I could be wrong - these laws change all the time - but I believe that you are allowed to claim 'Safe harbor' for the first year.  This means that so long as you pay taxes on the same amount of your taxable income from the prior year, then you are ok.  That helps so long as you are making the same or more as a self-employed person as you were workin' for the man.</p><p>Self-employment can be great, but the price you pay is more complex taxes.  A good CPA/tax advisor will go a long way here.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(925037, 'thrillhouse')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\">        <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-925920\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">        <a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;amp;blog_id=1&amp;amp;id=34627\"><img        src=\"/mt-static/support/assets_c/userpics/userpic-34627-100x100.png\"        width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>    </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&amp;blog_id=1&amp;id=34627\">Sudonum</a>        </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2007/02/how-to-file-taxes-if-youre-self-employed.html#comment-925920\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"2007-02-02T22:17:26-05:00\">February  2, 2007 10:17 PM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(925920);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=925920');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>I have been self-emplyeed since 1998 and this is the first time I've heard anything about \"Safe Harbor\". I had been doing my taxes myself with Turbo Tax, and they really aren't that difficult for something like a consulting business. But as my business has been getting more complecated with  more transactions and income I hired a professional a couple years ago. According to him I hadn't missed much while using the tax software in the previous years, which was kind of nice to know.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(925920, 'Sudonum')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>");
