A leaky roof was the source of a salmonella outbreak that sickened 400 people. From the AP:

Childs said the company traced the salmonella outbreak to three problems at its Sylvester, Ga., plant last August.

The plant's roof leaked during a rainstorm, and the sprinkler system went off twice because of a faulty sprinkler, which was repaired.

The moisture from those three events mixed with dormant salmonella bacteria in the plant that Childs said likely came from raw peanuts and peanut dust.

The plant was cleaned thoroughly after the roof leak and sprinkler problem, but the salmonella remained and somehow came in contact with peanut butter before it was packaged, she said.
Yuck! While rennovations are being done at the contaminated plant, peanut butter will be made elsewhere. ConAgra has also hired a microbiologist to overhaul their salmonella testing procedures. The article failed to mention what will happen between Dr. Chase and Dr. Cameron. —MEGHANN MARCO

hey, you got some of your leaky roof water on my peanut butter!
hey! you got your peanut butter on my leaky roof!!

how in the world did that happen? and why were they manufacturing food in a plant that had a leak and still selling it?
and why arent they just admitting that they had a problem and fix it?
Conagra has had other issues with food processing issues in the past, with cleanliness and safety of the food produced by them. Just read, "fast food planet"
...scary stuff!

If I've learned anything from House, M.D., the first dozen possibilities turn out to be wrong or, at best, only a small part of the problem. Unfortunately, the patient's condition must worsen, often to the point of death and resuscitation, before the real problem is determined.

Peanuts are roasted, killing any salmonella. Then they are cooked again as they are ground into a paste and mixed with other ingredients to become peanut butter. Then, at some point between being poured into a jar and the tamper seal being glued in place, ConAgra wants us to believe a little bit of salmonella-bearing mist drifted across the product -- enough to sicken 400 people?

That's simple enough to fix. Patch the roof and rewire the sprinklers.

And it's easier to get the gullible public to swallow, than the idea someone didn't wash his hands after using the restroom, then unknowingly transferred fecal matter to the machines processing the peanut butter.

And ConAgra is more likely to get lawsuits settled when an act of God is involved, than it is when the cause is an act of human stupidity.

I prefer Jif, by the way. Oddly enough, the store where I shop stopped stocking it, too. And all the other brands as well, none of which were manufactured at ConAgra's plant.

This reminds me of the episode with the dirty cop..."Euphoria" I think it was called.

If there's anything I've learned from House, it's that you don't cure your addictions; you feed them.

That and heads of diagnostic medicine devisions like to bang oncologists.
