I'd been paying them because I was lazy.</p><p>This year I did the TurboTax online route and it was relatively painless and quick. I didn't get the audit guarantees and stuff, although they were available.</p><p>My only gripe was the advertised price for federal returns with \"free\" e-filing was $19.95 (state returns available at an additional cost). Turns out the additional cost was $24.95 + tax (no pun intended).
