I wait until I have a package to send and then dump out all the "old" stamps to mail it. I prefer to use a roll of stamps, as I have a nice container for them and it's easier to find than a flat piece of paper. Too bad the post office won't sell "forever" stamps in a roll format, must have the presses tied up with the 1,783rd interation of an American flag stamp - shouldn't that printing be farmed out to China like real American flags are??

So back to the post office again for 57 1-cent stamps to add to the rest of my 100 41-cent roll so they're useful a little longer for mailing letters......

I think that one thing people don't realize about "junk" mail is that it actually pays for keeping the cost of first class mail down for the majority of Americans. Yes, direct marketers are allowed to mail in lower postage bracket, but the decreased cost per piece is more than made up in the incredible volume that is pushed out.
Also, the advances made in the USPS over the last 10 years have also been paid for by junk mail. The increases in first class postage are small when compared with the increases seen in junk (or third class) mail.
You can liken junk mail to commercials on TV. Without commercials, everyday TV channels would cost as much as HBO.

Just my 2 cents.

I know that those temporary generic "First Class" stamps they used to issue before a postage hike could only be used domestically. I'm guessing that the "Forever" stamps likewise can only be used for domestic mailings.

@zentex: I recently went to a conference in which I learned a lot about the postal rates going up, and this is what I found out:

The prices will continue to go up every year in accordance with the consumer price index, so expect an announcement every March, followed by postal rate reform every May.

I left the conference a little irritated that the post office is walking, talking and acting like a business, when it's really a government run not-for-profit agency.

I say if they truly want to start acting like a business, they need to open up the door for competitors (i.e. FedEx, UPS, DHL) to get in on the action. Otherwise, they are simply monopolizing the market, and it's not fair to the end consumer.

Not much happened in that booth. Back in the 80's and early 90's, there were few offsite bill pays and no meaningful internets. In my city, if you wanted to pay your bills without a stamp, you had to show up at the phone or electric co. in person, where there was a booth for paying bills. People still mailed stuff. Postage has risen at a rate slower than inflation. Thus a previous Consumerist article (I think) about how the Forever stamp is counterproductive.

Less than half a dollar to physically take a letter and have it delivered to the doorstep of anyone in the entire US still sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Read down a few articles and start lobbying with the direct marketing association if you want to fight the perpetual, glacier-like rise of postage costs.

Oh, to answer your question, though. NEVER.
