and why arent they just admitting that they had a problem and fix it?
Conagra has had other issues with food processing issues in the past, with cleanliness and safety of the food produced by them. Just read, "fast food planet"

Peanuts are roasted, killing any salmonella. Then they are cooked again as they are ground into a paste and mixed with other ingredients to become peanut butter. Then, at some point between being poured into a jar and the tamper seal being glued in place, ConAgra wants us to believe a little bit of salmonella-bearing mist drifted across the product -- enough to sicken 400 people?
That's simple enough to fix. Patch the roof and rewire the sprinklers.
And it's easier to get the gullible public to swallow, than the idea someone didn't wash his hands after using the restroom, then unknowingly transferred fecal matter to the machines processing the peanut butter.
And ConAgra is more likely to get lawsuits settled when an act of God is involved, than it is when the cause is an act of human stupidity.
I prefer Jif, by the way. Oddly enough, the store where I shop stopped stocking it, too. And all the other brands as well, none of which were manufactured at ConAgra's plant.
