Then grab the end of the thread with your other hand, and extend it out all the way to the side.  That way you have enough thread to double it up, and still get through the whole sewing process.  The only other thing you should do is slide a pin underneath the loops of thread while stitching the button on, then you remove them when you're about to wind around to make the shank.  This ensures that there is enough room under the button for fabric to rest, this is useful because it is usually a person's tendency to sew a button on too tightly, when in fact that is what makes it pop off.  </p><p>That said, learning how to properly sew on a button was the most useful thing I learned in middle school, no joke.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(1202223, 'SimonGodOfHairdos')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\">        <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-1204716\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=12620\"><img        src=\"http://consumerist.com/assets_c/userpics/userpic-12620-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=12620\">acambras</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2007/04/how-to-sew-a-button-on-the-right-way.html#comment-1204716\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2007-04-03T13:32:33-05:00\">April  3, 2007  1:32 PM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(1204716);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=1204716');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>My dad taught me to sew on buttons.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(1204716, 'acambras')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\">        <div class=\"comment\" id=\"comment-1206603\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=68398\"><img        src=\"/css/images/default.gif\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=68398\">PDQ</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2007/04/how-to-sew-a-button-on-the-right-way.html#comment-1206603\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2007-04-03T17:51:35-05:00\">April  3, 2007  5:51 PM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(1206603);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=1206603');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>I've always found the dry cleaner to be an excellent place to take clothes that are in need of buttons.
