The Trexlertown, PA location was a new store, in an interior location of a new strip mall, the same strip has a Panera Bread at the end, a Chik-Fil-A standalone store, and now across the street, the bane of new expansion, another Dunkin Donuts. We now have 3 DDs on the same road equally 1 mile apart. The staff and quality of that store even though it was stuck in the middle was much better than the bigger Macungie, PA store which is further away from businesses, but the only competition is a Wawa convenience store and McDonalds (right next door).

You know if a Starbucks closest to a USA Cycling training center is closing, you have issues.

As for stores, I was in San Fran a few weeks ago, and was totally surprised that these 3 SBs in 2 blocks is somehow profitable and safe from store closure. Looks like their store placement / marketing department is still bungling things up even in their downturn.

Same deal with Malvern,Arkansas. I knew Starbucks was about done when they put a store there. It hasn't been open for even close to a year, and it got the axe. I go by there about once a week, and it seemed nobody was ever in there. I live in the next town down the interstate, and everyone was SO upset that Malvern got a Starbucks even though there's one in the student union of one of the colleges here.

I like Starbucks, but this part of the world isn't ready for high-priced coffee yet.

Looking at the closings in Charlotte, NC... well, I could have told star bucks.

wilkinson blvd: Mainly a lower income neighborhood that may very well become gentrified in the next decade or so... but it hasn't happened yet. The street the Starbucks is on is full of mainly empty big boxes and the nicest location on the street actually is the strip mall the Starbucks is in. Too bad the strip mall doesn't even face the street.

northlake commons: In a open-air mall full of second tier retailers & restaurants near the brand new Northlake Mall. Very nice location... except there's already a Starbucks in the main mall complex nestled right between Abercrombie & Fitch and American Eagle

piedmont town center: in a new complex, but far too close to the locations near Southpark mall (The mall and the Harris Teeter at Morrocroft Village)

worthington: Great Location. It's in a large professional business community (Street names like IBM Dr, Digital Drive, and Network Ln should tell you what kind of companies are there.) Too bad there's three other locations in driving distance that don't require you to drive off the main road.

providence rd & sharon amity rd: Surprised me a little until I remembered there's another one right up Sharon Amity.

Of note is the fact that these all seem to be locations that were opened in the last year. None of the older locations seem to have been hurt. Now, if only someone will explain to me why the Target in Kannapolis (pretty rural area near Concord, NC that's best known for not making Cannon towels anymore) has a starbucks inside and a starbucks in the parkinglot, but somehow neither of those got closed.

Yep, the franchise locations here are easy to spot, they tend to be small and to cohabit with Jamba Juice. Weird, when you think about it, we also have another "odd couple" in the Pizza Hut/Taco Bell pairing, but I digress.

I am not surprised that the SB in a luxury condo is closing, but I am surprised greatly that a big "concept" location that's less than a year old ... and theoretically SB's "flagship" in Hawaii and a much-touted improvement/quasi-anchor in its locale is.

Yep about Peet's ... same for Seattle's Best. Either of which is better than SB or that "Coffee Bean" thing that's been running rampant. I keep hoping whoever bought the Peet's rights in Hawaii will expand, then again, maybe they're just helping me economize. ;)

i 55 & main 1903 main st madison ms

The word around here is that the mayor of Madison, Mississippi (aka the rich, snooty suburb of Jackson) personally called Starbucks and asked them to reconsider. The rich folk just can't bare to go without their $4 cup of coffee. This is a city where businesses are not allowed unless they meet the mayor's demands for what the building will look like and they all end up looking like mini expensive cathedrals. She holds a tight reign. You ever seen a Wal-Mart that looks like a church? Come to Madison. I remember Wal-Mart finally giving up and walking away from Madison but then they finally bowed down to her demands and built their building like she wanted it. No cookie cutter Wal-Mart here, that's for sure. And the Subway sandwhich shop.. stained glass, wood from Brazil, it's an amazing building.. for cheap cold cuts. Gas stations with huge pillar columns on the front. That's Madison.

I've occasionally gone to the soon to be closing store at Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville, IA.

That mall is pretty busy, but the Starbucks has a weird little spot sort of tucked away in a corner where it's easy to overlook and it's been pretty empty every time I've been in there. There's also Starbucks in the Barnes & Noble at the other end of the mall and a Caribou Coffee in one of the mall out-parcels, and another Starbucks about a mile from the mall, and at least two dozen local places scattered around the Iowa City/Coralville area. So tbere's no danger of anyone going to sleep in this town. :-)

I just looked over the Oregon list (I live in Portland).

-The Tanasbourne Haggens and the Cornell & 188th locations are not too far from each other.
-The Hawthorne and 20th and Division locations are pretty close to each other as well (from the Hawthorne location, all you have to do is go up a block or two, turn onto 20th, and the Division one is at the next signal). Also, the opening of the 20th and Division location was met with a lot of opposition - I even remember hearing in the news that it got vandalized right after it opened.

I'm a little surprised that the location at Burnside and 242nd in Gresham got spared. It's a former Coffee People drive-thru (that also used to be a Hot N Now in their days of mass expansion in the 90's), and it has no indoor seating, just some tables and chairs outside. There's a Starbucks with a drive thru and indoor seating just east on Burnside, a short walk or drive away. There's also a Starbucks in the Safeway near Burnside and Division.

Wow, if this list is correct, Starbucks is leaving multiple close-proximity locations with mediocre traffic (that could be consolidated) in downtown Honolulu ... while closing a brand-new mega-place that it built out and opened less than a year ago that has been absolutely packed every time I've gone by. (The one that's closing down the street from it makes sense.)

Maybe we will see a second Peet's on Oahu?

They're closing the one right next to me... but that's okay, there's already another one right next to it. Three if you count the ones in grocery stores.

I can honestly see why they're closing this one, even though it's been there 10 years now - the little mall it's part of used to be busy and popular, then Fins moved out and the comic store moved out and and and long story short it's a sad little mall now. That store is never very busy compared to the one across the street which is always packed.

Considering some of the locations of the CT ones that're set to wither and die, it's hardly surprising.

Windsor Locks is right near the airport, but nowhere NEAR being along the way (it's near the tail end of all the long-term parking places, etc.), and Coldstone already closed their store there. Only tenant in that strip mall's Quizno's, and I can't imagine they'd be long for it. East Windsor's only other tenant in THAT strip mall's a credit union. Strangely, both of 'em have drive-thru, so there goes that theory.

South Windsor's in one of them "lifestyle center" faux-downtown malls. There's not a whole lot of coffee-only competition, but there is an Atlanta Bread Company there (oddly, the only one left in the state). Then again, it's right near Manchester, where they just built a new one (with drive-thru), so take that as you will.

Fairfield's near Fairfield University, but it's also a pain the ass to get in and out; it's right near a light, on the wrong side of the street (if traffic's backed up at a red light, you ain't gettin' in or out), and Kings Highway's pretty busy. Don't know about Hartford, but my friend goes there and says "everyone there's so nice".

But as far as I know offhand, South Windsor's the only one that might be considered closing redundant stores. The rest of these probably just aren't pulling their weight, and seeing as they can't legally invade Dunkin Donuts... ;)

@Imaginary_Friend - Texas housing crisis? Texas has been one of the least affected states in the country (particularly when you take into account the number of large urban centers). There was really never a housing bubble and so the market didn't crash. There has been a reduction in the number of new homes, and certain areas have declined, but its nothing like what's been going on in California and New York

Honestly though, I don't think most areas in Oregon are overpopulated by Starbucks, at least outside Portland. In Salem there are more other coffee shops, a lot of them independent. There are also chains like Dutch Bros. in town. By the way, Dutch Bros isn't any better than Starbucks. And if you like whipped cream on your drinks, they use the whipped cream in a can rather than the real actually whipped cream that Starbucks uses.

@ConsumptionJunkie: The Bux in the Promenade is hardly a year old... Shame. The location does suck though, so I could see closing that one.

I'm glad the new one in Lisle by my office is staying open, its actually making the jerks at the dunkin' donuts across the street a little more friendly now that they have some competition.

Darn. No stores in Boston. In Downtown Crossing there are four SBUX within a short walking distance of one another. If you stand on Washington St., across from Borders, you can see two SBUX at the same time.

What is this, a Starbucks bust?

First, housing, then oil (possibly), and now starbucks. Build too many starbucks quickly, and close them because you can't financially sustain them. what a plan! They are closing 2 stores in my hometown, that are less than a mile apart. Trying to get us hooked to starbucks, and now, we cant em no more.
