w/ special sauce? They charge $0.40 for the tomato, $0.35 for lettuce and $0.25 for special sauce, $0.65 for a sesame seed bun substitution, and at my McD's anyway. I thin that makes it $0.10 cheaper with more chance to screw up the order. I think that $0.10 pays for the cardboard box.
At both the McDs I have been to in the past month, it's been $1. The 4 nuggets too. What else would I get? If they raise it up, they better start a special on something else or mail out more BOGO free coupons or my money and ravaged digestive tract will be going elsewhere.

@stevegoz: a dime for the bun? Where do you live? Where I am even the cheap buns are $1.49 for 8, that comes out to almost double that. And generic sliced american cheese is about the same.

WHAT? They use actual BEEF? I thought it was a mixture of horse meat & plastic in those burgers.
So it's half the price of the one here in the UK and probably bigger too? Makes me feel great.

I think they will keep it since they have conditioned the public to cheap prices that don't meet costs for so long...They could go the good old American Way route (like the airlines for example) and subsidize the \"demands\" of the public with employee pay & benefits cuts, rather than passing on increases...'Cause darnit we NEED burgers and air travel

What killed me is it was usually the folks who drove up in expensive cars that would order water and then pour soda. My boss had a theory that it was how they could afford their car.

There's beginning to be a rumor about a significant increase in Federal Taxes on fast food anyways, in the same vein as tax rates on cigarettes, alcohol and gas. I can't seem to find the link at the moment...
Anyways, the story is that the Fed. is looking to offset increases in entitlement spending in programs such as Medicare and Medicaid particularly given increasing obesity rates, which are contributing to higher healthcare costs generally.
So - eat up while you can!
I've always wondered why the double cheeseburger was $1 when a single cheeseburger was $.99. I get them on occasion. If they go up 20 or 30 cents, no biggie.
@Methusalah: I heard from a store manager (in the greater Boston area) that they DO take a loss on selling the double cheeseburger on the dollar menu. They can't wait until McD corporate allows them to remove it and actually make a few cents on the damn thing!

At least the BK Jr whopper tastes somewhat like a real hamburger. I wish we had WhatABurger here in Indiana. Have them in Arizona and they are good. Also, El Pollo Loco would be great.
@DrJimmy: See? This food poisoning subtext bothers me much more than the price increase. The reason I ask is I remember taking my niece to get a tetnus shot last year and her pediatrician made a point of asking me if she ate at McDonald's (and then after a pause, added \"or other fast food\"). I told her she did a few times a year and the pediatrician seemed to stress that she should get a booster shot for Hep A.
All the anecdotal tales of intestinal woes after eating at McD's may be telling.

Wow, just looked at the picture. How common are those double drive thrus? Our town's new replacement McD's has one and I'm surprised that it hasn't caused more road rage like hilarity.
They're pretty common, but it's usually a renovation thing after business has proved to require it @BlazerUnit
And I think the idea is that most people who will get the burger will buy a drink, even the cheapass dollar drink. The goal is to get them coming in to sell them on something else.
I was at a McDonalds yesterday here in Seattle WA, and the Dollar menu featured a \"double HAMBURGER\" for a buck. The double cheeseburger was $1.29.
I had the double hamburger, it was OK but I missed the cheese. I'm just not sure it's worth the other 29 cents.
