Low interest rates which drove monthly mortgage payments below rental rates prompted a lot of competition in the mortgage market.  It used to be that job + down payment = car...but now it's becoming job + interest only loan = house.</p><p>In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to find that a great portion of the people \"suckered\" into mortgages that would default on them in 2-3 years knew it going in.  Afterall, if a mortgage is cheaper than rent, why not buy a brand new house to live in until you can't pay for it anymore?  Then just move back into an apartment and all the suckers like you and me get to pay for it in higher future interest rates.</p>        </div>	<div class=\"reply\">	 <div class=\"reply-button\"><a title=\"Reply\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\" onclick=\"mtReplyCommentOnClick(139359, 'crayonshinobi')\">Reply</a></div>		<!-- if it's a top level category ' -->		    </div><!-- end reply- button -->    </div></div>        <!-- Display comment (top level parent) -->    </div>","<div class=\"comments-content\">        <div class=\"comment last\" id=\"comment-139368\">    <div class=\"inner\">	 <div class=\"user-pic\">                <a href=\"\"><img src=\"/css/images/default.gif\"         width=\"60\" height=\"60\" alt=\"user-pic\" /></a>            </div>        <div class=\"comment-header\">            <div class=\"asset-meta\"> <div class=\"vcard author\">mrscolex    </div>				<div class=\"comment-date\"><a href=\"http://consumerist.com/2006/05/american-dream-faces-setbacks-in-peoria.html#comment-139368\"><abbr class=\"published\" title=\"0000-00-00T00:00:00-05:00\">December  0, 0000 12:00 AM</abbr></a></div>				<div class=\"comment-moderate\"><span><a href=\"javascript:moderateComment(139368);\">Moderate</a> |</span><a href='javascript:void(0)' onClick=\"return moderate(this, 'http://consumerist.com/cgi-bin/mt/plugins/Moderate/moderate.cgi?__mode=flag&comment_id=139368');\">Flag for review</a></div>            </div>        </div><!-- end comment header -->        <div class=\"comment-content\">            <p>God fucking damnit.
